Age and growth of the Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933 in the Brazilian South-Southeast Region during 1996-2001 Neotropical Ichthyology
Vaz-dos-Santos,André M.; Rossi-Wongtschowski,Carmen Lúcia D. B..
This is the first detailed study on the age and growth of the Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi in Brazilian waters. A total of 3,651 specimens obtained from surveys and sampling landings using trawlers and long-lines in the South-Southeast Region (21ºS to 34ºS) between 1996 and 2001 were analyzed. Readings of sliced and burned otoliths were conducted on 686 individuals (397 females, 129 males and 160 young - sex not identified), identifying opaque and translucent zones. Marginal increment and edge type percentage methods were used for validation, resulting in one ring per year, formed during summer-autumn. Fish with no more than eight rings and six years of age were found, the two first rings after the core being formed during the first year....

Age and growth of the white croaker Micropogonias furnieri (Perciformes: Sciaenidae) in a coastal area of Southeastern Brazilian Bight Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Rosa S.; Costa,Marcus R. da; Araújo,Francisco G..
ABSTRACT Studies on age and growth of fish populations have direct application in fisheries and contribute for policies of conservation. Our aim was update information on the Micropogonias furnieri growth parameters based on sagittae otoliths annulis readings, and we expected that the studied population from Southeast Brazil can reach more longevity than the reported in the available literature. We examined 286 individuals between August-2010 and July-2011 from Ubatuba Bay, SP. The Total Length ranged 200-480 mm. The determined growth parameters were: Males, L∞ =523.4mm, k = 0.05×year-1, t0 = -8.78 year; Females L∞ = 573.5mm, k = 0.06 × year-1, t0 = -7.49 year. The MI and % of edge type evidenced the formation of one ring per year during autumn/winter,...

Age and growth estimation of bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Teleostei: Scombridae) in the southwestern Atlantic Neotropical Ichthyology
Duarte-Neto,Paulo; Higa,Fábio M.; Lessa,Rosangela P..
The purpose of the current study was to supply the first information on age and growth for Thunnus obesus caught in the equatorial south-western Atlantic using dorsal spines, an approach that has been successfully employed for ageing tuna species. The study was conducted using a multi-model inference based on information theory for back-calculated and observed length-at-age data. Uncertainty associated with the parameter estimation was verified and results were compared to other accounts on the species, considering both the statistical and methodological contexts. Samples were collected in Natal city (Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil) from February 1999 to January 2000, of tuna vessels and from surveys, aimed at providing information on the Brazilian...

Ahmad,H; Khalique,A; Naveed,S; Zia,MW; Rasool,Z; Zahid,U; Moeed,A.
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a commercial antioxidant (CAO; Rendox Plus®) treatment in stabilizing the poultry byproduct meal (PBPM) and then the subsequent effect of the treated PBPM on growth of broilers. Five batches A, B, C, D and E of PBPM were treated with CAO at 0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mL/ton, respectively and stored for 42 days. Oxidative stability of PBPM was estimated on day 0 and then weekly using Peroxide Value and Thiobarbituric Acid tests. PBPMs treated with 750 &1000 mL/ton presented the least oxidation and were selected to be included in broiler diets. A total of 240 one-day-old non-sexed Hubbard broilers were randomly divided into two flocks of 120 birds each. Each flock was further divided into four...
