Stomatal frequency and gas exchange differs in two Blechnum species (Pteridophyta, Blechnaceae) with contrasting ecological breadth Gayana Botánica
Atala,Cristian; Saldaña,Alfredo; Navarrete,Eduardo.
In Chilean temperate forest, the fern Blechnum chilense has a wide ecological breath, but occur mainly in full sun habitats, while Blechnum mochaenum is restricted only to shady sites. We evaluated if the species with different ecological breath behave similarly in their anatomical and physiological traits. Maximal photosynthetic rate (Amax), Stomatal conductance (g s), evapotranspiration (E), and SLA (specific leaf area) were measured in situ in 20 individuals of each fern species. Additionally, we estimated the stomatal density (SD), stomatal index (SI), and stomatal size in leaves of each sampled individual. B. mochaenum, the shade-tolerant species, had lower SD, SI, A, and E, and higher stomatal size and SLA than B. chilense. Higher stomatal frequency...

Hornke,Nander F; Gadotti,Gizele I; Capilheira,André F; Cavalcante,Jerffeson A; Nadal,Ariele P; Silva,Joseano G.
ABSTRACT Storage is a fundamental step for maintaining seed quality after processing. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the physiological potential of onion seeds stored in different packings and environments. Impermeable, semi-permeable and permeable packings were tested under natural environment conditions (+19ºC), cold and dry chamber (10±2ºC and 33% RH) and cold chamber (16±2ºC and 60% RH), at 0, 90, 180, 270 and 360 days. The design was completely randomized in a 3x3x5 factorial scheme, with three replicates. In order to evaluate emergency in field, a 3x3 factorial arrangement (packing x environment) was adopted. Onion seeds maintained their physiological quality when stored in impermeable packing for 360 days, regardless of the environment. The...

Air-sea CO2 flux variability in frontal regions of the Southern Ocean from CARbon Interface OCean Atmosphere drifters ArchiMer
Boutin, Jacqueline; Merlivat, L.; Henocq, C.; Martin, Nicolas; Sallee, Jean-baptiste.
Nine CARbon Interface OCean Atmosphere (CARIOCA) drifters were deployed in the Southern Ocean (south of the subtropical front, STF) between 2001 and 2006. They recorded 65 months of measurements in all seasons between 57 degrees S and 40 degrees S. Hydrological fronts detected by altimetry indicate that one buoy explored the polar zone (PZ) of the Atlantic Ocean and the western Indian Ocean; the remaining buoys explored the northern and southern parts of the subantarctic zone (SAZ) from the mid-Indian Ocean (73 degrees E) to the eastern Pacific Ocean (112 degrees W). The air-sea CO2 fluxes along the buoy trajectories are primarily driven by the spatial variability of the fugacity of CO2 in seawater, fCO(2): in the SAZ, they vary between -1.1 and -4.2 mol...

Coping with branch excision when measuring leaf net photosynthetic rates in a lowland tropical forest ArchiMer
Verryckt, Lore T.; Van Langenhove, Leandro; Ciais, Philippe; Courtois, Elodie A.; Vicca, Sara; Peñuelas, Josep; Stahl, Clément; Coste, Sabrina; Ellsworth, David S.; Posada, Juan M.; Obersteiner, Michael; Chave, Jérôme; Janssens, Ivan A..
Measuring leaf gas exchange from canopy leaves is fundamental for our understanding of photosynthesis and for a realistic representation of carbon uptake in vegetation models. Since canopy leaves are often difficult to reach, especially in tropical forests with emergent trees up to 60 m at remote places, canopy access techniques such as canopy cranes or towers have facilitated photosynthetic measurements. These structures are expensive and therefore not very common. As an alternative, branches are often cut to enable leaf gas exchange measurements. The effect of branch excision on leaf gas exchange rates should be minimized and quantified to evaluate possible bias. We compared light‐saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates measured on excised and intact...

Experimental Study of Mixed Gas Hydrates from Gas Feed Containing CH4, CO2 and N2: Phase Equilibrium in the Presence of Excess Water and Gas Exchange ArchiMer
Legoix, Ludovic; Ruffine, Livio; Deusner, Christian; Haeckel, Matthias.
This article presents gas hydrate experimental measurements for mixtures containing methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and nitrogen (N 2 ) with the aim to better understand the impact of water (H 2 O) on the phase equilibrium. Some of these phase equilibrium experiments were carried out with a very high water-to-gas ratio that shifts the gas hydrate dissociation points to higher pressures. This is due to the significantly different solubilities of the different guest molecules in liquid H 2 O. A second experiment focused on CH 4 -CO 2 exchange between the hydrate and the vapor phases at moderate pressures. The results show a high retention of CO 2 in the gas hydrate phase with small pressure variations within the first hours. However, for our system...

Photosynthetic performance of contrasting Jatropha curcas genotypes during the flowering and fruiting stages PAB
Domiciano,Gisele Pereira; Kobayashi,Adilson Kenji; Molinari,Hugo Bruno Correa; Laviola,Bruno Galveas; Alves,Alexandre Alonso.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate physiological processes in contrasting physic nut (Jatropha curcas) genotypes during the flowering and fruiting stages. Gas exchange parameters were measured using an infrared gas analyzer, and morphological traits were evaluated during each stage under natural conditions, in a randomized complete block design with five replicates. Differences in yield between J. curcas accessions were not related to photosynthetic performance, but rather to the number of inflorescences and female flowers, which are genetically determined. Moreover, the net CO2 assimilation was equivalent in both genotypes, although they produced different amount of fruit. The genotypes differed consistently in terms of carboxylation...

Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration in elite clones of Theobroma cacao PAB
Silva,Thiago Édson Ribeiro da; Cidade,Luciana Cardoso; Alvim,Fátima Cerqueira; Cascardo,Júlio Cézar de Mattos; Costa,Marcio Gilberto Cardoso.
The objective of this work was to evaluated a procedure for somatic embryogenesis and regeneration of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) elite clones. Petal explants from cacao clones TSH 565 and TSH 1188 were cultured on PCG and SCG-2 media, for calli growth. Somatic embryos were formed on the surface of embryogenic calli after transfer to embryo development (ED) medium. Clone TSH 565 showed a higher embryogenic potential than TSH 1188. The best combination of carbon source for embryo induction in ED medium was genotype-specific. Embryogenic callus formations increased in micropore tape-sealed Petri dishes, irrespective of cacao genotype. Mature somatic embryos were successfully converted into plantlets.

Oliveira Júnior,Luiz Fernando Ganassali de; Santos,Patrícia Lima de Souza; Lima,Roberta Samara Nunes de; Silveira,Maria Priscilla Celestino; Fagundes,Jailson Lara; Carnelossi,Marcelo Augusto Gutierrez; Reis,Fabrício de Oliveira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of CaO-based particle film on the physiological parameters of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) subjected to water restriction. Plants were subjected to two levels of soil moisture and three concentrations of the film, as follows: control, without film + 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc); without film + 50% ETc; 5% CaO + 50% ETc; 10% CaO + 50% ETc; 5% CaO + 100% ETc; and 10% CaO + 100% ETc. Plants treated with 50% ETc remained stable with the application of 10% CaO particle film and showed high photosynthetic assimilation of CO2 (32 μmol m-2 s-1), moderate transpiration (5.6 mmol m-2 s-1), maintenance of chlorophyll content, and greater intrinsic water-use efficiency (IWUE, 226.65 μmol mol-1) and...

Photosynthetic responses of young cashew plants to varying environmental conditions PAB
Souza,Rogéria Pereira de; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Machado,Eduardo Caruso; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Silveira,Joaquim Albenísio Gomes da.
The aim of this study was to characterize gas exchange responses of young cashew plants to varying photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), temperature, vapor-pressure deficit (VPD), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), under controlled conditions. Daily courses of gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were measured under natural conditions. Maximum CO2 assimilation rates, under optimal controlled conditions, were about 13 mmol m-2 s-1 , with light saturation around 1,000 mmol m-2 s-1. Leaf temperatures between 25ºC and 35ºC were optimal for photosynthesis. Stomata showed sensitivity to CO2, and a closing response with increasing Ci. Increasing VPD had a small effect on CO2 assimilation rates, with a small decrease above 2.5 kPa....

Physiological responses of maize and cowpea to intercropping PAB
LIMA FILHO,JOSÉ MOACIR PINHEIRO.
The effect of intercropping on plant water status, gas exchange and productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) cv. Centralmex, and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp)) cv. Pitiuba were evaluated under semi-arid conditions at the Embrapa-Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Trópico Semi-Árido (CPATSA) at Petrolina, PE, Brazil. The treatments were: maize and cowpea as sole crops, at a population of 40,000 plants ha-1, and intercropped at a population of 20,000 plants ha-1. The results obtained in this paper appear to be related to the degree of competition experienced by the components, mainly for water and light. Maize intercropped had higher values of leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis than as sole crop. Intercropped cowpea...

Performance of soybean in hydromorphic and nonhydromorphic soil under irrigated or rainfed conditions PAB
Rocha,Thiago Schmitz Marques da; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Zanon,Alencar Junior; Marcolin,Elio; Petry,Mirta Teresinha; Tagliapietra,Eduardo Lago; Barlest,Darlan; Bexaira,Kelin Pribs.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate soybean cultivation in a hydromorphic or nonhydromorphic soil, with or without supplemental irrigation. Field experiments were carried out with the TECIRGA 6070RR and A 6411RG cultivars in highlands (nonhydromorphic soils) and lowlands (hydromorphic soils), which are traditionally cultivated with irrigated rice. The following parameters were determined in both soybean cultivars: leaf area index, developmental stages, dry matter partition, and leaf gas exchange. Low water stresses, which commonly occur either by deficit or excess in soybean areas cultivated in hydromorphic soils, do not affect the development and partitioning of dry matter; however, they cause reductions in stomatal conductance,...

Environmental effects on photosynthetic capacity of bean genotypes PAB
Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Santos,Mauro Guida dos; Souza,Gustavo Maia; Machado,Eduardo Caruso; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Angelocci,Luiz Roberto; Pimentel,Carlos.
Photosynthetic responses to daily environmental changes were studied in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes 'Carioca', 'Ouro Negro', and Guarumbé. Light response curves of CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance (g s) were also evaluated under controlled (optimum) environmental condition. Under this condition, CO2 assimilation of 'Carioca' was not saturated at 2,000 µmol m-2 s-1, whereas Guarumbé and 'Ouro Negro' exhibited different levels of light saturation. All genotypes showed dynamic photoinhibition and reversible increase in the minimum chlorophyll fluorescence yield under natural condition, as well as lower photosynthetic capacity when compared with optimum environmental condition. Since differences in g s were not observed between natural and...
