Resistance of cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) to venom from the scorpion Centruroides limpidus limpidus J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Contreras-Ortiz,José María Eloy; Vázquez-Chagoyán,Juan Carlos; Martínez-Castañeda,José Simón; Estrada-Franco,José Guillermo; Aparicio-Burgos,José Esteban; Acosta-Dibarrat,Jorge; Barbabosa-Pliego,Alberto.
Background : The venom of Centruroides limpidus limpidus (Cll) is a mixture of pharmacologically active principles. The most important of these are toxic proteins that interact both selectively and specifically with different cellular targets such as ion channels. Recently, anticancer properties of the venom from other scorpion species have been described. Studies in vitro have shown that scorpion venom induces cell death, inhibits proliferation and triggers the apoptotic pathway in different cancer cell lines. Herein, after treating human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cells with Cll crude venom, their cytotoxic activity and apoptosis induction were assessed. Results : Cll crude venom induced cell death in normal macrophages in a dose-dependent manner....

Identification of a fat-soluble fraction of Sparganium stoloniferum that inhibits cervical cancer HeLa cells BABT
Zhang,Junwu; Wei,Yahui.
ABSTRACT Context The rizoma of Sparganium stoloniferum has been used as a traditional Chinese medicinal herb for thousands of years. Sparganium stoloniferum is a stasis-breaking drug to treat a wide range of diseases including cancer, however, its activity of extract on cervical cancer HeLa cells and the mechanisms remains unknown. Objective This study aimed to screen Sparganium stoloniferum extract for its inhibitory effects on cervical cancer HeLa cells. Materials and methods Sparganium stoloniferum was extracted with 95% ethanol under reflux, and the extracts were preliminary separated by silica gel column chromatography. MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to determine the inhibitory effects of three fractions on HeLa cells. In addition, GC-MS was...

Evaluation of hela cell lineage response to β radiation from Holmium-166 embedded in ceramic seeds BABT
Valente,Eduardo Sarmento; Cuperschmid,Ethel Mizrahy; Campos,Tarcisio Passos Ribeiro de.
This work studied the effects of β radiation of Ho-166 embedded in ceramic seeds on HeLa cells. Methodology consisted in the production of ceramic seeds with holmium-165 by sol-gel route. Chemical and physical characterizations of the seeds were performed. Subsequently, nuclear characterization was performed by gamma spectrometry. Experimental and theoretical activities were defined and initial dose rate were evaluated by MIRD (Medical Internal Radiation Dose Committee) methodology. The seeds were placed in confluent culture flasks and remained for six radionuclide half-lives. Biological results were represented by a clean 6 mm diameter area around the seed where the tumour cells were killed. The initial dose rate was 15.5 Gy. h-1. The maximum absorbed...

Presence of autoantibodies against HeLa small nuclear ribonucleoproteins in chagasic and non-chagasic cardiac patients BJMBR
Bosetto,M.C.; Peixoto,M.S.; Castro,L.I.R. de; Cicarelli,R.M.B..
We detected anti-human small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) autoantibodies in chagasic patients by different immunological methods using HeLa snRNPs. ELISA with Trypanosoma cruzi total lysate antigen or HeLa human U small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (UsnRNPs) followed by incubation with sera from chronic chagasic and non-chagasic cardiac patients was used to screen and compare serum reactivity. Western blot analysis using a T. cruzi total cell extract was also performed in order to select some sera for Western blot and immunoprecipitation assays with HeLa nuclear extract. ELISA showed that 73 and 95% of chronic chagasic sera reacted with HeLa UsnRNPs and T. cruzi antigens, respectively. The Western blot assay demonstrated that non-chagasic cardiac sera...
