Water quality for rural home supplying in the south of Brazil Biological Sciences
Hollas, Camila Ester; Pokrywiecki, Ticiane Sauer; Prado, Naimara Vieira do; Chini, Angélica; Düsman, Elisângela; Conceição, Priscila Soraia da.
Underground and surface water as a result of human activity are increasingly polluted. Mainly due to improper disposal of waste, discharge of effluents, among other actions that compromise the environment. The water analysis is necessary to determine and evaluate the situation of water supply to the population. This study evaluated the supply situation of three rural communities located in the south of Brazil, where the water is carried out through the abstraction of groundwater. Pastures, fields and remnants of native vegetation characterize the region. The water quality used to supply was what motivated the accomplishment of this work. The wells are unprotected in the middle of the pastures near to black cesspits and crops that use frequently...

Dahri, Shahzad Hussain; Mangrio, Munir Ahmed; Shaikh, Irfan Ahmed; Dahri, Zakir Hussain; Syed, Ain-ul-Abad; Jakhrani, Jazib Hussain; Syed, Taimoor Ali.
This experiment aimed to determine the crop evapotranspiration (ETc), groundwater input in total water used by wheat crop, and to simulate the CROPWAT model to envisage the crop evapotranspiration rate. To estimate on-field ETc and groundwater contribution the combining lysimeter technique was used. The water levels below the soil surface were kept at 1.60, 2.20, and 2.80 m and each water table depth was replicated three times. The experiment was conducted under silt loam (SL) and silty-clay loam (SCL) soil conditions. The climatic parameters and water balance components were recorded accordingly. The on-field ETc was compared with the predicted ETc by CROPWAT model. Under SL soil, the observed ETc was 442, 427, and 401 mm at the water table depth of 1.60,...

Status and sustainability challenges of agricultural water usage in Bangladesh CIGR Journal
Amin, M. G. Mostofa.
Maintaining sustainability in agricultural water usage is a critical concern particularly when the burgeoning population demands more food while adverse climate change impacts water availability. Despite this, the climate-water-crop nexus is still poorly understood in many regions throughout the globe. This study was conducted to quantify current agricultural water use in Bangladesh, one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, and to assess its sustainability challenges. The number of crops, cropping area, yield, water use, long-term daily rainfall, daily river stage and weekly groundwater level data were collected and statistically analyzed. This study revealed that the two most drought-prone northwest divisions export virtual water embedded in...

Assessment of the origin of microbiological contamination of groundwater at a rural watershed in Chile Agrociencia
Valenzuela,Mariela; Mondaca,María A.; Claret,Marcelino; Pérez,Claudio; Lagos,Bernardo; Parra,Oscar.
In a rural watershed in Chile, the scarce groundwater available represents almost the only water source both for agriculture and domestic use. This water has microbiological quality problems, which result in an agricultural and local economic development constraint. Contamination can come from punctual or diffuse sources. Characterizing the microbiological quality of groundwater allows both to identify sources from the point of view of whether they are point or non point -thus facilitating their reduction or elimination- and to determine health hazards likely to affect the population in the area under study. This study aimed to improve the state of knowledge on the microbiological quality of groundwater at a rural watershed. Forty two wells were seasonally...

Recharge contribution to the Guarani Aquifer System estimated from the water balance method in a representative watershed Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wendland,Edson; Gomes,Luis H.; Troeger,Uwe.
The contribution of recharge to regional groundwater flow systems is essential information required to establish sustainable water resources management. The objective of this work was to determine the groundwater outflow in the Ribeirão da Onça Basin using a water balance model of the saturated soil zone. The basin is located in the outcrop region of the Guarani Aquifer System (GAS). The water balance method involved the determination of direct recharge values, groundwater storage variation and base flow. The direct recharge was determined by the water table fluctuation method (WTF). The base flow was calculated by the hydrograph separation method, which was generated by a rain-flow model supported by biweekly streamflow measurements in the control...

Structural control over well productivity in the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Neves,Mirna A.; Morales,Norberto.
The well productivity in crystalline terrains is extremely changeable and depends on external factors, in addition to the intrinsic properties of rocks. In the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil, the main factor that influences well productivity is the existence of open discontinuities permeability in geologic environments that favor groundwater recharge. In that area, Pre-Cambrian shear and fault zones were reactivated throughout geologic time, controlling the morphostructural compartments and the Cenozoic sedimentary deposition. Superposition of productivity data and structural maps showed that more productive wells are concentrated mainly along the regional geologic structures. The structural control over well productivity is also noticeable...

