Occult hepatitis B virus infection in immunocompromised patients BJID
Jardim,Ruth Nogueira Cordeiro Moraes; Gonçales,Neiva Sellan Lopes; Pereira,Josiane Silveira Felix; Fais,Viviane Cristina; Gonçales Junior,Fernando Lopes.
Occult hepatitis B infection is characterized by hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the serum in the absence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). We assessed occult HBV infection prevalence in two groups of immunocompromised patients (maintenance hemodialysis patients and HIV-positive patients) presenting HBsAg-negative and anti-HBc positive serological patterns, co-infected or not by HCV. Thirty-four hemodialysis anti-HIV negative patients, 159 HIV-positive patients and 150 blood donors who were anti-HBc positive (control group) were selected. HBV-DNA was detected by nested-PCR. Occult hepatitis B infection was not observed in the hemodialysis patients group but was found in 5% of the HIV-patients and in 4% of the blood donors. Immunosuppression in HIV...

Souza,Marinilde Teles; Pinho,Tainá Lima Reis de; Santos,Max Diego Cruz; Santos,Alexsandro dos; Monteiro,Vera Lúcia; Fonsêca,Lena Maria Barros; Ferreira,Pedro Antônio Muniz; Ferreira,Adalgisa de Souza Paiva.
INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is an important worldwide public health problem. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health estimates that 15% of the population has had contact with HBV, and that the mean rate of chronic carriers in Northeastern Brazil is around 0.5%. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of HBV markers in pregnant women receiving prenatal care at the public maternity hospitals of São Luís. Methods: Demographical and epidemiological data were collected from 541 pregnant women according to the research protocol. Blood samples were collected, and the anti-HBc test was performed first. If positive, the sample was subsequently tested for HBsAg and anti-HBs. All HBsAg and/or anti-HBc positive samples were...

Response predictors to treatment with pegylated interferon in chronic hepatitis B BJID
Ferreira,Paulo Roberto Abrão; Tenore,Simone de Barros.
The clinical and epidemiological importance of chronic B hepatitis is currently unquestionable as a cause of end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recently, predictors of treatment response of this disease have been studied, both before and during the course of medication. Therapy stopping rules have been proposed, which may be useful in patients presenting poor treatment tolerance. This review discusses the treatment response predictors usefulness, with emphasis on ALT, quantitative HBsAg and HBeAg, quantitative HBV-DNA and HBV genotype
