Alfred Russel Wallace and the Darwinian Species Concept: His Paper on the Swallowtail Butterflies (Papilionidae) of 1865 Gayana
Mallet,James.
Soon after his return from the Malay Archipelago, Alfred Russel Wallace published one of his most signifcant papers. The paper used butterfies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterfies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist defnition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed...

New occurrence of B chromosomes in Partamona helleri (Friese, 1900) (Hymenoptera, Meliponini) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martins,Cinthia Caroline Cardoso; Duarte,Olivia Maria Pereira; Waldschmidt,Ana Maria; Alves,Rogério Marco de Oliveira; Costa,Marco Antônio.
Cytogenetic analyses of the stingless bee Partamona helleri collected in the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil revealed the chromosome numbers n = 18 in the haploid males and 2n = 35 in the diploid females. All karyotypes displayed one large acrocentric B chromosome, which differs from the minute B chromosomes previously described in the populations from southeastern Brazil. Giemsa staining, C-banding and DAPI/CMA3 fluorochrome staining also revealed a remarkable interpopulational divergence regarding both the regular karyotype and the B chromosomes. The B chromosomes found in the samples from Jequié, Bahia, were entirely heterochromatic, while those found in Cravolândia, Bahia, displayed a euchromatic portion at the telomeric end of the long arm. CMA3...

Morphological divergence rate tests for natural selection: uncertainty of parameter estimation and robustness of results Genet. Mol. Biol.
Monteiro,Leandro R.; Gomes-Jr,José L..
In this study, we used a combination of geometric morphometric and evolutionary genetics methods for the inference of possible mechanisms of evolutionary divergence. A sensitivity analysis for the constant-heritability rate test results regarding variation in genetic and demographic parameters was performed, in order to assess the relative influence of uncertainty of parameter estimation on the robustness of test results. As an application, we present a study on body shape variation among populations of the poeciliine fish Poecilia vivipara inhabiting lagoons of the quaternary plains in northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The sensitivity analysis showed that, in general, the most important parameters are heritability, effective population size and...

Geographical variation in sound production in the anemonefish Amphiprion akallopisos ArchiMer
Parmentier, E; Lagardere, Jean-paul; Vandewalle, P; Fine, M.
Because of pelagic-larval dispersal, coral-reef fishes are distributed widely with minimal genetic differentiation between populations. Amphiprion akallopisos, a clownfish that uses sound production to defend its anemone territory, has a wide but disjunct distribution in the Indian Ocean. We compared sounds produced by these fishes from populations in Madagascar and Indonesia, a distance of 6500 km. Differentiation of agonistic calls into distinct types indicates a complexity not previously recorded in fishes' acoustic communication. Moreover, various acoustic parameters, including peak frequency, pulse duration, number of peaks per pulse, differed between the two populations. The geographic comparison is the first to demonstrate 'dialects' in a marine...

The Mental Foramen II: Radiographic Study of the Superior-Inferior Position, Appearance and Accessory Foramina in Iraqi Population International Journal of Morphology
Al-Shayyab,Mohammad H; Alsoleihat,Firas; Dar-Odeh,Najla S; Ryalat,Soukaina; Baqain,Zaid H.
Accurate information regarding the vertical location and appearance of the mental foramen, and the presence of accessory foramina, can have clinical significance, such as reducing complications that may occur during many oral surgical procedures involving the mental area. Geographic variations were reported in these variables. The aim was to evaluate the above-mentioned variables in an Iraqi sample. Five hundred eighteen panoramic radiographs of a random Iraqi sample (257 males, 261 females, average age= 46.5 years) were evaluated with regard to the above-mentioned variables, as well as the symmetry of the foramen regarding these variables. The area below the apices of mandibular premolars, and the continuous type were the most frequent vertical location...

Geographic variation and subspecies of Corvus Enca (Horsfield, 1821) Naturalis
Oortwijn, R.G.M..
In this paper a survey is given of the geographic variation and the subspecies of Corvus enca (Horsfield). For that purpose the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden and the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam were studied and compared with the literature. My examinations resulted in the following division of subspecies: - Corvus enca compilator Richmond: Malaya, Sumatra, Simalur, Nias, Borneo, (Rhio Archipelago). - Corvus enca enca (Horsfield): Java, Bali, Celebes, Sula Islands, (Mentawei Islands). - Corvus enca violaceus Bonaparte: Ceram (and perhaps Buru). - The birds from Mindoro, Samar, Mindanao, Palawan, Balabac and Luzon possibly belong to two or three subspecies. Geographic variation also appears to exist among the...

