Genetic progress, adaptability and stability of maize cultivars for value of cultivation and use trials Agronomy
Uate, Joaquim Vicente; Nunvuga, Joel Jorge; Silva, Carlos Pereira da; Guimarães, Lauro Jose Moreira; Pinho, Renzo Garcia Von; Balestre, Marcio.
Maize breeding programs conduct multi-environment trials every year to assess the performance of new cultivars in pre-releasing tests. The data are combined across sites and seasons to perform a joint analysis in order to obtain information that will help breeders to select the best cultivars for different environments. Beyond this, it is essential to understand the different factors that can hamper the selection and genetic progress (i.e., genetic variability, selection intensity and genotype-by-environment interactions). In this study, the genetic progress (GP) was estimated and the adaptability and stability of 81 maize genotypes were evaluated in a series of trials for the value of cultivation and use (VCU) between the 2010/11 and 2014/15 growing...

Effective researches assessing the efficiency of cattle herds in Northern Brazil are incipient. This study aimed to evaluate the direct additive and maternal genetic trends of weights adjusted to 205 (P205), 365 (P365) and 550 (550) days of age in Nellore animals raised on pasture, born between 1997 and 2007, from Northern Brazil. Estimative of (co)variance components used in the prediction of breeding values were obtained by derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood method (REML) using the MTDFREML program. The genetic trends of direct and maternal genetic effects were obtained by the regression of the annual average of predicted breeding values. The heritability estimates for P205, P365 and P550 were 0.33, 0.51 and 0.41, with genetic gain of 0.494,...

OLIVEIRA,SHEILA N. DE; RIBEIRO,RICARDO P.; OLIVEIRA,CARLOS A.L. DE; ALEXANDRE FILHO,LUIZ; OLIVEIRA,ALINE M.S.; LOPERA-BARRERO,NELSON M.; SANTANDER,VICTOR F.A.; SANTANA,RENAN A.C..
ABSTRACT In this paper, the existence of a genotype x environment interaction for the average daily weight in GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in different regions in the state of Paraná (Brazil) was analyzed. The heritability results were high in the uni-characteristic analysis: 0.71, 0.72 and 0.67 for the cities of Palotina (PL), Floriano (FL) and Diamond North (DN), respectively. Genetic correlations estimated in bivariate analyzes were weak with values between 0.12 for PL-FL, 0.06 for PL and 0.23 for DN-FL-DN. The Spearman correlation values were low, which indicated a change in ranking in the selection of animals in different environments in the study. There was heterogeneity in the phenotypic variance among the three regions and...

Genetic parameter estimates in yellow passion fruit based on design I BABT
Gonçalves,Gustavo Menezes; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Bezerra Neto,Francisco Valdevino; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do; Pereira,Telma Nair Santana; Gonçalves,Tiago José Menezes.
The aim of this work was to study the genetic parameters, to obtaine the progenies by crossings among the yellow passion fruits cultivars (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa), following the Design I. The results of the variance analysis demonstrated large variability to be exploited in the population. The trait number of fruit per plant presented the largest additive genetic variation coefficient, demonstrating that larger gains could be obtained for the trait. In terms of genetic action, number of fruits per plant, skin thickness and number of days by flowering have demonstrated to be characterized by the overdominance. Other important traits seem to have presented larger addictive effect than the dominance, as weight, length and width of fruits. The highest...

Response to selection for growth in an interspecific hybrid between Oreochromis mossambicus and O. niloticus in two distinct environments ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Rosario, Westly; Vandeputte, Marc; Muyalde, Nerafe; Morissens, Pierre; Baroiller, Jean-francois; Chevassus, Bernard.
The development of a saline tolerant tilapia strain able to grow fast is of importance in the Philippines, where 240 000 ha of brackish water ponds are available. To this end, founder hybridization between Oreochromis niloticus (with favorable growth traits) and O. mossambicus (with favorable salinity tolerance traits) was performed and followed by backcrossing with O. mossambicus to develop a strain highly tolerant to saline environments. Genetic selection for growth performance was subsequently conducted. The aim of the present study was to estimate growth performance and survival of the hybrid in two rearing environments following four generations of genetic selection. A comparison between the hybrid and an internal reference line was performed in two...

Fifty years of wheat breeding in Southern Brazil: yield improvement and associated changes PAB
Rodrigues,Osmar; Lhamby,Julio César Barreneche; Didonet,Agostinho Dirceu; Marchese,José Abramo.
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of genetic breeding on grain yield, and to identify the physiological traits associated to the increment in yield and their related growth processes, for wheat cultivars grown in Southern Brazil, in the past five decades. Seven wheat cultivars released between 1940 and 1992, were compared for physiological aspects associated with grain yield. Grain yield, biological yield, biomass partitioning, harvest index and grain yield components were also determined. The number of grains per square meter was more affected by plant breeding and was better correlated with grain yield (r = 0.94, p<0.01) than with grain weight (r = -0.39ns). The higher number of grains per square meter was better correlated with the...

Streck,Eduardo Anibele; Magalhães Júnior,Ariano Martins de; Aguiar,Gabriel Almeida; Facchinello,Paulo Henrique Karling; Perin,Lais; Fagundes,Paulo Ricardo Reis; Oliveira,Antônio Costa de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the genetic progress of grain quality attributes of flooded irrigated rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between 1972 and 2016. The genetic estimates followed an approach based on the comparative analysis of 25 cultivars released by Embrapa’s breeding program over this period. The experiment was implemented in four producing regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul: Sul, Campanha, Planície Costeira Interna, and Planície Costeira Externa. The following significant genetic gains were observed: 0.20% per year, for percentage of whole grains after processing; -1.38% per year, for percentage of chalky kernels and white-core grains; -0.77% per year, for total chalky...

The study aimed to estimate parameters, values and genetic gain for growth traits in progenies of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, in the State of Mato Grosso. The progenies test was conducted under a randomized block design with 132 progenies, five replications and three plants in single rows, spaced 3 m x 2 m in Santo Antonio do Leverger, MT. At 24 months of age, progenies were evaluated for the characters: a) diameter at base height (DBH), in centimeters, b) total height, in meters, c) survival. The individual in the narrow sense heritability for the traits studied can be considered medium to high magnitude (0.13 and 0.21) for height and diameter, respectively. The heritability for survival were practically nil, due to low genetic variability among the...