Groundwater resources in Brazil: a review of possible impacts caused by climate change Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hirata,Ricardo; Conicelli,Bruno P..
Groundwater has a strategic role in times of climate change mainly because aquifers can provide water for long periods, even during very long and severe drought. The reduction and/or changes on the precipitation pattern can diminish the recharge mainly in unconfined aquifer, causing available groundwater restriction. The expected impact of long-term climate changes on the Brazilian aquifers for 2050 will lead to a severe reduction in 70% of recharge in the Northeast region aquifers (comparing to 2010 values), varying from 30% to 70% in the North region. Data referring to the South and Southeast regions are more favorable, with an increase in the relative recharge values from 30% to 100%. Another expected impact is the increase in demand and the decrease in...

Tools used to estimate soil quality in coal combustion waste areas Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA JÚNIOR,FLAVIO M.R. DA; VARGAS,VERA M.F..
Soil is a highly complex environmental compartment that has suffered with the contamination of substances of various origins. Among the main activities that affect soil quality are power generation activities that use fossil fuels, such as mineral coal. Environmental protection agencies encourage scientific investigations using tools described in legal devices or standard protocols to evaluate the potential of coal as a pollutant, especially in places that have large reserves of this mineral like the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this study was to characterize the leached extracts of different soils from an area influenced by coal waste, to classify them according to the guideline values for groundwater described in CONAMA's n. 420/2009, and to...

Fluoride characterization by principal component analysis in the hydrochemical facies of Serra Geral Aquifer System in Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Nanni,Arthur; Roisenberg,Ari; Fachel,Jandyra M.G.; Mesquita,Gilberto; Danieli,Cristiano.
Principal component analysis is applied to 309 groundwater chemical data information from wells in the Serra Geral Aquifer System. Correlations among seven hydrochemical parameters are statistically examined. A four-component model is suggested and explains 81% of total variance. Component 1 represents calcium-magnesium bicarbonated groundwaters with long time of residence. Component 2 represents sulfated and chlorinated calcium and sodium groundwaters; Component 3 represents sodium bicarbonated groundwaters; and Component 4 is characterized by sodium sulfated with high fluoride facies. The components' spatial distribution shows high fluoride concentration along analyzed tectonic fault system and aligned on northeast direction in other areas, suggesting...

Groundwater resources in the State of São Paulo (Brazil): the application of indicators Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hirata,Ricardo; Suhogusoff,Alexandra; Fernandes,Amélia.
Indicators, for groundwater resources, have mostly been employed to define the present status and the degradation tendency, regarding both quantity (under- or overexploitation) and quality (natural and anthropic contamination). This work presents the application of indicators in order to draw a picture of the groundwater resources situation in the 22 Water Resource Management Units (WRMU) of the State of São Paulo. The seven Indicators (I1 to I7) applied provide a general overview of groundwater dependence (I1, I2), availability (I3, I4), and quality (I5, I6, I7). Considering public supply (Indicator 1), one observes that 9 WRMUs show high (>50% of the population supplied by groundwater), 6, intermediate (49-25%), and 7, low (<24%) dependence on...

Use of convolution and geotechnical rock properties to analyze free flowing discharge test Anais da ABC (AABC)
WENDLAND,EDSON; GOMES,LUIS HENRIQUE; PORTO,RODRIGO M..
Discharge tests are conducted in order to determine aquifers transmissivity (T) and storage coefficient (S). However the interpretation of test data is not unique and the results may vary depending on adopted hypothesis. In this work, the convolution technique is applied for the reconstruction of observed drawdown curves aiming for the reduction of uncertainty. The interference between a flowing well and an observation well is evaluated in order to determine the hydrogeological parameters of the confined Guarani Aquifer System (Araujo et al. 1999). Discharge test data are analyzed according to the Jacob and Lohman (1952)method. The application of convolution enabled the determination of the most reliable solution. Obtained transmissivity (T = 411.0 m2/d)...

The use of vinasse as an amendment to ex-situ bioremediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with diesel oil BABT
Mariano,Adriano Pinto; Crivelaro,Sérgio Henrique Rezende; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi de; Bonotto,Daniel Marcos.
This work investigated the possibility of using vinasse as an amendment in ex-situ bioremediation processes. Groundwater and soil samples were collected at petrol stations. The soil bioremediation was simulated in Bartha biometer flasks, used to measure the microbial CO2 production, during 48 days, where vinasse was added at a concentration of 33 mL.Kg-1of soil. Biodegradation efficiency was also measured by quantifying the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) by gas chromatography. The groundwater bioremediation was carried out in laboratory experiments simulating aerated (bioreactors) and not aerated (BOD flasks) conditions. In both the cases, the concentration of vinasse was 5 % (v/v) and different physicochemical parameters were evaluated during 20 days....