Geographic variation and taxonomy of crested newts (Triturus cristatus superspecies): morphological and mitochondrial DNA data Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; Wallis, Graham P..
Within the newt genus Triturus, the large-bodied species in the T. cristatus (crested newt) superspecies show an unusual degree of variation in relative trunk length as a result of among-taxon variation in interlimb vertebral count. Here we examine the systematic value of this feature as assessed by both exterior measurement (Wolterstorff Index) and direct radiographic count of rib-bearing vertebrae, with particular reference to a number of confounding factors (sex differences, hybridisation, geographic variation, allometry, preservation effects). Using our mtDNA haplotype data, which are largely concordant with geographic distribution of species, we find that direct count of the rib-bearing vertebrae performs more reliably (14% misclassification) than...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 41. Territorial songs and species-level taxonomy of nightjars of the Caprimulgus macrurus complex, with the description of a Naturalis
Sangster, G.; Rozendaal, F.G..
The Large-tailed Nightjar Caprimulgus macrurus Horsfield, 1821, complex, as currently recognized, comprises 12 taxa which are grouped into four species based on their territorial songs. However, species limits are based on very small samples of a limited number of taxa in the complex. To further document species limits in the complex, we analysed 109 sound recordings representing all recognized taxa. Principal components analysis suggests the existence of six vocally distinct groups within the complex. Discriminant function analysis assigned 98-100% of individuals correctly to their group. Each of these groups differs diagnosably from all other groups by up to eight vocal characters, and each group is recognizable by ear. We propose to treat these six...

A test of Allen's rule in ectotherms: the case of two south American Melanopline Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) with partially overlapping geographic ranges Neotropical Entomology
Bidau,Claudio J.; Martí,Dardo A..
We studied the geographic variation of three morphometric characters in relation to body size in two South American grasshoppers (Acrididae), Dichroplus vittatus Bruner and D. pratensis Bruner to test Allen's rule in these ectotherms. Since both species follow the converse to Bergmann's rule owing to latitudinal and/or altitudinal variation in time available for growth and reproduction, geographic variation in body size proportions of protruding parts may obey to differential allometric growth in different geographic areas. Alternatively, it could reflect true Allenian variation related to thermoregulation. Body proportions were studied by correlation/regression analyses with geographic and climatic variables. In D. pratensis, body proportions increased...

Taxonomic review of Hisonotus Eigenmann & Eigenmann (Siluriformes: Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae) from the laguna dos Patos system, southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho,Tiago Pinto; Reis,Roberto E.
The species of Hisonotus from the laguna dos Patos system are reviewed. Two species with wide distributions are redescribed: Hisonotus laevior and H. nigricauda. Six new species are described from that system: H. notopagos from the rio Camaquã drainage; H. carreiro and H. prata, endemic from the headwaters of rio Taquari drainage; H. vireo, widely distributed in the rio Jacuí basin; and H. brunneus and H. heterogaster restricted to tributaries of the rio Jacuí drainage. Hisonotus leptochilus is here considered a junior synonym of H. laevior. Hisonotus armatus, H. charrua, H. leucofrenatus, and H. taimensis are also present in the region and in total there are twelve species of Hisonotus in the laguna dos Patos system. Their distributions are discussed,...

Snakes of the genus Oxyrhopus (Colubridae: Squamata) in Colombia: taxonomy and geographic variation Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Lynch,John D..
Four species of Oxyrhopus occur in Colombia, one (O. leucomelas) of which is Andean and the other three occur in lowlands. No geographic variation was detected in O. occipitalis but there is marked geographic variation in color pattern and scutellation for the widely distributed O. petola. Recognition of subspecies within O. petola is possible but appears to obscure more than it illuminates. The snake previously reported as O. melanogenys or O. aff. melanogenys is diagnosed as a previously unrecognized species.

Geographic Differences in the Relative Price of Healthy Foods AgEcon
Todd, Jessica E.; Leibtag, Ephraim S.; Penberthy, Corttney.
Although healthy foods can be affordable, if less healthy foods are cheaper, individuals may have an economic incentive to consume a less healthful diet. Using the Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database, we explore whether a select set of healthy foods (whole grains, dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, whole fruit, skim and 1% milk, fruit juice, and bottled water) are more expensive than less healthy alternatives. We find that not all healthy foods are more expensive than less healthy alternatives; skim and 1% milk are less expensive than whole and 2% milk and bottled water is generally less expensive than carbonated nonalcoholic drinks. We also find considerable geographic variation in the relative price of healthy foods. This price variation may...

