PUTZKE,JAIR; PEREIRA,ANTONIO B..
ABSTRACT This study presents the description of Phaeosphaeria deschampsii, which was found in plant communities from Half Moon Island, South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica, in February 2014. Many patches of Deschampsia antarctica (Poaceae), the only indigenous Poaceae specie in Antarctic, were found dead, parasitized by a fungi pathogen. Based on the shape of its perithecia, with oblique neck, erumpent in the grass tissues, ascospore form and septation, the specie was identified as new to science.

Partitioning of water soluble carbohydrates in vegetative tissues of Lolium multiflorum Lam. ssp. italicum cv. Lema Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Sandrin,Carla Zuliani; Domingos,Marisa; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cássia Leone.
In temperate grasses, fructans are the major storage polysaccharides, being accumulated mainly in mature leaf sheaths, and also in the roots. The partitioning of carbohydrates within different organs regulates plant growth and development. The aim of the present work was to analyze the partitioning of water soluble carbohydrates in five different parts (elongating leaf blades, expanded leaf blades, upper and lower segments of the stubble, and roots) of plants of L. multiflorum cv. Lema, in order to contribute to an understanding of soluble carbohydrates distribution in these plants. Soluble carbohydrates and total fructose were analyzed in plants cultivated during 4 months in a glasshouse, by colorimetric, TLC and HPAEC-PAD techniques. Results showed that...

White grubs (Cyclocephala flavipennis) damaging perennial winter pastures in the South Region of Brazil Ciência Rural
Duchini,Paulo Gonçalves; Echeverria,Joilson Roda; Américo,Luana Fidelis; Guzatti,Gabriela Cristina; Cherman,Mariana Alejandra; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT: Cyclocephala flavipennis Arrow, 1914 (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae), popularly known as white grub, is an insect widely disseminated in the South Region of Brazil. Despite the frequent occurrence of this white grub in areas cultivated with winter cereals, it is generally not considered a pest, since it feeds on straw and dead plant material. However, in 2015 and 2016, this insect has been identified as the damage-causing agent in the perennial winter pastures in Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Damage was observed in patches and caused reduction in root depth and mass, resulting in loss of vigor, accelerated senescence in aerial parts, and death of tillers in Festuca arundinacea Schreb. and Dactylis glomerata L. plants.

Forage yield, rate of CO 2 assimilation, and quality of temperate annual forage species grown under artificial shading conditions Ciência Rural
Soares,André Brugnara; Bernardon,Angela; Aiolfi,Ricardo Beffart.
ABSTRACT: In this study, it was evaluated the effect of shade on forage yield, rate of CO2 assimilation, and the quality of annual ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) cv. 'BRS Ponteio' and black oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb) cv. 'IAPAR 61', grown under three shading conditions (0%, 25%, and 50% shade) using slatted wooden structures. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications. Slatted structures were efficient in simulating the proposed shading conditions. Shading plants significantly decreased forage yield and CO2 assimilation by both species. Ryegrass cv. 'BRS Ponteio' performed better under shade, with higher forage production under all shading conditions. Rate of CO2 assimilation was reduced by 13 and 22 percentage points...

VEGETATIVE DEVELOPMENT AND GROWING DEGREE-DAYS OF TROPICAL AND WINTER FORAGES REA
Sanches,Arthur C.; Souza,Débora P. de; Jesus,Fernanda L. F. de; Mendonça,Fernando C.; Gomes,Eder P..
ABSTRACT One of the limitations to producing irrigated forages is setting suitable biometric parameters to establish the entrance of animals to grazing areas. Such parameters can be measured or even estimated. Estimates are advantageous for being practical and able to be used for grazing optimization. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation among growing degree-days (GDD), canopy height (CH), leaf area index (LAI), and number of cycle days (NCD) of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) and Bermuda grass (Cynodon spp. Tifton 85) single cropped for one year and overseeded with black oat and ryegrass in the autumn-winter season. The study was carried out from February 2016 to February 2017, and forage crops were sprinkle irrigated. LAI and CH were...

Chromosome number in Brazilian germplasm accessions of Paspalum hydrophilum, P. modestum and P. palustre (Gramineae; Paniceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pozzobon,Marisa T.; Valls,José F.M..
This paper compiles results of chromosome counts of Paspalum hydrophilum, P. modestum and P. palustre. Four Brazilian accessions of P. modestum have shown 2n = 2x = 20 chromosomes, a number already found in one accession from Argentina and in two from Brazil. Three other Brazilian accessions showed tetraploid level (2n = 4x = 40), which was previously unknown in this species. In P. hydrophilum, only one of the accessions analyzed presented tetraploid level, initially established for the species from plants collected in Argentina. Five additional accessions from Brazil showed the diploid number, previously detected in a single Brazilian population. A tetraploid cytotype was found in P. palustre, previously known as a diploid species. In addition to...
