Agricultural land use and cover change in the Cerrado/Amazon ecotone: A case study of the upper Teles Pires River basin Acta Amazonica
ZAIATZ,Ana Paula Sousa Rodrigues; ZOLIN,Cornélio Alberto; VENDRUSCULO,Laurimar Goncalves; LOPES,Tarcio Rocha; PAULINO,Janaina.
ABSTRACT The upper Teles Pires River basin is a key hydrological resource for the state of Mato Grosso, but has suffered rapid land use and cover change. The basin includes areas of Cerrado biome, as well as transitional areas between the Amazon and Cerrado vegetation types, with intensive large-scale agriculture widely-spread throughout the region. The objective of this study was to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and cover change from 1986 to 2014 in the upper Teles Pires basin using remote sensing and GIS techniques. TM (Thematic Mapper) and TIRS (Thermal Infrared Sensor) sensor images aboard the Landsat 5 and Landsat 8, respectively, were employed for supervised classification using the “Classification Workflow” in ENVI 5.0. Forest road network planning for biomass exploitation and fire preventions: a least cost path analysis CIGR Journal
Liampas, Sarantis-Angelos; Stamatiou, Christos; Drosos, Vasileios.
The projects related to forest opening up constitute fundamental infrastructure projects for the development of our mountainous and semi-mountainous national economy. In the beginning, timber transportation and connection between forest settlements served as the sole purpose of forest opening up. However, nowadays, the perspective of forest opening up as being an important preventive measure of forest protection, which is a basic pillar of a multipurpose forestry system of the Greek Mediterranean mountains, is gaining ground. The application of modern tools in the opening up is now imperative for choosing the most economical and efficient forestry route. The paper presents a method of opening up roads in the forest, using the least cost path analysis...

Uncertainties Associated with Arithmetic Map Operations in GIS Anais da ABC (AABC)
YAMAMOTO,JORGE K.; KIKUDA,ANTÔNIO T.; RAMPAZZO,GUILHERME J.; LEITE,CLAUDIO B.B..
Abstract Arithmetic map operations are very common procedures used in GIS to combine raster maps resulting in a new and improved raster map. It is essential that this new map be accompanied by an assessment of uncertainty. This paper shows how we can calculate the uncertainty of the resulting map after performing some arithmetic operation. Actually, the propagation of uncertainty depends on a reliable measurement of the local accuracy and local covariance, as well. In this sense, the use of the interpolation variance is proposed because it takes into account both data configuration and data values. Taylor series expansion is used to derive the mean and variance of the function defined by an arithmetic operation. We show exact results for means and...

Aedes aegypti is a very efficient disseminator of human pathogens. This condition is the result of evolutionary adaptations to frequent haematophagy, as well as to the colonization of countless types of habitats associated with environmental and cultural factors that favor the proliferation of this mosquito in urban ecosystems. Studies using sensitive methods of monitoring demonstrate that the methods of surveillance used in the Brazilian program do not show the high degrees of the infestation of cities by this vector. To increase the capacity of the health sector, new tools are needed to the practice of surveillance, which incorporate aspects of the vector, place and human population. We describe here the SMCP-Aedes - Monitoring System and Population...

Spatial Distribution of Euschistus heros (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum Linnaeus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
WEBER,ANDERSON C.; DEGRANDE,PAULO E.; SOUZA,ELLEN P. DE; AZAMBUJA,ROSALIA; FERNANDES,MARCOS G..
Abstract Recently, the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Pentatomidae: Hemiptera), has been detected in cotton in the Brazilian Cerrado. Several reliable surveys have been conducted on the spatial distribution of stink bugs in soybean; however, few studies have examined the behavior of this insect in cotton in Brazil. Thus, this study examined the spatial distribution of E. heros in cotton using aggregation indices based on the variance-to-mean ratio, Morisita index, exponent k, Poisson and negative binomial distributions. Inverse Distance Weighting interpolation maps were also used to represent insect density. The study was conducted in a 1.1 hectare experimental cotton field in which 64 equally-sized plots were sampled on a weekly basis. Our...

