Aging and growth parameter from the Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) from the Cuiabá river, Mato Grosso, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ambrosio,Angela M.; Balbi,Thiago J.; Francisco,Talitha M.; Gomes,Luiz C.; Zuliani,Marina S.; Okada,Edson K..
This study has aims to determine the age and to estimate the growth parameters using scales of the species. Individuals of Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) used in this study were captured in the commercial fishery conducted in the region, along the year 2006. The model selected to express the growth of the species was the von Bertalanffy Sl= Sl∞*[1-exp-k(t-to)]. To determine if scales are suitable for studying the growth of pacu, we analyzed the relation between standard length (Sl) and the radius of the scales through linear regression. The period of annuli formation was determined analyzing the variations in the marginal increment and evaluating the consistency of the readings through the analysis of the coefficient of variations (CVs) for the...

Age and growth parameters of cachara Pseudoplastystoma reticulatum (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) from the Cuiabá River, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Francisco,Talitha M.; Ambrósio,Angela Maria; Balbi,Thiago José; Zuliani,Marina S.; Okada,Edson K.; Gomes,Luiz C..
Age and growth parameters of cachara Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) (males and females) were estimated through the analysis of growth rings in spines of pectoral fins. Fish were collected from January to December 2007, in the area directly influenced by the Aproveitamento Múltiplo de Manso (APM Manso) and in the Cuiabá River (upper parts of the Pantanal). The maximum number of growth rings was seven for males, and eight, for females. The analysis of temporal variations in mean marginal increment showed that rings found in the spines were formed annually, in December. Growth rings were associated to spawning (in the study region from November to March) of the species. The growth curve in length...

The growth of the abalone Haliotis Tuberculata L. in Bay of Brest ArchiMer
Cochard, Jean-claude.
The growth of H. tuberculata L. was studied by analysing the distribution of the growth checks on the shell of 640 individuals. The average lengths of the seven first rings including the first one appear to fit weIl to the Von Bertalanffy model. The value of the growth parameter K = 0,33 is rather similar to those cited in Litterature for the same species but the average attainable size L%= 97,5 seems to be low in this area.

Growth of Araucaria angustifolia in the Embrapa/Epagri forest reserve, Caçador, SC, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Santos, Andreia Taborda dos; Rivera, Hugo; Oliveira, Yeda Maria Malheiros de; Rosot, Maria Augusta Doetzer; Garrastazu, Marilice Cordeiro.
Araucaria Forest is one of most threatened phyto-physiognomies in the Atlantic Forest domain, presenting great ecological-economical importance. Nevertheless, there are still lacks of knowledge concerning growth and dynamic of important species, as Araucaria angustifolia. The objective of this work was to recover  the past growth of Araucaria angustifolia, native from Caçador, SC, Brazil, by measuring growth rings and to estimate the average periodic diametric increment. The growth rings were counted and measured, using a stereoscope microscope, in increment cores of 0.5 cm collected from 32 adult trees. The measurements were done with LINTAB measuring table, with 0.01 mm of precision. The samples sizes were irregular, varying from 4.2 to 20.2 cm long. The...

Dendrochronology of species from Brazilian Araucaria Forest, Candoi, PR PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Santos, Andreia Taborda dos; Oliveira, Yeda Maria Malheiros de; Rosot, Maria Augusta Doetzer.
In the present work the dendrochronological potential of six species of the Araucaria Forest is analyzed. The trunks of 20 trees were collected in Candoi, State of Parana, Brazil, from an area that belongs toELEJOR, Centrais Elétricas do Rio Jordão, for the following species: Araucaria angustifolia, Clethra scabra, Cedrela lilloi, Ocotea porosa, Podocarpus lambertii and Sebastiania commersoniana (3 to 6, from each species). The trunks were sawed, and at breast height a sample was taken from the center of the board, from bark to bark, crossing the pith, for macroscopic analysis. These samples were dried and polished, making possible the recognition and measurement of growth rings The historical climatic data series were provided by SIMEPAR, the State...

