ABSTRACT The immature leaves of the buriti palm (Mauritia flexuosa) are widely harvested in the municipality of Barreirinhas, Maranhão, for the production of handicrafts, which are sold to locals and tourists. The increasing demand for these artisanal goods is stimulating the emergence of an informal market for immature buriti leaves, leading to an intensification of their extraction and resulting in negative effects on local buriti palm populations and the ecosystem. Thus, the objective of the present study was to assess the environmental value of the buriti palm tree based on the maximum willingness to pay (WTP) for its conservation, using the contingent valuation method. Among the respondents, 99.74% reported that the palm species should be protected... |

Agricultural biomass supply chain consisting of multiple harvesting, storage, pre-processing, and transport operations. This network operates in space and time coordinates and produces empirical data used for many purposes, including wood-flow planning, harvesting cost calculation and work rate setting. The aim of this study was to explore and propose the use of a multivariate approach, namely, the Partial Least Squares (PLS) multivariate regression approach and compare its performance with the commonly used Ordinary Linear Regression (OLS). In particular, the study aimed at comparing the main statistical significance of indicators attributed to models calculated with OLS and PLS regressions from the same original datasets, for the purpose of... |

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system that provides geo-location and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth. Machine operation track, turning pattern, effective time of field operation, field capacity, field efficiency, machine idle time, etc. can be evaluated precisely by using geo-referenced data recorded by a GPS receiver during field operations. Highly precise GPS receivers are expensive and unaffordable for farmers and farm operators in Bangladesh. Keeping this in mind the scope of an affordable and easy to handle GPS receiver was explored in the study. A GPS receiver was used to record the data generated by combine harvester and mini combine harvester during harvesting. Data were recorded... |

Abstract Our understanding of the impacts of ongoing global warming on terrestrial species has increased significantly during the last several years, but how climatic change has affected, and will affect, the distribution of earthworms remains largely unknown. We used climate niche modeling to model the current distribution of the giant earthworm Rhinodrilus alatus - an endemic species of the Cerrado Domain in Brazil, which is traditionally harvested and commercialized for fishing bait. R. alatus is sensitive to environmental changes because climate, in synergy with soil attributes, determine its annual reproductive cycle and distribution. The paleoclimatic reconstructions predict important geographical shifts from LGM (~21,000 yBp) to the present... |

Monitoring the distribution and abundance of hunted wildlife is critical to achieving sustainable resource use, yet adequate data are sparse for most tropical regions. Conventional methods for monitoring hunted forest-vertebrate species require intensive in situ survey effort, which severely constrains spatial and temporal replication. Integrating local ecological knowledge (LEK) into monitoring and management is appealing because it can be cost-effective, enhance community participation, and provide novel insights into sustainable resource use. We develop a technique to monitor population depletion of hunted forest wildlife in the Brazilian Amazon, based on the local ecological knowledge of rural hunters. We performed rapid interview surveys to estimate... |
