The amphipod Echinogammarus stoerensis not extinct in The Netherlands (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Gammaridea) The gammaridean amphipod Echinogammarus stoerensis has never been a common species in the Netherlands, due to the scarcity of suitable habitats. It is typically found under boulders on a gravelly substrate, where a freshwater flow occurs over the littoral zone. As a result of reinforcement of sea dykes, the typical habitat disappeared from The Netherlands. However, E. stoerensis proves to survive in less suited substrates with more silt, and freshwater supply only from rain. |

Amphipods from the Portuguese south and south-western continental shelf were studied with regard to the species inventory, distribution, and ecology. This study allowed the identification of 113 species, belonging to 52 genera; of these species 28 are recorded for the first time along the Portuguese coast. Two species, Ampelisca heterodactyla Schellenberg, 1925, and A. latifrons Schellenberg, 1925, are redescribed. The latter is different from the Ampelisca named latifrons by Ledoyer in 1972 and 1982. The absolute frequencies and abundances of the species, and their distribution in terms of bathymetry and type of substrate are also analysed. The most frequent and abundant species also presented wide ranges of vertical distribution. In addition, these... |

New and lesser-known amphipods of hard substrates in the Delta area of the Netherlands (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Gammaridea) The distribution of 27 new and lesser-known amphipod species of sublittoral hard substrates in the Delta area in the southwest of The Netherlands is described. Data from literature on these species are scarce and/or not readily available. They are supplemented with results from recent investigations of mainly sublittoral hard substrates. Of the 22 marine species only nine occur offshore as well as inshore. The others seem to be restricted to inshore man-made coastline protections. This probably reflects the scarcity of hard substrates further offshore. Four invasive species were recorded in the brackish and freshwater part of the Delta... |

A new amphipod species of the genus Elasmopus Costa, 1853 is described based on material collected from intertidal rocky shore, near the Suape Harbor, coast of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The new species may be recognized by the propodus of gnathopod 2 suboval, slightly tapering distally, palmar margin not defined by a stout seta, spine, or palmar corner, with a subdistal blunt tubercle, posterior margin covered by a dense fringe of plumose setae, and posterior margin of basis of pereopod 7 castelloserrate. This is the ninety-fifth species of the genus Elasmopus described worldwide, the most diverse genus in the family Maeridae Krapp-Schickel, 2008, and the eighth species recorded from Brazilian waters. An identification key to Brazilian species of... |
