Determinants of HIV-1 mother-to-child transmission in Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Martínez,Ana M.B.; Hora,Vanusa P. da; Santos,Adriana L. dos; Mendoza-Sassi,Raul; Von Groll,Andréa; Soares,Esmeralda A.J.M.; D'Ávila,Nildo; Silveira,Jussara; Leal,Renata G.; Tanuri,Amilcar; Soares,Marcelo A..
Different human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtypes may have distinct biological, immunological and pathogenic properties. Efficiency of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) may be among those properties, but few and controversial results have been described so far. In this study, 102 children born from HIV-1-infected mothers between 1998 and 2004 in the city of Rio Grande, Brazil were analyzed for potential risk factors associated with MTCT. That geographic region is characterized by a high proportion of subtype C-infected subjects, and it allowed comparison between subtypes B and C and their influence on MTCT. The analysis also included clinical, obstetric and immunological parameters. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to evaluate...

Surveillance programs for detection and characterization of emergent pathogens and antimicrobial resistance: results from the Division of Infectious Diseases, UNIFESP Anais da ABC (AABC)
Colombo,Arnaldo L.; Janini,Mario; Salomão,Reinaldo; Medeiros,Eduardo A. S.; Wey,Sergio B.; Pignatari,Antonio C. C..
Several epidemiological changes have occurred in the pattern of nosocomial and community acquired infectious diseases during the past 25 years. Social and demographic changes possibly related to this phenomenon include a rapid population growth, the increase in urban migration and movement across international borders by tourists and immigrants, alterations in the habitats of animals and arthropods that transmit disease, as well as the raise of patients with impaired host defense abilities. Continuous surveillance programs of emergent pathogens and antimicrobial resistance are warranted for detecting in real time new pathogens, as well as to characterize molecular mechanisms of resistance. In order to become more effective, surveillance programs of...

Paraconsistents artificial neural networks applied to the study of mutational patterns of the F subtype of the viral strains of HIV-1 to antiretroviral therapy Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,PAULO C.C. DOS; LOPES,HELDER F.S.; ALCALDE,ROSANA; GONSALEZ,CLÁUDIO R.; ABE,JAIR M.; LOPEZ,LUIS F..
ABSTRACT The high variability of HIV-1 as well as the lack of efficient repair mechanisms during the stages of viral replication, contribute to the rapid emergence of HIV-1 strains resistant to antiretroviral drugs. The selective pressure exerted by the drug leads to fixation of mutations capable of imparting varying degrees of resistance. The presence of these mutations is one of the most important factors in the failure of therapeutic response to medications. Thus, it is of critical to understand the resistance patterns and mechanisms associated with them, allowing the choice of an appropriate therapeutic scheme, which considers the frequency, and other characteristics of mutations. Utilizing Paraconsistents Artificial Neural Networks, seated in...

Frequency of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies in patients infected by HIV-1 BABT
Leite,Elza Regina Manzolli; Lima,Oswaldo Luiz Luz; Leite,Fábio Renato Manzolli; Costa,Paulo Inácio da.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies in patients infected by HIV-1 and relate it with the different clinical courses of the disease. Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes from 145 individuals. HIV-1 infection was confirmed by ELISA test. The presence of class I anti-HLA alloantibodies and HLA allele's were determined. Clinical evolution was set as fast (<1 year between diagnostic and death), moderate (1-3 years) or slow (>3 years). Class I anti-HLA alloantibodies presence was lower in healthy individuals than in those infected by HIV-1 (4.2% against 32.4%). However, an equal distribution of these alloantibodies was found among the individuals infected, independent on the clinical evolution. Thus,...

Development and validation of a simple and rapid way to generate low volume of plasma to be used in point-of-care HIV virus load technologies BJID
Vasconcellos,Isabelle; Mariani,Diana; Azevedo,Marcelo C.V.M. de; Ferreira Jr.,Orlando C.; Tanuri,Amilcar.
ABSTRACT A new point-of-care HIV viral load, mPIMA HIV-1/2 VL, Abbott, USA, has been recently developed. This point-of-care viral load requires no skilled person to run and uses a small plasma volume (50 µL). However, obtaining 50 µL of plasma can be a challenge in limited resource settings. We validated a simple and easy method to obtain enough amount of plasma to run a point-of-care viral load. The study utilized 149 specimens from patients failing antiretroviral therapy. At least 250 µL of whole blood was collected in a microtube/EDTA from fingerstick (fs-plasma) and immediately centrifuged. Parallel collection of venous blood to obtain plasma (vp-plasma) was used to compare performance in a point-of-care viral load assay and in methodology used in...

