Nobre, Danubia Aparecida Costa; Silva, Rodrigo Rocha; Guimarães Nasser, Vinicius; Silva, Geraldo Humberto; Aquino, Leonardo Angelo; Macedo, Willian.

EFFECT OF THE PEEL EXTRACTS FROM TWO CAMPOMANESIA (MYRTACEAE) SPECIES ON ALLIUM CEPA L. (AMARYLLIDACEAE) 196
Silva, Bruno Araújo; Castro, Thiago Luis Aguayo de; Viana, Lucilene Finoto; Mascarenhas Santos, Maria do Socorro; Cardoso, Claudia Andrea Lima.
Species from the genus Campomanesia have been studied due to their biological activity and low toxicity. However, studies on the fruit peel of these species are scarce. In this context, the effects of ethanol extract from the fruit peel of Campomanesia sessiliflora (O. Berg) Mattos (CS) and Campomanesia guazumifolia (Cambess) O. Berg (CG) were evaluated concerning the effect on germination and meristem cells of roots of Allium cepa. The CG ethanolic extract showed flavonoid compounds higher than CS ethanolic extract. The CS extract showed no antioxidant activity. CS showed greater antiproliferative activity with reduced root size in A. cepa seeds. The two extracts did not induce mutagenicity and cell death at the studied concentration of 1 mg mL-1....

RESPONSES OF COWPEA CULTIVARS TO SALINE STRESS 196
Romanoski, Vanessa; de Moura Souza Filho, Paulo Roberto; Badaró Pimentel, Adérico Júnior.
The cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] is widely cultivated in Northeast Brazil and stands out for its economic and social importance. Part of the cultivation area is affected by salt stress, which affects the performance of the crop. The effects of salinity can be mitigated with the development of tolerant cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of cowpea cultivars under different levels of saline stress in the germination and emergence phases of the crop. Two trials evaluating the germination and emergence phases were conducted, under controlled conditions, in a factorial scheme with 11 cultivars and five solution of NaCl with concentrations ranging from 0 to 120 mM. There was a marked difference in the response of the...

Preconditioning of Physalis angulata L. to maintain the viability of seeds Acta Amazonica
Souza,Manuela Oliveira de; Souza,Cíntia Luiza Mascarenhas de; Barroso,Natalia dos Santos; Pelacani,Claudinéia Regina.
The important chemical and food properties conferred to P. angulata make it necessary to conduct studies in seed conservation. This study evaluated the effect of priming of P. angulata seed for varying periods and storage conditions. Lots of seeds were stored in a refrigerator and in ambient conditions for up to 24 months. Some of these seeds were primed before or after storage. The results show that there was variation in moisture content. The germination rate and germination rate index remained high in ambient conditions when primed up to 24 months.

DISTINGUISHING Campa guianensis Aubl. FROM Campa procera D.C. (MELIACEAE) BY MORPHOLOGY OF YOUNG SEEDLINGS Acta Amazonica
FISCH,Simey Thury Vieira; FERRAZ,Isolde Dorothea Kossmann; RODRIGUES,William Antonio.
Seedling morphology was studied in Campa guianensisAubl. and Carapa proceraD. C. from germination to 90 days age. In both species germination is hypogeal and cryptocotylar. Both have rare albino seedlings. Though both species have compound leaves when adult, C, proceraputs out an average total of six simple leaves at germination, while leaves of C. guianensisare compound at all stages. This is the best diagnostic character for separation of the two species at the young seedling stage. Not diagnostic, but none the less useful, is the fact, that polyembryonic seeds are often found in C. procera, but not observed in C guianensis.

Anatomical and histochemical comparison of the primary and adventitious roots of Attalea microcarpa (Arecaceae) at the initial growth stage Acta Amazonica
CORRÊA,Marcos Melo; ARAÚJO,Maria Gracimar Pacheco de; MENDONÇA,Maria Sílvia de.
ABSTRACT We describe the anatomical structure of roots originating from the apocole of Attalea microcarpa compared to the primary root, by means of usual methods for optical microscopy. The adventitious roots are differentiated in the apocole associated to vascular bundles, and can remain as a single structure or branch. They have the basic root structure characteristic of Arecoideae palms, without schizogenous spaces, which are observed in the primary root, in addition to few air spaces. Mucilages, starch and proteins were present in both types of roots. Adventitious roots of the apocole are described for the first time in Arecaceae.

Seed dispersal of Solanum thomasiifolium Sendtner (Solanaceae) in the Linhares Forest, Espírito Santo state, Brazil Acta Botanica
Vasconcellos-Neto,João; Albuquerque,Lidiamar Barbosa de; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues.
The aim of this study was to analyse seed dispersal and establishment of Solanum thomasiifolium in an area of "nativo" vegetation in Espirito Santo state on the southeastern Brazilian coast. Ten species of birds, the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and one species of lizard (Tropidurus torquatus) fed on S. thomasiifolium fruits and dispersed viable seeds in their faeces. The proportional contribution of each of these groups to seed dispersal was 77% (birds), 19% (crab-eating fox) and 4% (lizards). Ants also contributed to seed dispersal. More seeds were deposited in vegetation islands than in the surrounding open areas. Germination rates of seeds collected directly from fruit (control), bird droppings, the faeces of crab-eating foxes and lizards were,...