Annual tree rings in Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F.Macbr. in a restoration experiment in the Atlantic Forest: potential for dendroecological research Acta Botanica
Brandes,Arno Fritz das Neves; Albuquerque,Rafael Perpetuo; Moraes,Luiz Fernando Duarte de; Barros,Cláudia Franca.
ABSTRACT The tree Piptadenia gonoachantha is widely used in forestry and in forest restoration projects, which require methods for evaluating tree growth. Long-term studies are necessary to determine patterns and detect changes in species growth rhythms. Tree ring analysis provides a precise method for determining age and documenting long-term growth trends in tropical tree species. The present study evaluated the periodicity of tree ring formation and radial growth dynamics of P. gonoachantha from a population of known age in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve. Two radii from six trees were sampled using non-destructive methods. Tree rings were counted and measured to estimate age and to calculate diametric increment. All samples had 16 tree rings,...

Fire records in tree rings of Moquiniastrum polymorphum: potential for reconstructing fire history in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Brandes,Arno Fritz das Neves; Sánchez-Tapia,Andrea; Sansevero,Jerônimo Boelsums Barreto; Albuquerque,Rafael Perpetuo; Barros,Cláudia Franca.
ABSTRACT Fire disturbance affects the composition, structure and dynamics of vegetation. Historical records of fire events exist in some places, but they are generally limited in temporal and spatial extent. Tree-ring research is a useful tool for fire history reconstruction and can contribute important long-term ecological data. We tested the hypotheses that Moquiniastrum polymorphum (Less.) G. Sancho, a widespread species in Brazil that occurs in burnt areas of Atlantic Forest, produces annual growth rings and that its wood can record fire incidence by datable fire scaring. Our results corroborate these hypotheses and indicate that the species has potential for fire history reconstruction.

Age and growth parameters of the dourado Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816) from the river Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil Biological Sciences
Zuliani, Marina Soares; Ambrosio, Angela Maria; Francisco, Talitha Mayumi; Balbi, Thiago José; Okada, Edson Kiyoshi; Gomes, Luiz Carlos.
Age and growth parameters of Salminus brasiliensis (Curvier, 1816) from the Manso Reservoir and from the river Cuiabá are estimated by their fish scales. Sampling was performed between January and December 2006. There was a linear relationship between the standard length of the fish (cm) and the scale radius (mm) (r = 0.93). The coefficients of variation of standard mean lengths calculated for fish of the same age class were low (>19.0%), while temporal variation analysis of mean marginal increment showed that growth ring was annually formed in November, possibly related to the species’s reproductive period between November and January. The maximum number of rings was 12 for both sexes. The growth curve for length expressed by von Bertalanffy model was...

Studies on cambial activity: advances and challenges in the knowledge of growth dynamics of Brazilian woody species Anais da ABC (AABC)
CALLADO,CÁTIA H.; VASCONCELLOS,THAÍS J. DE; COSTA,MONIQUE S.; BARROS,CLAUDIA F.; ROIG,FIDEL A.; TOMAZELLO-FILHO,MÁRIO.
The lack of specific research on the sequence of events that determine plant growth from meristem until wood formation represents a gap in the knowledge of growth dynamics in woody species. In this work, we surveyed published studies concerning cambial activity of Brazilian native species aiming at allowing the comparison of applied methods and obtained results. The annual cambial seasonality was observed in all the investigated species. Nevertheless, we found high heterogeneity in the used methodologies. As a result from this analysis, our opinion points to the need for standardizing sampling protocols and for discussing the suitability of experimental designs. This will help to define with greater precision the factors that determine the radial growth in...

Occurrence of annual growth rings in Rhizophora mangle in a region with low climate seasonality Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,BRUNNA T.; ESTRADA,GUSTAVO C.D.; SOARES,MÁRIO L.G.; CALLADO,CÁTIA H..
ABSTRACT The formation of annual growth rings has been confirmed for several mangrove species in the last decade, among which is the Rhizophora mangle. However, the record of annual rings for this species was made in a region with high hydric seasonality, a widely recognized induction factor of annual rings in tropical species. In this sense, the present study aimed to verify the occurrence of annual growth rings in R. mangle in the mangroves of Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil), a region with low hydric seasonality. For this purpose, the crossdating technique was applied in ten trees collected with known age (seven years). The growth rings are characterized by alternating layers of low vessel density (earlywood) and high vessel density...