Detection of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in groundwater for human consumption in Itaquaquecetuba city, S. Paulo-Brazil BJM
Gamba,Rosa de Carvalho; Ciapina,Elisa Mara Prioli; Espíndola,Rodrigo S.; Pacheco,Alberto; Pellizari,Helena.
Cryptosporidium is an emergent pathogen that causes profuse diarrhea in humans. Outbreaks of human cryptosporidiosis have implicated water as a possible source of contamination. In this study the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts was investigated as well as the fecal contamination in groundwater for consumption in Itaquaquecetuba - São Paulo. Therefore, it was possible to notice that the septic tanks were located close to the wells, exposing them to risk of contamination. As a consequence of these results and observations efficient disinfecting practices and groundwater monitoring are recommended.

Gordonia polyisoprenivorans from groundwater contaminated with landfill leachate in a subtropical area: characterization of the isolate and exopolysaccharide production BJM
Fusconi,Roberta; Godinho,Mirna Januária Leal; Hernández,Isara Lourdes Cruz; Bossolan,Nelma Regina Segnini.
A strain of Gordonia sp. (strain Lc), from landfill leachate-contaminated groundwater was characterized by polyphasic taxonomy and studied for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. The cells were Gram-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative and non-motile. The organism grew both aerobically and, in anoxic environment, in the presence of NaNO3. Rods occured singly, in pairs or in a typical coryneform V-shaped. The organism had morphological, physiological and chemical properties consistent with its assignment to the genus Gordonia and mycolic and fatty acid pattern that corresponded to those of G. polyisoprenivorans DSM 44302T. The comparison of the sequence of the first 500 bases of the 16S rDNA of strain Lc gave 100% similarity with the type strain of...

Unconfined Aquifer Permeability near hand-dug Wells in the Coastal and Interior dryland of the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Rupp,David E; Reckmann,Oscar; Vergara,Jorge; Uribe,Hamil; Selker,John S..
In the dryland of the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region in Chile, most farmers rely on wide and shallow hand-dug wells as their primary source of water during the dry summer. Few of these wells have sufficient yield for more than domestic use (human consumption, livestock, and irrigation of a subsistence garden). To more accurately assess available groundwater resources, saturated hydraulic conductivity (K) of aquifers in the eight counties that comprise this region’s dryland was estimated using evacuation and recovery tests in 353 hand-dug wells. K followed a log-normal distribution and ranged over nearly five orders of magnitude. County median K varied by a factor of 5 and a slight increasing K trend in the southward direction. In one northern...

Effect of the Irrigation Canal Network on Surface and Groundwater Interactions in the Lower Valley of the Cachapoal River, Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Arumí,José Luis; Rivera,Diego; Holzapfel,Eduardo; Boochs,Peter; Billib,Max; Fernald,Alexander.
Agricultural production of high value crops in Chile's Central Valley is highly dependent on surface and groundwater resources. They are connected and together form an integrated hydrological system, the individual components of which have to be studied. This research is addressed to answering two questions: 1) to what extent do irrigation and canal seepage contribute to groundwater recharge and 2) what is the influence of the interactions between the Cachapoal River and ground water. The study was carried out from 2003 to 2007 in Peumo Valley (34.3° S, 71.3° W). In winter, the irrigation canal network intercepts and diverts surface runoff, which flows to flat areas and recharges groundwater. In summer, infiltration from the canals recharges the aquifer...

Leaching and residual activity of imidazolinone herbicides in lowland soils Ciência Rural
Refatti,João Paulo; Avila,Luis Antonio de; Noldin,José Alberto; Pacheco,Igor; Pestana,Rodrigo Ribeiro.
ABSTRACT: Herbicides used in the Clearfield® rice (Oryza sativa L.) production system have a potential for leaching. This can result in contamination of underground water resources and cause injury to not tolerant crops that are sown in a succession and/or crop rotation. The objective of this study was to determine the leaching potential and the residual activity of the herbicides used in the Clearfield® rice system. The experiment was conducted over a period of two years and consisted of conducting a field test to be followed by two bioassays with a year of difference between their implementation. Initially an experiment was conducted in lowland area where it was planted the cultivar of rice ‘PUITA INTA CL’. Approximately one and two years thereafter,...

Islam,Jahidul; Hakim,Abdul; Hanafi,Mohamed Musa; Juraimi,Abdul Shukor; Sarkar,Ratna Rani; Hossain,AKM Mosharof; Chowdhury,Indira; Ali,Jafor; Kashem,Abul.
Groundwater quality analyses included pH, EC, cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Fe3+ and As3+), anions (CO32-, HCO3-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43- and Cl-) and TDS of northwestern Bangladesh. The samples contained Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+ as the dominant cations and HCO3- and Cl- were the dominant anions. Ratios of major cations and anions of water samples suggest the predominance of Ca and Mg-containing minerals over Na-containing minerals. According to TDS and SAR values, all samples were classed as 'freshwater' and 'excellent' categories. The SSP of all waters was under 'excellent' and 'good' classes. All samples were within 'soft' class regarding hardness with 'suitable' RSC. Based on As3+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, SO42-, NO3- and Cl- all groundwater samples...