Interspecific variation in the allelopathic potential of the family Myrtaceae Acta Botanica
Imatomi,Maristela; Novaes,Paula; Gualtieri,Sonia Cristina Juliano.
Allelopathy is a type of biotic interference wherein a plant releases bioactive metabolites into an environment, thereby affecting the adjacent biota. Stressful environments stimulate the production of these metabolites. The present study tests the novel weapons hypothesis, which postulates that species belonging to the same genus and from the same environment have similar allelopathic effects. The aim of this study was to assess the allelopathic effects that the aqueous leaf extracts of 15 species belonging to five genera of the Myrtaceae family have on the seed germination and initial seedling growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and onion (Allium cepa L.). Germination rates, average germination times, informational...

Effect of some environmental factors on seed germination of Eryngium caeruleum M. Bieb. populations Acta Botanica
Rezvani,Mohammad; Zaefarian,Faezeh.
ABSTRACT The effects of alternating and constant temperatures and light regimes, osmotic and salt stress and pH were tested on seed germination in four populations of Eryngium caeruleum. Laboratory experiments revealed that the four populations exhibited different responses to alternating temperature and light conditions. Alternating temperature and photoperiod had a greater positive effect on seed germination compared to complete darkness. The optimal constant temperature within 10 ºC to 15 ºC for seed germination of each population was determined in a light/dark photoperiod. Seed germination severely decreased under water stress and was completely inhibited at -0.8 MPa osmotic potential. Saline stress sharply decreased germination percentage. Germination...

Germinability after desiccation, storage and cryopreservation of seeds from endemic Encholirium Mart. ex Schult. & Schult. f. and Dyckia Schult. & Schult. f. species (Bromeliaceae) Acta Botanica
Tarré,Erika; Pires,Bárbara Balzana Mendes; Guimarães,Ana Paula Mançano; Carneiro,Leonardo Alves; Forzza,Rafaela Campostrini; Mansur,Elisabeth.
(Germinability after desiccation, storage and cryopreservation of seeds from endemic Encholirium Mart. ex Schult. & Schult. f. and Dyckia Schult. & Schult. f. species (Bromeliaceae)). Seed storage procedures require previous determination of optimal temperature and light conditions for germination, as well as of tolerance to desiccation and low temperatures. The aim of this paper was to study the effects of desiccation, storage at low temperatures and cryopreservation on the germinability of seeds of six Encholirium and two Dyckia species, which were selected according to vulnerability criteria. Initial germinability of newly harvested seeds varied from 35 to 95%. Seeds presented photoblastic behaviour since light was necessary to induce or...

Salt stress: antioxidant activity as a physiological adaptation of onion cultivars Acta Botanica
Corrêa,Natália Silveira; Bandeira,Juliana de Magalhães; Marini,Patrícia; Borba,Isabel Cristina Gouvea de; Lopes,Nei Fernandes; Moraes,Dario Munt de.
The germination and development of several plant species can be limited when those plants are grown in soils with high salinity, which reduces seedling viability and vigor, as well as activating the antioxidant defense system. The aim of this study was to evaluate germination, initial growth and activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) in seedlings of three onion cultivars (Madrugada, Fepagro 27 and Petroline) exposed to different concentrations of NaCl (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mM). Seedlings were evaluated for viability, vigor and antioxidant enzyme activity. The experimental procedures were completely randomized in 3 × 5 factorial design, with each treatment performed in triplicate, at a significance level...

The effects of an exotic palm on a native palm during the first demographic stages: contributions to ecological management Acta Botanica
Mengardo,Ana Luisa T.; Pivello,Vânia R..
Biological invasions have negative impacts on native biota and consequently on biodiversity. In patches of Atlantic Forest in Brazil, the Australian palm tree Archontophoenix cunninghamiana has become invasive, whereas the endemic palm Euterpe edulis is threatened with extinction. The two species occupy parts of the same functional niche within the forests, which raises a question: Does the invasive species interfere with the recruitment of the native one when the two co-occur? We compared the initial demographic stages of these palms, and assumed that A. cunninghamiana would present better performance (higher rates of germination and seed viability) and would feature allelopathic properties that could influence the recruitment of the native species. We...

