Brachiaria brizantha Stapf access evaluation and estimates of genetic parameters for agronomical characters - DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v31i1.6605 Agronomy
Basso, Kelen Cristina; UEM; Resende, Rosangela Maria Simeão; EMBRAPA; Valle, Cacilda Borges do; EMBRAPA; Gonçalves, Manoel Carlos; UFGD; Lempp, Beatriz; UFGD.
Currently, Brachiaria brizantha Stapf is the tropical grass with the largest cultivated area in Brazil, being responsible for a major part of the seed market and for the increase in animal production. There are several superior genotypes available in germplasm banks, collected from the African continent and in need of evaluation. The selection of these genotypes must be based on predicted genotype values of the individuals in function of being perennial plants and of unsexed propagation. The standard procedure for the prediction of genetic values is the individual BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Predictor), using estimates of variance components achieved by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) on an individual model. With the aim of selecting B. brizantha...

Genetic analysis of fertility traits of Holstein dairy cattle in warm and temperate climate Animal Sciences
Rahbar, Rabie; Aminafshar, Mehdi; Abdullahpour, Rohullah; Chamani, Mohammad.
The edited data set for the estimation of heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations of fertility traits contained up to 23,402 records from 10,894 cows calved between 2001 and 2015. Heritability estimates for success in first service (FS), gestation length (GL), number of inseminations (NI), insemination outcome (IO), calving interval (CI), calving birth weight (CBW) and days open (DO) were low and ranged between 0.016 (DO) and 0.123 (GL). Repeatability of fertility traits was estimated to vary from 0.021 (FS) to 0.411 (IO). The genetic correlations between DO × CI, DO × NI and CI × NI were positive and nearly perfect (0.98, 0.88 and 0.88, respectively), while those between DO × IO and CI × IO were negative (-0.98 and -1, respectively). Further,...

Influence of genotype-environment interaction on the classification of Nellore bulls in Southern Brazil Animal Sciences
Bresolin, Tiago; Everling, Dionéia Magda; Rorato, Paulo Roberto Nogara; Braz, Camila Urbano; Breda, Fernanda Cristina.
The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction, as well as its effects on the magnitude of genetic parameters and the classification of Nellore breeding bulls for the trait adjusted weight at 205 days (W205) on Southern Brazil. The components of (co)variance were estimated by Bayesian inference, using a linear-linear animal model in a bi-trait analysis. The proposed model for the analyses considers as random the direct additive genetic and maternal effects and residual effects, and as fixed effects the contemporary groups, sex, season of birth and weighing, and calving age as covariable  (linear and quadratic effects). The a posteriori mean estimates of the direct heritabilities for W205 in the three States varied...

Genetic parameters for performance and carcass traits in a paternal 1 lineage of broiler Anais da ABC (AABC)
CRUZ,VALDECY A.R.; GRUPIONI,NATALIA V.; MENDONÇA,GABRIELA G.; VENTURINI,GUILHERME C.; LEDUR,MONICA C.; PEIXOTO,JANE O.; MUNARI,DANISIO P..
Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate variance components for performance and carcass traits in a paternal broiler line. The (co)variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to the animal model, including the fixed effect of group (sex and hatch) and additive genetic and residual as random effects. Estimated heritability for performance traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.42. The genetic correlations between traits ranged from -0.50 to 0.97. The heritability estimates of feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion from 35 to 41 days of age were of low magnitude. The genetic correlations among them were favorable to genetic selection. These results suggest that moderate genetic gain can be obtained to the...

Ribeiro,Jeferson Corrêa; Silva,Luciano Pinheiro da; Soares,Aline Camporez Crispim; Caetano,Giovani da Costa; Leite,Carla Daniela Suguimoto; Bonafé,Cristina Moreira; Sousa,Mariele Freitas; Torres,Robledo de Almeida.
ABSTRACT: We estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters for egg production in meat-type quails aiming to propose an optimal age for selection through partial record egg production. Data of 3,503 female quails from two strains (namely, UFV1, with 1,811 and UFV2 with 1,692 females) were used. Egg production was assessed by the number of eggs recorded after 42 days of age and each partial period consisted on 35 days of egg production forward. Covariance components were estimated by using single and bivariate animal model, comprising each partial period of egg production and full egg production period (one year of egg laying). Regarding strain UFV1, heritability estimates ranges from 0.03 to 0.16, and for strain UFV2 0.20 to 0.25. The highest genetic...

Phenotypic plasticity of Myzus persicae (Hemíptera: Aphididae) raised on Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala (kale) and Raphanus sativus L. (radish) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Peppe,Fernanda Borja; Lomônaco,Cecília.
The study of variability generated by phenotypic plasticity is crucial for predicting evolutionary patterns in insect-plant systems. Given sufficient variation for plasticity, host race formation can be favored and maintained, even simpatrically. The plasticity of size and performance (assessed by the lifetime fitness index r m) of six clones of Myzus persicae was tested, with replicates allowed to develop on two hosts, kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) and radish (Raphanus sativus). The clones showed significant variability in their plasticity. Reaction norms varied through generations and negative genetic correlation, although not significant, tend to increase with the duration of host use. The lack of plasticity in lifetime fitness among generalist...

Age-age correlation for early selection of rubber tree genotypes in São Paulo State, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Bortoletto,Nelson; Cardinal,Átila Bento Beleti; Gouvêa,Lígia Regina Lima; Costa,Reginaldo Brito da; Moraes,Mário Luiz Teixeira de.
In a field trial involving 68 rubber tree (Hevea spp.) clones calculation of genotypic correlation coefficients revealed significant age-age correlation from age 1 to 6 (immature period) for girth A and for age 7 to 12 (mature period) for girth B and for age 7 to 12 (production of latex) for yield. Rank correlation coefficients between all immature ages of girth (girth A), all ages of mature girth (girth B) and all annual rubber production (yield) were significant for the three traits, with the coefficients decreasing with increasing age. Selection of the sets of best 30, 15, 10 and 5 clones from the available 68 clones at a given age was generally accompanied by a descending order of percentage success. It was suggested: (a) to have the best 30 clones of...
