Effects of Aspartame on Maternal-Fetal and Placental Weights, Length of Umbilical Cord and Fetal Liver: A Kariometric Experimental Study International Journal of Morphology
Pórtela,Gabriela Soares; Azoubel,Reinaldo; Batigália,Fernando.
Aspartame is a synthetic sweetener consumed by more than half the adult population in 75 countries. Their metabolites can be toxic, principally to the liver and retina, and there are few studies on the use of aspartame in gestation. Twenty pregnant rats were weighed and allocated randomly (n=5 per group) to receive 14 mg/kg aspartame or water by oral-gastric drip. Treated Tl: aspartame diluted in water at room temperature; Treated T2: aspartame diluted in water heated to 40° C; control Cl: water at room temperature; and control C2: water heated to 40° C. Placentas were weighed, umbilical cords measured and 1000 nuclei of fetal hepatocytes (250 from each group) were analyzed morphometrically utilizing the technique of kariometry, with application of the...

Effects of Albendazole Sulphoxide on Embryonic, Foetal and Placental Parameters in Wistar Rats International Journal of Morphology
Teruel,M; García,V; Catalano,R.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of albendazole sulphoxide (ABZSO), administered to Wistar rats during pregnancy on embryonic, foetal and placental parameters. A colpocytological control was performed daily and detection of spermatozoa in the vaginal smear was considered as day 0 of pregnancy. For the preimplantational study, ABZSO (10 mg/kg) was orally administered at day 2 of pregnancy; at day 4 the embryos were collected. For the postimplantational study, ABZSO (10 mg/kg) was orally administered by gavages at day 2, 6 or 10 of pregnancy (G2, G6 and G10 Groups respectively); the control group was administered the same volume of carboxymethylcellulose vehicle used to prepare the drug suspension. Fetuses were obtained from pregnant rats...

Reproduction de Mustelus mustelus (Linné, 1758) en Mauritanie OceanDocs
Ould Mohamed Fall, K..
The...

Recent advances in sow nutrition R. Bras. Zootec.
Kim,Sung Woo.
Sows produce a larger number of fetuses than before and these fetuses possess genetic potentials to grow faster than before. Recent comparison shows that a porcine fetus is 40% heavier than 40 years ago. Thus the nutritional management of sows has been updated to reflect these genetic changes. Our recent study quantified nutritional needs for sows to support the growth of fetuses and mammary glands during gestation. Amino acid needs for fetal growth and mammary growth during late gestation (d 70 to farrowing) significantly greater than those needs during early gestation (until d 70). Considering these increases, daily requirement of true ileal digestible Lys for a primiparous sows increases from 7 g (until d 70) to 15 g (d 70 to farrowing). Required...

Efficacy of a microbial additive in reducing odor, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide emissions from farrowing-gestation swine operation CIGR Journal
Shafiqur Rahman; Thomas DeSutter; North Dakota State University; Qiang Zhang; University of Manitoba.
To mitigate odor and gas emission concern, different management practices and treatment technologies are available. In this study, the effectiveness of the Digest3+3© microbial additive was evaluated for reducing odor and pollutant gas emission from a swine gestation-farrowing operation in North Dakota.  In this experiment, one of the deep pits in the facility was left untreated (GC) and the other deep pit was treated (GT) with the Digest 3+3 (22.68 kg/month).  Similarly, shallow pits in one of the farrowing units were treated (FT) with the microbial additive, while another unit was untreated (FC as the control).  Air samples were collected from exhaust fans using a vacuum chamber and Tedlar bags.  Odor detection threshold values were determined using a...

Monitoring the nutritional and reproductive state of dairy cows through the presence of urea in milk BABT
Grande,Paula Adriana; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Ribeiro,Hilton; Damasceno,Júlio César; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Barbosa,Orlando Rus; Horst,José Augusto; Santos,Fabio Seiji dos.
The effects of farm, parity (PO) and month of parturition on milk production, percentage of fat and protein, somatic cell count (SCC), and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration were assessed on four specialized dairy farms using 120 cows. Also, the effects of MUN on gestation rate (GR) and artificial insemination rate (AIR) in early lactation were studied. The parameters of production and milk quality were similar among farms and were not influenced by the month of parturition. Farm D presented the highest MUN concentration. Concentration of MUN, percentages of fat and protein and SCC were not influenced by PO. Cows with a value of MUN between 10.1 and 13.0 mg/dL had the highest AIR and GR between days 55 and 70 postpartum and after 70 days in milk. These...

