Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate intervention strategies for the reduction of microbiological contamination on the hands of food handlers. The study was conducted from January 2009 to December 2014 at a food and nutrition company in Curitiba, Brazil. Samples from the hands of 877 handlers were collected for microbiological analysis. The intervention strategies applied during each year were: 2009, substitute the use of odorless liquid soap and an antiseptic product by one product; 2010, was increasing the staff of technical supervisors and conducting biannual training; 2011 was to move the lavatories for handwashing, and the use of 70% alcohol gel; 2012, was to increase the frequency of the training of food handlers; 2013, was new weekly... |

The classic description of the hand's superficial palmar arch is based on the anastomosis among the ulnar and radiopalmar arteries, a branch of the radial artery. However, the arch formation is highly variable regarding the size of the arteries that make it up and due to the existence of branches coming from other arteries and adding up as tributary to it. The objective of this paper is to classify these possible varieties, to define the formation of the arch, the reasons for its variable arrangement and the importance of its clinical and surgical applications. 86 formalized hands were dissected at 40%. There is prevalence concerning the size of the ulnar artery, with or without an arch. The anatomic knowledge of the variability in the arch formation... |

The purpose of this study was to examine the plain anteroposterior radiographs of the hands in Turkish subjects in order to determine the prevalence of sesamoid bones and their distribution. A total of 923 hand radiographs from 459 men and 464 women with a mean age of 43.76±14.8 years (range, 18-85 years) were examined. Two sesamoid bones (ulnar and radial) were always present at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb (100%). One sesamoid bone in the thumb interphalangeal (IP) joint was observed in 21.3% of the cases. The prevalence of sesamoid bone of the index and little MCP joint were 36.6% and 53.2% respectively. Sesamoid bones palmar to the MCP joints of the middle finger and ring finger were rare; the incidence for these locations being... |

The morphology and morphometry of the distal articular surface of the lunate exhibits inter-population variations. They are of clinical importance to hand surgeons due to their influence on the occurrence of proximal pole arthrosis which is a cause of ulnar-side wrist pain. The objective of the study was to determine the morphology and morphometry of the distal articular surface of the lunate bone in an adult Kenyan population. A descriptive cross-sectional study at the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi. Fifty-six human hands obtained for routine dissection were used. The morphology of the distal articular surface of the lunate was classified as either Type I or Type II depending on the absence or presence of a medial facet for... |

The Abductor digiti minimi muscle, and the other hypotenar muscles, frequently presents anatomical variations. According to literature, this muscle can be composed by one, two or three muscular beams, as well as it can present accessory muscular beams. In dissecations of 40 formolized hands, we objectified to study the morphology and variations of the Abductor digiti minimi muscle. The muscle presented two muscular beams in 82,5 %, three beams in 15% and only 1 beam in 2,5 % of the cases. In none of cases accessory muscular beams were observed. When compared with literature, are observed statistics difference in some studied aspects. The results found in the research allow to affirm that the Abductor digiti minimi muscle is formed by two muscular beams in... |