Intraspecific variation in a physiological thermoregulatory mechanism: the case of the lizard Liolaemus tenuis (Liolaeminae) RChHN
VIDAL,MARCELA A; ORTIZ,JUAN CARLOS; LABRA,ANTONIETA.
The interspecific variation of heating rates in Liolaemus lizards, suggests an adaptive value of this physiological thermoregulatory mechanism, which would allow lizards to cope with the environmental thermal restrictions, imposed to behavioral thermoregulation. This trend has barely been tested at intraspecific level, and here we explore if intraspecific variation in heating rates occurs in Liolaemus tenuis, a relative widely distributed species from central Chile. We test the hypothesis that heating rates are related to the thermal environmental conditions at which populations are exposed, by comparing the heating rates of three populations (from a latitudinal range), which inhabit under different thermal conditions. Additionally, we explore if the...

Morphological and genetic differentiation among Chilean populations of Bufo spinulosus (Anura: Bufonidae) RChHN
Méndez,Marco A.; Soto,Eduardo R.; Correa,Claudio; Veloso,Alberto; Vergara,Eliseo; Sallaberry,Michel; Iturra,Patricia.
Bufo spinulosus has a wide and fragmented range distribution in Chile (18° to 33° S) along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients. Genetic variation was estimated using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers in 10 populations from northern and central Chile. Morphometric and genetic information was analyzed as a function of geographical origin. The correlation between genetic and morphometric differentiation was analyzed by the Mantel test. An increase in body size as a function of latitude was observed. Specimens from El Tatio had the smallest body size and the greatest morphometric divergence. The AMOVA applied to genetic data indicated that 57.85 % of the variance is explained by interregional differences and that 30.12 % of the...

Variação geográfica de caracteres quantitativos em Ogcocephalus vespertilio (Linnaeus) (Teleostei, Lophiiformes, Ogcocephalidae) Zoologia
Cavalcanti,Mauro José; Lopes,Paulo Roberto Duarte.
Patterns of geographic variation in 10 morphometric characters were analyzed in a sample of 91 specimens of the batfish, Ogcocephalus vespertilio (L.), from the NE and SE Brazilian coast, using multivariate statistics and randomization tests. The specimens were ordinated by principal components analysis in two groups corresponding to the regions north and south of the 23ºC isotherm, and size variation was found to account for 70.3%, whereas shape differences accounted for 23.6% of the total variation in morphometric characters. The two groups were different at the 1% significance level by multivariate analysis of variance based on the Wilk's criterion, tested by a randomization procedure. Width of illicial cavity and distance from anus to anal fin were the...

Comparative analysis of the song of the Rufous-collared Sparrow Zonotrichia capensis (Emberizidae) between Campinas and Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Avelino,Márcio F.; Vielliard,Jacques M.E..
The regional dialects or regiolects of the Rufous-collared Sparrow Zonotrichia capensis were compared between Campinas (47º06'W-22º90'S) and Botucatu (48º44'W-22º88'S), São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. Songs of 88 individuals from thirteen localities were recorded. Sonograms showed that two areas presented more homogeneous songs, forming two regiolects. In 11 localities most individuals shared the same song type. At the other two localities, they sang up to 5 different song types. This occurs at the boundaries of the regiolects, and was also where individuals singing more than one song type were found. Similarities between song types were not related to geographic distance between the respective singers. A comparative analysis showed similarities in...

Variation in the diet of the lizard Tropidurus torquatus along its coastal range in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Siqueira,Carla Costa; Kiefer,Mara Cíntia; Sluys,Monique Van; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
The diet composition of lizards of a given species may vary among different populations. The feeding ecology of the tropidurid lizard Tropidurus torquatus was studied in 10 coastal areas in Brazil in order to detect to what extent the diet varies along its geographic range. A non-metric multidimensional scaling technique revealed three groups of localities according to the diet composition: one characterized by a relatively high consumption of Isoptera, one characterized by a relatively high proportion of plant matter, and one in which there was a great importance of Formicidae. We found a weak pattern of latitudinal differences in restingas regarding the general consumption of items by T. torquatus, probably because this is a generalist and opportunistic...
