With the purpose of using the cashew and guava dried bagasse for enrichment of cookies, a study of drying process was done. The physico- chemical characterization included the determination of pH, soluble solids, total acidity, protein, lipids, fiber, ash, moisture and total and reducing sugars. Total coli forms, yeasts and molds counting were the microbiological analyses conducted. Enriched cookies were prepared by adding 5, 10 and 15% (of total weight) of dry residues of cashew and guava. Appearance, color, odor, taste and texture were the sensorial attributes evaluated for the enriched and non-enriched cookies. The granulometric analysis defined that more adequate particle to add were between 65 and 100 mesh. The enriched cookies with cashew and guava... |

The guava-psyllid, Triozoida limbata (Enderlein), is a severe pest of guava orchards, reducing fruit production. This communication shows the results of an experiment aimed to test nicotinoid insecticides for controlling the guava-psyllid at a high-density level of infestation. Unsatisfactory control of this pest was achieved with imidacloprid AL 100 g/L, at 5, 10 or 20 mL sprayed once onto the guava stem; with imidacloprid SC 200 g/L, at 0.6 mL in 2 L of water/tree and with thiacloprid SC 480 g/L, at 0.2 mL in 2 L of water/tree, both sprayed twice (15 day interval) on the guava foliage. Possible causes of the failure are discussed in relation to several factors, since previous research showed satisfactory control of the guava-psyllid with these... |

Guava is one of the most complete and balanced fruits in in terms of s nutritional value. Highly perishable, due to its intense metabolism during ripening, its shelf life can reach 3 to 5 days under room temperature. The firmness of the green and mature fruits is due mainly to the pectin polymers. The loss of firmness during the guava ripening is due to hydrolytic enzyme activity, which promotes intense solubilization of the cell wall pectins. Given the above, with the purpose of trying to explain the rapid firmness decrease, the centesimal composition and sugar fraction of the guava fruit were determined during ripening at room temperature. The guavas were picked at the half-mature stage and stored for 8 days at 22 ± 1 ºC and 78 ± 1% relative humidity.... |

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the sanitization effect on the quality of minimally processed guava. Initially, research was carried out with consumers in a supermarket to verify preferences of packaging for guava. Following this, the guava cv. Paluma underwent two sanitization sequences using dehydrated sodium dichloroisocyanurate compound, in 50 ppm concentration, sanitization prior to (S1) and after (S2) being cut; removal of excess water; conditioning in PET packaging and PSPVC and storage at 3 ºC ± 1 ºC. Physicochemical analysis - [pH, total soluble solids (SST), total labeled acidity (ATT), ascorbic acid (AA), total sugars (AT) and reducers (AR)], textural sensorial and microbiological analyses were used to monitor the quality of the... |

Abstract Guava is very delicate and alluring fruit which is being ignored since very long time despite of highly nutritious fruit and rich source of Vitamin C. It contains Vitamin C 2-3 times more than orange. Naturally the guava fruit is enriched with vitamin C and polyphenoles. Guavas fruits after harvesting were dunked in solutions of CaCl2 (1, 2 and 3%) at room temperature for 5 minutes and stored for 24 days in 5% CO2 level at temperature of 10±1°C, while the humidity level of storage chamber were 80%. The stored fruits were analyzed at 6 days of interval for sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose g/100g) total phenolic contents (mgGAE/100g), antioxidant activity (µmolTE/g), and organic acids (citric, tartaric, ascorbic, and malic acids mg/100 g). The... |

Anastrepha striata Schiner is one of the most common species of fruit flies in all its distribution area. It is well reported in literature infesting fruits of several vegetal species, both native and introduced ones. From the economical point of view, it is very important in the tropical and subtropical Americas for attacking species of Myrtaceae family, especially guava. It is considered a pest of great importance by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and by other regulatory agencies (NORRBOM, 2003). It occurs since Mexico, Central America, southern Peru, southern Bolivia, Venezuela, Equator and Brazil, being considered the main guava pest in most of these countries. Some samples were collected in the USA (southern Texas and California),... |