A methodological proposal for quantifying environmental compensation through the spatial analysis of vulnerability indicators BABT
Torresan,Fabio Enrique; Lorandi,Reinaldo.
The aim of this work was to propose a methodology for quantifying the environmental compensation through the spatial analysis of vulnerability indicators. A case study was applied for the analysis of sand extraction enterprises, in the region of Descalvado and Analândia, inland of São Paulo State, Brazil. Environmental vulnerability scores were attributed for the indicators related to erosion, hydrological resources and biodiversity loss. This methodological proposal allowed analyzing the local alternatives of certain enterprise with the objective of reducing impacts and at the same time reducing the costs of environmental compensation. The application of the methodology significantly reduced the subjectivity degree usually associated to the most of the...

Topoclimatic Modeling of Thermopluviometric Variables for the Bío Bío and La Araucanía Regions, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Díaz M,Diego; Morales S,Luis; Castellaro G,Giorgio; Neira R,Fernando.
Climatic mapping in the Bío Bío and La Araucanía Regions of Chile is primarily in analog form (paper) and delineation of contours, making it unsuitable for digital handling by geographic information systems (GIS). Therefore, in this study, topoclimatic models were created and spatially represented to explain the spatial and temporal variation of monthly mean temperature and precipitation, as a function of variability and singularity of the physiographic characteristics of the Bío Bío and La Araucanía Regions. The physiographic factors considered were latitude, longitude, altitude, aspect and distance to coastline. To elaborate equations, data from thermopluviometric stations of the study area were compiled and systematized. These stations were standardized...

Spatial distribution of water erosion risk in a watershed with eucalyptus and Atlantic Forest Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Beskow,Samuel; Martins,Sérgio Gualberto.
The process of water erosion occurs in watersheds throughout the world and it is strongly affected by anthropogenic influences. Thus, the knowledge of these processes is extremely necessary for planning of conservation efforts. This study was performed in an experimental forested watershed in order to predict the average potential annual soil loss by water erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then compared with soil loss tolerance. All the USLE factors were generated in a distributed approach employing a GIS tool. The layers were multiplied in the GIS framework in order to predict soil erosion rates. Results showed that the average soil loss was 6.2 Mg ha-1 yr-1. Relative to soil loss...

Soil erosion by water estimated for 99 Uruguayan basins Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Carrasco-Letelier,Leonidas; Beretta-Blanco,Andrés.
Abstract Soil erosion can be accelerated by agricultural intensification, and the soil loss can alter the quality of water bodies. Sustainable agricultural production therefore requires the management of erosion and potential water pollution. In Uruguay, where there is heavy use of soil for agriculture, there is a need to continually develop and update erosion management policies. In this framework, we estimated the erosion in 99 drainage basins by analyzing and managing the information required (K, L, S, C and R-factors) in the universal soil loss equation (USLE) and the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) in a geographical information system (GIS). The studied drainage basins encompass 73% of the area of Uruguay. The results include the...

Estimation of soil erosionability in the stream basin of Pillahuinco Grande, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gaspari,Fernanda J; Rodríguez Vagaría,Alfonso M; Senisterra,Gabriela E.
In a hydrographic watershed, the erosionability (K factor) of the soil evaluation depends on the technical resources, developed applied sciences, and spatial technology available. For the determination of erosionability in the watershed of Pillahuinco Grande s Creek (Argentina) (38°S, 61°15'W), the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used by applying a geographic information system (GIS) for the cartographic evaluation. A database of geological, environmental, and soil associations was developed, which indicated that geomorphologic variability, caused by geology and soil, significantly determines the spatial variation of the K factor values, in a range from 0.02 to 0.69 ((t·m²·h)·(ha·J·cm)-1). A new quantification was determined with the simplified K...
