Aeration effect on Spirulina platensis growth and γ-linolenic acid production BJM
Ronda,Srinivasa Reddy; Bokka,Chandra Sekhar; Ketineni,Chandrika; Rijal,Binod; Allu,Prasada Rao.
The influence of aeration on algal growth and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) production in a bubble column photobioreactor was investigated. Studies were performed in a 20-L reactor at different aeration rates (0.2-2.5 vvm). Static, continuous, and periodic operation of air resulted in 41.9%, 88.4%, and 108% air saturation of dissolved oxygen, for which the corresponding values of GLA were 2.3, 6.5, and 7.5 mg·g-1 dry cell weight, respectively. An increase in the aeration rate from 0.2 to 2.5 vvm enhanced both the specific growth rate and GLA content under periodic sparging in the bicarbonate medium. With a 6-fold increase in the aeration rate, the GLA content of the alga increased by 69.64% (5.6-9.5 mg· g-1 dry cell weight). In addition, the total fatty acid...

Borage (Borago officinalis L.) Response to N, P, K, and S Fertilization in South Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Berti,Marisol T.; Fischer,Susana U.; Wilckens,Rosemarie L.; Hevia,María F.; Johnson,Burton L..
Borage (Borago officinalis L.) is an oilseed with a high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content in its seed. The objective of this study was to determine the response of borage seed yield, oil content, and fatty acid composition to N, P, K, and S fertilizer treatments. Three experiments were conducted in Osorno (40º22’ S, 73º04’ W; 72 m.a.s.l.), Chile. The first experiment was conducted during the 2005-2006 growing season, with four N rates (0, 100, 200, and 300 kg N ha-1), three P rates (0, 60, and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1) and two K rates (0 and 150 kg K2O ha-1). The second experiment was conducted in 2006-2007 and evaluated only the effect of four N rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1) was evaluated because there was no response to P and K in the first experiment....

Enhancement of gamma-linolenic acid production by the fungus Mucor sp LB-54 by growth temperature Rev. Microbiol.
Carvalho,Patrícia de Oliveira; Oliveira,Joaquim Gilberto de; Pastore,Gláucia Maria.
As a relatively prolific producer of GLA, the strain of Mucor sp LB-54 was selected for a study at different growth temperatures in shaker flask culture. The strain used in our experiment was capable to accumulate a relatively high amount of intracellular lipid, 20.73 % of dry cell weight, and GLA content of 15 % of total fatty acids after 5 days of incubation at 28°C. As the growth temperature was decreased from 28 to 12°C the percentage of GLA increased from 15 to 24 % of total fatty acids. In order to optimize the culture conditions for rapid biomass production and lipid production with a high proportion of GLA, the fungus was grown at two temperature combinations associated supplies of carbon source (glucose) in the culture medium. Maximal production...
