ABSTRACT Colossoma macropomum, known locally as tambaqui, is the native fish most farmed in Brazil, however, technological advances are needed to reach efficient production rates. Modulating growth factors, such as growth hormone, may be associated with improved growth rate and feed efficiency. The use of exogenous hormone for fish rearing is prohibited in Brazil, yet the experimental use of bovine hormone can be useful in research aimed at understanding how to stimulate endogenous growth hormones in fish. Therefore, the present study had the strict objective of understanding the effects of growth hormone on the physiology and zootechnical parameters of C. macropomum under experimental conditions. The animals were intraperitoneally injected every fifteen... |

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with Cymbopogon flexuosus essential oil (EO) on productive performance, metabolic parameters and body and fillet composition of adult silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen. Total length, condition factor, weight gain, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index, visceral fat content and fillet composition were not affected by EO supplementation. Plasma total protein, globulin and triglycerides were reduced by EO supplementation. Supplementation with 1 mL EO kg-1 diet increased carcass yield and protein deposition in the carcass, while reducing gonadosomatic index and fat deposition in the carcass when compared to control group. In addition, 1 mL EO kg-1 diet also improved feed intake... |

The effects of Dangguibuxue Tang (DBT) on growth performance and immunity response in immunosuppressed broiler chicks were investigated in this study. 240 one-d-old broiler chicks (DaHeng S01) were randomly divided into 4 groups, 2.0% DBT-treatment (A), 0.5% DBT-treatment (B), cyclophosphamide-control (C), and control group (D). From 4 d to 7 d of age, chicks in group A, B and C were given cyclophosphamide (CY) at a dosage of 100mg/kg body weight (BW) daily by intraperitoneal injection to induce immunosuppression. Chicks in group D were given an equal volume of physiological saline daily by intraperitoneal injection and considered normal chicks. Groups A and B were supplemented with 2.0% or 0.5% of DBT in the drinking water from 8 d to 42 d of age. Groups... |

ABSTRACT In recent years, a trend has emerged to eliminate soybean meal (SBM) from rabbit diets. It was hypothesized that a dietary mixture composed of rapeseed meal (RSM), white lupine seeds (WLS) and pea seeds (PS) could be a substitute for SBM in diets for growing rabbits without compromising their growth and physiological parameters. To verify this hypothesis, selected parameters describing the growth rate of rabbits, their blood and slaughter parameters and caecum function were analyzed. The experiment was performed on ninety HYPLUS rabbits. Control group (C) animals were fed a diet containing 15% SBM. The diet administered to the first experimental group (E1) contained 7.5% SBM, 5.0% RSM, 4.0% WLS and 3.0% PS. In the diet fed to the second... |

A growth experiment was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein requirement for juvenile cachama, Piaractus brachypomus. Six semi-purified isoenergetic experimental diets using casein and gelatin as protein sources were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36%). Fish initially averaging 15.52±0.33g (mean±SD) were randomly distributed into the tanks (500L) as groups of 20 fish and fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 60 days. The results showed that feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, fish weight gain, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and protein productive value were affected by dietary protein level (P<0.05) . No significant differences were observed in proximal composition of carcass... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the most adequate stocking density for tambatinga during the initial grow-out phase in net pens, considering fish growth, health, and financial aspects. Three stocking densities (400, 500, and 600 fish m-3) were evaluated for 60 days in a completely randomized design (n=4). There were no significant differences among the stocking densities for growth performance parameters, but yield was higher in the density of 600 fish m-3 (3,909.43±397.79kg m-3) compared to 400 fish m-3 (2,656.43±665.45kg m-3). Glucose, hematocrit, and total plasma proteins levels did not differ among treatments. The production was economically feasible for the three stocking densities. However, the density of 600 fish m-3 showed the... |

The hepatic expression and plasma concentrations of IGF-I were investigated in three broiler chicken strains selected for different growth rates (HP-Hubbard-Pettersen, a fast growing strain; NN-Naked-neck, a strain with an intermediate growth rate and a heterozygous genotype, and C-Caipira, a slow growing crossbred strain). The chickens were studied at 1, 21 and 42 days of age and had free access to food throughout the study. Hepatic IGF-I mRNA expression was assessed by dot blot analysis using a randomly labeled chicken IGF-I cDNA as the probe and plasma IGF-I concentrations were assayed by radioimmunoassay. The hepatic levels of IGF-I mRNA increased from 1 to 21 days of age in all strains, with NN chickens showing a higher (p < 0.05) IGF-I expression... |

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). The initial body weights were 8.2, 11.6 and 17.3 g for common dentex, sea bass and sea bream, respectively. In all cases, specific growth rates were not significantly affected by dietary treatment, but they varied among species (sea bass 1.7-1.8 %; sea bream 2.1-2.3 %; common dentex 3.1-3.2 %). When comparisons between... |

Size is the most important and valuable quality trait of cultured pearls produced by the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. In French Polynesia, several breeding programmes have been started that aim to improve this size trait, which is highly related to shell growth rate in both recipient and donor oysters. Shell growth rate dictates the time of grafting, size of implanted nuclei and bio-mineralisation potential of the mantle and pearl sac. We assessed shell growth rate through routine digital shell biometric analysis on 22 hatchery families produced between 2005 and 2008. These included full-sib families and half-sib families derived from polyandry (one dam crossed with two or more sires). Results showed that: 1) a significant family... |

The black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera is of high economic importance in French Polynesia. Arecent decline in pearl value led to the initiation of several genetic breeding programs aiming to improve production traits, including oyster shell growth, which dictates the time of grafting, size of the implanted nuclei, and biomineralization capacities. We assessed shell diameters on hatchery-produced spat to analyze juvenile growth performance of four half-sib families derived from polyandry (one dam crossed with two sires) and polygyny (two dams crossed with one sire) using gametes obtained by thermal shock or gonad scarification. Spat growth was monitored over 3 mo, with shell diameter measured weekly. Results revealed that the spawning method... |

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with essential fatty acids on the kinetics of macrophage accumulation and giant cell formation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The supplementation sources were soybean oil (SO, source of omega 6, n‑6) and linseed oil (LO, source of omega 3, n‑3), in the following proportions: 100% SO; 75% SO + 25% LO; 50% SO + 50% LO; 25% SO + 75% LO; and 100% LO (four replicates per treatment). After a feeding period of three months, growth performance was evaluated, and glass coverslips were implanted into the subcutaneous connective tissue of fish, being removed for examination at 2, 4, 6, and 8 days after implantation. Growth performance did not differ between treatments. Fish... |