Effects of sucrose and irradiance on germination and early gametophyte growth of the endangered tree fern Dicksonia sellowiana Hook (Dicksoniaceae) Acta Botanica
Renner,Gladys Daniela Rogge; Randi,Áurea Maria.
It is an endangered tree fern that grows in mixed umbrophylus forests in the tropics. Sterilized spores were germinated at 25 ± 2ºC under a 16-hour photoperiod, in Dyer and MS medium supplemented with 0 to 5% sucrose. The germination was lower with the addition of sucrose. Dry mass was higher in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer medium with the addition of 3 to 5% of sucrose. The dry mass decreased in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer and MS media without sucrose and in MS medium with the addition of 4 or 5% of sucrose. The effect of different irradiance on the germination and early gametophyte development of D. sellowiana was analyzed in the autumn of 1998 (May until July). Conical flasks containing spores were kept over a period of 49...

Unveiling the germination requirements for Cereus hildmannianus (Cactaceae), a potential new crop from southern and southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Becker,Rafael; Ri,Leandro Dal; Farias-Singer,Rosana; Singer,Rodrigo Bustos.
ABSTRACT Cereus hildmannianus K. Schum is a columnar cactus native to South and Southeast Brazil. The cultivation of this species seems justifiable for several reasons: its fruits are spineless and edible; it is not threatened with extinction; it naturally occurs in Pampa and Atlantic Forest under non-xeric conditions that may be unsuitable for the cultivation of other tropical cacti; and the plants are pollinator-dependent and so should benefit from native pollinators. This study aimed to test seed germination of C. hildmannianus with samples collected at three different localities in southern Brazil, as a necessary step preceding any attempts of management and domestication. Seeds were exposed to temperatures of 20° C, 25° C, 30° C and room temperature....

Seed traits of species from South Brazilian grasslands with contrasting distribution Acta Botanica
Martins,Alexandre Cristante; Marchioretto,Rafaella Migliavacca; Vieira,Ariane Tonetto; Stiehl-Alves,Eudes Maria; Santos,Eliane Kaltchuk dos; Souza-Chies,Tatiana Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT South Brazilian grasslands are among the most species-rich grasslands worldwide yet they have been suffering ongoing degradation due to land-use. Little is known about the reproductive ecology of the native species of these grasslands. Thus, our goal was to characterize seed traits and germination requirements of three native species of the tribe Tigridieae (Iridaceae, Iridoideae) due to its richness in the Pampa biome and the contrasting morphology, cytogenetics, and geographic distributions of its representatives. We tested if closely related species possess similar seed traits and whether species with wider distributions have broader germination requirements. Seed production and mass were estimated, and morphological analyses, germination...

Global warming decreases the morphological traits of germination and environmental suitability of Dipteryx alata (Fabaceae) in Brazilian Cerrado Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Raquel Menestrino; Tessarolo,Geizianne; Soares,Thannya Nascimento; Teixeira,Itamar Rosa; Nabout,João Carlos.
ABSTRACT We experimentally evaluated how different temperatures affect germination of individual seedlings of Dipteryx alata, and estimated the impact of climate change on the species using ecological niche modeling. A total of 240 seeds were randomly distributed among three different temperature treatments (32 ºC, 36 ºC, and 40 ºC), and monitored for 35 days. We measured seven seed traits and estimated the ecological niche of D. alata using a consensus of four methods. The treatment with the highest temperature produced smaller and lighter seedlings. The consensus of ecological niche modeling indicated that are expected to reduce the areas with climates favorable for D. alata in future scenarios. Thus, our two results (experiment and ecological niche...

Phytotoxicity of organic extracts of Turnera ulmifolia L. and Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult. in cucumber seeds Acta Botanica
Silvestre,Daniel Moreto; Kolb,Rosana Marta; Frei,Fernando; Santos,Catarina dos.
We evaluated the phytotoxic effects that the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from leaves and branches of the species Turnera ulmifolia L. and Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult. (Turneraceae), at concentrations of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, have on seed germination and seedling development in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). None of the extracts tested prevented germination, although the ethyl acetate extracts of T. diffusa, at 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, reduced the mean germination speed and time to germination. Hexane extracts of both species reduced the main root length, number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length. In the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts, the number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length varied by species and...

Allelopathic potential of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. (Rutaceae) Acta Botanica
Souza,Flaviana Maluf; Gandolfi,Sergius; Perez,Sonia Cristina Juliano Gualtieri de Andrade; Rodrigues,Ricardo Ribeiro.
We investigated the inhibitory potential of aqueous extracts of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. on lettuce germination and early seedling growth. We compared the effects of four concentrations (100, 75, 50 and 25%) of each extract to water and polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution controls for four replicates of 50 seeds for germination and four replicates of ten seedlings for seedling growth. The inhibitory effects of E. leiocarpa extracts on the percentage of germination and on the germination speed seemed to be more than simply an osmotic effect, except for the percentage of seeds germinated in bark extracts. When compared to water control, both bark and leaf extracts delayed germination, and leaf extracts also affected the percentage of...
