Genetic control of soybean (Glycine max) yield in the absence and presence of the Asian rust fungus (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) Genet. Mol. Biol.

Soybean is one of the most important crops in Brazil and continuously generates demands for production technologies, such as cultivars resistant to diseases. In recent years, the Asian rust fungus (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. & P. Syd 1914) has caused severe yield losses and the development of resistant cultivars is the best means of control. Understanding the genetic control and estimating parameters associated with soybean (Glycine max) resistance to P. pachyrhizi will provide essential information for cultivar selection. We investigated quantitative genetic control of P. pachyrhizi and estimated parameters associated to soybean yield in the absence and presence of this phytopathogen. Six cultivars and their 15 diallel derived F2 and F3...

Optimising genetic potential for wool production and quality through maternal nutrition AgEcon
Hatcher, Sue; Johnson, P.R..
This paper reviews the development of the wool follicle population with a view to the management of breeding ewes so as to optimise the genetic potential of the progeny for wool production and quality throughout their lifetime. It highlights the importance of the pre-weaning environment (i.e. maternal nutrition through pregnancy and lactation) on the initiation and maturation of the secondary follicle population and identifies the last third of pregnancy as the most critical period. The implications of this for the commercial wool producer are discussed in terms of matching the breeding cycle of the ewes to available pasture and provision of supplementary feed. Finally, it introduces a national project 'Lifetime Wool' funded by Australian Wool Innovation...

Yield and popping expansión components in local popcorn varieties from Southern Brazil Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Bernardo Gongalves,Gábríel Moreno; Mayer,Luana Burg; Souza,Rosenilda de; Ogliari,Juliana Bernardi.
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate grain yield (GY), popping expansion (PE), popping expansion disregarding the weight of unpopped kernels (PEW), and eleven other agronomic and morphological traits of 14 local popcorn varieties (LPV) from far west of the state of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. Two experiments were carried out, in a completely randomized block design with three replications, in different regions of Santa Catarina: one in the municipality of Florianópolis (east coast) and the other in Anchieta (western). Grain yield had the highest positive correlation with prolificacy (PRL) (r = 0.72) and number of grains per row (NGR) (r = 0.71), and a negative correlation with caryopsis circularity index (CCI) (r = -0.67). Variable PEW...
