Effects of waterlogging stress on plant-pathogen interaction between Fusarium poae and wheat/ barley Agronomy
Martinez, Mauro; Arata, Agustín Francisco; Lázaro, Laura; Stenglein, Sebastian Alberto; Dinolfo, María Inés.
Waterlogging stress is one of the abiotic factors which causes damage to crops affecting yield components and grain quality of wheat and barley. On the other hand, Fusarium poae is one of the most common Fusarium species isolated from wheat and barley. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of waterlogging and F. poae on disease parameters, yield components and grain quality of durum and bread wheat and barley. The experiment was carried out using pots under greenhouse conditions. Four treatments were applied: control/control (W0F0), control/F. poae (W0F1), waterlogging/control (W1F0) and waterlogging/F. poae (W1F1). The results showed that incidence, severity and FHB index of F. poae were higher in W0F1 compared to W1F1 suggesting that...

Use of Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy to Evaluate Quality Characteristics in Whole-Wheat Grain Agricultura Técnica
Cozzolino,Daniel; Delucchi,Inés; Kholi,Moham; Vázquez,Daniel.
The aim of this work was to explore the potential of visible (Vis) and near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy to measure quality characteristics in whole grain wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as a tool in breeding programs. A total of 100 samples were analyzed by the reference methods for crude protein (CP), wet gluten (WG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) sedimentation test. Whole grain samples were scanned in a NIR monochromator instrument (400-2500 nm) in reflectance. Partial least squares (PLS) were used to develop calibration equations for the quality characteristics in whole wheat. Calibration models were validated using an independent set of samples (n = 50) randomly selected from the population set. The uncertainty of the PLS models was...

Soluble amino acid profile, mineral nutrient and carbohydrate content of maize kernels harvested from plants submitted to ascorbic acid seed priming Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALCÂNTARA,BERENICE K.; RIZZI,VANESSA; GAZIOLA,SALETE A.; AZEVEDO,RICARDO A..
ABSTRACT Both the scientific community and society have shown interest in improving the content of amino acids, carbohydrates and mineral nutrients in maize because it represents an important staple food in many developing countries. Earlier studies demonstrated that the treatment of seeds using ascorbic acid (AsA-seed priming) enhanced soluble carbohydrates, proteins and soluble amino acids for other species. AsA seed priming in maize showed the potential for reducing abiotic stresses. The effects on grain quality have not been previously demonstrated. This study investigated the impacts of AsA seed priming on maize kernel quality of seeds produced by the plants generated from the primed seeds, based on the amino acid profile and carbohydrate and mineral...

Ultrastructure and biochemical traits of bread and durum wheat grains under heat stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Bagulho,Ana S.; Lidon,Fernando C..
The yield and grain quality (as well as technological traits) of two heat-stressed genotypes of bread (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) having different tolerance to high temperatures after anthesis were investigated. Heat stress, during grain filling, triggered grain shrinkage with a reduced weight and ultrastructural changes in the aleurone layer and in the endosperm cells. Heat stress also decreased the sedimentation index SDS, an effect associated with increased protein content in the grain but with decreased levels of essential amino acids. Although the responses to heat stress were similar among the Triticum genotypes, it is further suggested that during grain filling, high temperatures might affect gluten...

Genetic Progress in Winter Wheat Cultivars released in Chile from 1920 to 2000 Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Matus,Iván; Mellado,Mario; Pinares,Marcos; Madariaga,Ricardo; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the major crop in terms of planted area and presents the largest distribution in the country covering a wide range of climatic regions. This study assesses the changes of various agronomic traits of winter wheat cultivars released in Chile between 1920 and 2000. A total of 117 winter accessions, representing 45 old and 72 modern cultivars were tested in a humid Mediterranean-type climate, with irrigation, in 2003. Old cultivars were those released before 1960 and modern ones were those released after 1960. Principal component (PC) analysis using 10 agronomic traits clearly separate modern from old cultivars of winter wheat. Comparing modern cultivars with old ones, plant height have been reduced by 25.6%, but others traits...

Estimates of genetic parameters of late seed-coat darkening of carioca type dry beans Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Araújo,Lilian Cristina Andrade de; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa.
In order to facilitate commercialization of cultivars of carioca type dry beans, the grains must have the lightest possible cream color and this phenotype must be persistent (late seed-coat darkening). There are reports of genetic variability for this trait. The objectives of this study were to obtain information regarding genetic control of the trait, with emphasis on the estimate of heritability and if it varies according to days after harvest, to verify the effect of locations and/or crop season on seed-coat darkening of the grains and to estimate the genetic and phenotypic correlations of the trait with cooking time, tannin content and grain yield. F2:3 and F2:4 progenies derived from crossing of the cultivar BRSMG Madrepérola (late seed-coat...

Agronomic traits and chemical composition of single hybrids of sweet corn Horticultura Brasileira
Kwiatkowski,Angela; Clemente,Edmar; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
In Brazil, the greengrocery market of sweet corn has been expanding along the country. In contrast, there have been few agri-industries canning sweet corn (Zea mays) because of the lack of cultivars with agronomic characteristics proper to industrial purposes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of seven inbred lines of sweet corn, and the specific combining ability (SCA) of their hybrid combinations based on their agronomic traits, and the chemical composition of the grain. In the growing season 2006/2007, twenty-one single hybrids were evaluated in the Iguatemi Research Station, Maringá County, Northwestern Paraná, in Brazil using a complete randomized block design with four replications. Data were subjected to...
