Integrating Ethno-Ecological and Scientific Knowledge of Termites for Sustainable Termite Management and Human Welfare in Africa Ecology and Society

Despite their well-known role as pests, termites also provide essential ecosystem services. In this paper, we undertook a comprehensive review of studies on human–termite interactions and farmers’ indigenous knowledge across Sub-Saharan Africa in an effort to build coherent principles for termite management. The review revealed that local communities have comprehensive indigenous knowledge of termite ecology and taxonomy, and apply various indigenous control practices. Many communities also have elaborate knowledge of the nutritional and medicinal value of termites and mushrooms associated with termite nests. Children and women also widely consume termite mound soil for nutritional or other benefits encouraged by indigenous belief...

Patterns of mineral lick visitation by lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and lowland paca (Cuniculus paca) in a western amazonian rainforest in Ecuador Mastozool. neotrop.
Link,Andres; Di Fiore,Anthony; Galvis,Nelson; Fleming,Erin.
We studied the temporal patterns of mineral lick use by lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and paca (Cuniculus paca) at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, a lowland rain forest in Amazonian Ecuador. Using 24-hour camera and video traps set at two different mineral licks, we documented the frequency of mineral lick use and the influence of weather and lunar conditions on mineral lick visitations by the two species. Based on 888 nights of mineral lick monitoring, we found that both Tapirus terrestris and Cuniculus paca visit the licks frequently throughout the year. Mineral-lick visitation was not a seasonal behaviour, but rather was influenced heavily by short-term environmental correlates (e.g., dry weather). Although visits by tapir and paca occurred...

Mammal tooth traces in a ferruginous cave in southeastern Brazil and their relevance to cave legal protection Anais da ABC (AABC)
VASCONCELOS,ANDRÉ G.; BITTENCOURT,JONATHAS S.; AULER,AUGUSTO S..
Abstract: We describe the first occurrence of biogenic traces made by mammals within an iron formation cave located in the Serra da Ferrugem Ridge, in Southeastern Brazil. These bioerosions are tooth traces produced in boulders, walls and floor within the cave. The traces occur as sets of two or more grooves, which are highly variable in size. The grooves were compared to tooth traces artificially produced by imprinting the incisors of different mammal species collected in the cave region on soft clay. Among those, the following taxa are potential tracemakers: Akodon sp., Oligoryzomys sp., Necromys lasiurus, Rhipidomys mastacalis, Oecomys gr. concolor, Trinomys moojeni, and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. The age of the traces is unknown; therefore, any...

Observations of parrots at a geophagy site in Bolivia Biota Neotropica
Mee,Allan; Denny,Rebecca; Fairclough,Keith; Pullan,Dave M.; Boyd-Wallis,Will.
Geophagy, or soil ingestion, is known from a wide range of animal taxa but is particularly common among macaws and parrots in the family Psittacidae. Current theory suggests that Neotropical parrots ingest soil to neutralize toxins in food such as seeds and unripe fruit and as a mineral supplement. Here, we document the occurrence of geophagy at a site in lowland forest in Bolivia. We recorded six species of parrot with a maximum of 1,044 birds on any one day. Aratinga weddellii, Pionus menstruus and Ara severa (maxima of 654, 337 and 108 birds respectively) were the most numerous species visiting the site. We recommend that the Valle de la Luna be afforded formal protection by incorporating the site into the nearby Parque Nacional Carrasco.

Geophagy in two parrot species in southern Pantanal, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Severo-Neto,Francisco.
Geophagy is a habit recorded for parrots, which seek earthy or soil-like substances presumably to help them in digestive functions, whether mechanical or chemical ones. Few studies are devoted to this feeding peculiarity in the Pantanal region. Here are reported two events of geophagy, for the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) and the Nanday Parakeet (Aratinga nenday) in the Pantanal subregions of the Miranda-Abobral and Nhecolândia, Mato Grosso do Sul, respectively.