Estudo de parâmetros bioquímicos de éguas gestantes, Puro Sangue Árabe BABT
Unanian,Maria Marina; Silva,Antonio Emidio D. Feliciano; Manzano,Airton.

Low-protein diet does not alter reproductive, biochemical, and hematological parameters in pregnant Wistar rats BJMBR
Barros,M.A.V.; Andrade,E.B.; Barros,R.G.N.; Costa,I.K.M.; Costa,I.C.L.; Vitorino,G.F.A.; Andrade,J.J.C.; Paulino-Silva,K.M.; Nogueira,V.O.; de Brito Alves,J.L.; Costa-Silva,J.H..
The aim of this study was to investigate the reproductive, biochemical, and hematological outcomes of pregnant rats exposed to protein restriction. Wistar rat dams were fed a control normal-protein (NP, 17% protein, n=8) or a low-protein (LP, 8% protein, n=14) diet from the 1st to the 20th day of pregnancy. On the 20th day, the clinical signs of toxicity were evaluated. The pregnant rats were then anesthetized and blood samples were collected for biochemical-hematological analyses, and laparotomy was performed to evaluate reproductive parameters. No sign of toxicity, or differences (P>0.05) in body weight gain and biochemical parameters (urea, creatinine, albumin, globulin, and total protein) between NP and LP pregnant dams were observed. Similarly,...

Effects of pregnancy and protein-energy malnutrition on monooxygenase O-dealkylation activity in rat liver microsomes BJMBR
Kuriyama,S.N.; De-Oliveira,A.C.A.X.; Fidalgo-Neto,A.A.; Paumgartten,F.J.R..
Xenobiotic metabolism is influenced by a variety of physiological and environmental factors including pregnancy and nutritional status of the individual. Pregnancy has generally been reported to cause a depression of hepatic monooxygenase activities. Low-protein diets and protein-energy malnutrition have also been associated with a reduced activity of monooxygenases in nonpregnant animals. We investigated the combined effects of pregnancy and protein-energy malnutrition on liver monooxygenase O-dealkylation activity. On pregnancy day 0 rats were assigned at random to a group fed ad libitum (well-nourished, WN) or to a malnourished group (MN) which received half of the WN food intake (12 g/day). WN and MN rats were killed on days 0 (nonpregnant), 11 or 20...

Effect of strenuous maternal exercise before and during pregnancy on rat progeny renal function BJMBR
Oliveira,A.O.; Fileto,C.; Melis,M.S..
The effects of strenuous exercise before and during pregnancy on the renal function and morphological alterations of the progeny were determined in a study on female Wistar rats. This research was done based on a previous study carried out in our laboratory, which showed morphological alterations in rats submitted to this kind of exercise. As the form is related to the function, the physiological relevance of submitting a pregnant female to a high-intensity exercise training regimen could be explained by the fact that morphological alterations can influence kidney function. The animals were assigned to one of two groups: control animals that did not exercise during pregnancy and trained animals that swam for 120 min 5 days a week for 8 weeks before...

Hemodynamic gestational adaptation in bitches Ciência Rural
Almeida,Vívian Tavares de; Uscategui,Ricardo Andres Ramirez; Silva,Priscila Del Aguila da; Avante,Michele Lopes; Simões,Ana Paula Rodrigues; Vicente,Wilter Ricardo Russiano.
ABSTRACT: Throughout pregnancy, maternal hemodynamic adaptation is needed to ensure proper uterine perfusion and fetal development. When the uteroplacental vascular system is formed, starting with reduced resistance to uterine arterial flow, this results in decreased total vascular resistance, an activation of neuroendocrine vasoactive peptides, an increase in circulating blood and changes in the cardiovascular system morphophysiology to respond to the increasing demands of uterine perfusion. There has been considerable study of hemodynamic adaptation in pregnant women and this assessment has become a diagnostic tool for fatal obstetric disorders. However, in bitches the available information in this regard is limited; therefore a parallel was drawn...