Human immunodeficiency virus and the central nervous system BJID
Almeida,Sergio Monteiro de; Letendre,Scott; Ellis,Ron.
The pandemic of HIV/AIDS continues to grow daily. Incident cases among women, intravenous drug users and ethnic minorities comprise the fastest growing segment of the HIV-infected population, and the number of HIV-infected individuals over the age of 50 is growing rapidly. Today, the central nervous system and the immune system are seen as main targets of HIV infection. Significant progress in the knowledge and treatment of AIDS has been obtained in recent years. The neurological manifestations directly related to HIV are acute viral meningitis, chronic meningitis, HIV-associated dementia (HAD), vacuolar myelopathy, and involvement of the peripheral nervous system.

Bilateral peripheral facial palsy secondary to lymphoma in a patient with HIV/AIDS: a case report and literature review BJID
Sasaki,Maria das Graças; Leite,Patrícia G. B.; Leite,Andréa G. B.; Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de.
Neurological complications represent one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV/AIDS. However, peripheral neuropathy comprises only 5% to 20% of the total neurological complications and facial nerve palsy, especially when it is bilateral, is a less common manifestation. Peripheral facial palsy has been considered as a possible neurological complication of the early stage of HIV infection but the number of reported cases in the literature is limited. Histological findings of nervous tissue in peripheral facial palsy at an early stage of HIV infection include a degenerative and not suppurative inflammatory process, but its etiology remains obscure. Peripheral facial palsy in the late stage of HIV infection is...

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and its association with sarcopenia BJID
Pinto Neto,Lauro Ferreira da Silva; Sales,Marina Cerqueira; Scaramussa,Eduarda Sobral; da Paz,Clara Junia Calazans; Morelato,Renato Lirio.
Abstract Presarcopenia and sarcopenia were evaluated in HIV-infected individuals and in healthy elderly controls according to the consensus definitions of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Bioelectrical impedance, a hydraulic hand dynamometer, and gait speed were used to evaluate muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, respectively. Adjusted and unadjusted binary logistic regression predicted the risk of sarcopenia. Predictor contribution was assessed by the Wald test. Significance was established at p ≤ 0.05. The HIV-infected group consisted of 33 patients on treatment (42.4% women; mean age 59 ± 7 years; mean BMI 25 ± 6 kg/m2; viral load undetectable in 30 cases). The HIV-uninfected group consisted of 60...

Non Hodgkin's lymphoma with cutaneous involvement in AIDS patients: report of five cases and review of the literature BJID
Corti,Marcelo; Carolis,Luis De; Solari,Rubén; Villafañe,María F; Schtirbu,Ricardo; Lewi,Daniel; Narbaitz,Marina.
Cutaneous B cell lymphoma (CBCL) is a lymphoproliferative disorder of neoplastic B cell of the skin with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Commonly, the clinical features of CBCL are plaques, nodules, or ulcerative lesions. Skin is one of the common sites for extra-nodal lymphomas in patients with AIDS and B cell type is less common than T cell type. Only recently, the existence of B cell lymphomas presenting clinically in the skin without evidence of extra-cutaneous involvement has been accepted as primary CBCL. Here, we are presenting 5 patients with cutaneous involvement in the setting of HIV/AIDS disease. Two of them were primary cutaneous non-Hodgkin lymphomas. All were CBCL; 3 were immunoblastic, 1 was plasmablastic, and the other was a...

Risk behavior score: a practical approach for assessing risk among men who have sex with men in Brazil BJID
Rocha,Gustavo Machado; Kerr,Lígia Regina Franco Sansigolo; Kendall,Carl; Guimarães,Mark Drew Crosland.
ABSTRACT HIV/AIDS epidemic is not well controlled, and multiple sexual behavior factors help explain high rates of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM). This article proposes to exam the use of a potential risk behavior score for HIV infection, based on the type and number of sexual partners, and condom use, and their associated factors in a sample of MSM in Brazil. A cross sectional RDS (Respondent Driven Sampling) study was performed among 3738 MSM aged 18+ years old from ten Brazilian cities. The risk behavior score was composed by the number of male partners and anal condom use in the last year with steady, casual, and commercial partners. Most participants were 25+ years old (58.1%), non-white (83.1%), and single (84.9%). Final weighted...
