Noninvasive method for electrocardiogram recording in conscious rats: feasibility for heart rate variability analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira-Junior,Pedro P.; Marocolo,Moacir; Rodrigues,Fabricio P.; Medei,Emiliano; Nascimento,José H.M..
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis consists in a well-established tool for the assessment of cardiac autonomic control, both in humans and in animal models. Conventional methods for HRV analysis in rats rely on conscious state electrocardiogram (ECG) recording based on prior invasive surgical procedures for electrodes/transmitters implants. The aim of the present study was to test a noninvasive and inexpensive method for ECG recording in conscious rats, assessing its feasibility for HRV analysis. A custom-made elastic cotton jacket was developed to fit the rat's mean thoracic circumference, with two pieces of platinum electrodes attached on its inner surface, allowing ECG to be recorded noninvasively in conscious, restrained rats (n=6). Time- and...

Longitudinal study of the sympathovagal balance in women submitted to bariatric surgery Anais da ABC (AABC)
LUCAS,CRISTINA M.S.; ZANIQUELI,DIVANEI; ALVIM,RAFAEL O.; MIGUEL,GUSTAVO P.S.; MILL,JOSÉ GERALDO.
Abstract Studies have shown improvement of the cardiac autonomic balance in post-bariatric patients. Most of these studies included patients using drugs interfering in the autonomic nervous system. This study assessed the time course of changes in the sympathovagal balance after bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) in 26 women free from drugs. A 10-min electrocardiographic recording was obtained at baseline and at 3 and 6 months after surgery. Temporal and spectral domains of heart rate variability were analysed. The time domain components of cardiac vagal modulation increased progressively after surgery. In the frequency domain, high frequency power increased from 24.9 at baseline (18.0 to 46.3) to 44.5 at 3 months (23.4 to 65.6), and 54.1 at 6...

Association between heart rate, heart rate variability, cortisol, glucose and electrolytes in healthy newborn calves Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Quevedo,D.A.C.; Lourenço,M.L.G.; Bolaños,C.A.D.; Takahira,R.K.; Oba,E.; Alfonso,A.; Chiacchio,S.B..
ABSTRACT This study aims at evaluating the effects of electrolytes, glucose and cortisol levels over heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy newborn calves. Seventeen healthy Holstein calves were evaluated during their first month of life, and the plasma concentrations of glucose, cortisol, calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium and potassium were analyzed. HRV indexes were determined in the time and frequency domains through the analysis of neonatal electrocardiogram recordings. In the first day, low blood levels of phosphorus presented a strong correlation with the HR and the increased high-frequency components of HRV. The plasma concentrations of magnesium decreased significantly throughout the 35 days, revealing a positive...

Participation of the autonomic cardiac system in dogs with chronic myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Navarrete,R.A.; Camacho,A.A..
ABSTRACT An exploratory multivariate analysis of factors of echocardiographic variables and those of the Holter test of 38 dogs with MVMD staged in three classes (class 1a, class 1b, class 2) of congestive heart failure proposed by the ISACHC. The purpose of this analysis was learning the processes that would explain the behavior of the variables described, using exploratory multivariate techniques of factors. Five independent factors were determined (PNS to SF) which altogether explain 82.17% of the shared variance of the data. It was identified that among the five factors, the first process (PNS) is the first factor in importance, recruiting the highest percentage of variance (37.96%) and represents the participation of the cardiac autonomic nervous...

Heart rate recovery after exercise: relations to heart rate variability and complexity BJMBR
Javorka,M.; Zila,I.; Balhárek,T.; Javorka,K..
Physical exercise is associated with parasympathetic withdrawal and increased sympathetic activity resulting in heart rate increase. The rate of post-exercise cardiodeceleration is used as an index of cardiac vagal reactivation. Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) and complexity can provide useful information about autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. The aim of the present study was to ascertain the association between heart rate decrease after exercise and HRV parameters. Heart rate was monitored in 17 healthy male subjects (mean age: 20 years) during the pre-exercise phase (25 min supine, 5 min standing), during exercise (8 min of the step test with an ascending frequency corresponding to 70% of individual maximal power output) and...

Time course of changes in heart rate and blood pressure variability in rats with myocardial infarction BJMBR
Aires,R.; Pimentel,E.B.; Forechi,L.; Dantas,E.M.; Mill,J.G..
Our aim was to determine the time course of changes in autonomic balance in the acute (1 and 3 days), sub-acute (7 days) and chronic (28 days) phases of myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. Autonomic balance was assessed by temporal and spectral analyses of blood pressure variability (BPV) and heart rate variability (HRV). Pulsatile blood pressure (BP) recordings (30 min) were obtained in awake and unrestrained male Wistar rats (N = 77; 8-10 weeks old) with MI (coronary ligature) or sham operation (SO). Data are reported as means±SE. The high frequency (HF) component (n.u.) of HRV was significantly lower in MI-1- (P<0.01) and MI-3-day rats (P<0.05) than in their time-control groups (SO-1=68±4 vs MI-1=35.3±4.3; SO-3=71±5.8 vs MI-3=45.2±3.8), without...

The purpose of the present study was to determine if autonomic heart rate modulation, indicated by heart rate variability (HRV), differs during supine rest and head-up tilt (HUT) when sedentary and endurance-trained cyclists are compared. Eleven sedentary young men (S) and 10 trained cyclists (C) were studied. The volunteers were submitted to a dynamic ECG Holter to calculate HRV at rest and during a 70º HUT. The major aerobic capacity of athletes was expressed by higher values of <img src="/img/revistas/bjmbr/v38n4/Vo.gif">at anaerobic threshold and peak conditions (P < 0.05). At rest the athletes had lower heart rates (P < 0.05) and higher values in the time domain of HRV compared with controls (SD of normal RR interval, SDNN, medians): 59.1...

Ovariectomy does not affect the cardiac sympathovagal balance of female SHR but estradiol does BJMBR
Dias,D.P.M.; Oliveira,M.; Salgado,H.C.; Fazan Jr.,R..
The low incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, in premenopausal women has led to the conclusion that ovarian hormones may have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. We evaluated the effects of ovariectomy and/or estradiol on sympathovagal balance and heart rate variability (HRV) in female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with tachycardia and compared them to Wistar rats (12 weeks old; N = 8-12). Ovariectomy (OVX) and/or estradiol (10 µg/kg) did not affect basal arterial pressure in either rat strain, but estradiol increased basal heart rate (HR) in OVX SHR (454 ± 18 vs 377 ± 9 bpm). HR changes elicited by methylatropine and propranolol were used to evaluate the sympathovagal balance. Ovariectomy did not affect the...

Migliaro,E.R.; Contreras,P.; Bech,S.; Etxagibel,A.; Castro,M.; Ricca,R.; Vicente,K..
In order to assess the relative influence of age, resting heart rate (HR) and sedentary life style, heart rate variability (HRV) was studied in two different groups. The young group (YG) consisted of 9 sedentary subjects aged 15 to 20 years (YG-S) and of 9 nonsedentary volunteers (YG-NS) also aged 15 to 20. The elderly sedentary group (ESG) consisted of 16 sedentary subjects aged 39 to 82 years. HRV was assessed using a short-term procedure (5 min). R-R variability was calculated in the time-domain by means of the root mean square successive differences. Frequency-domain HRV was evaluated by power spectrum analysis considering high frequency and low frequency bands. In the YG the effort tolerance was ranked in a bicycle stress test. HR was similar for both...

A comparative analysis of preprocessing techniques of cardiac event series for the study of heart rhythm variability using simulated signals BJMBR
Guimarães,H.N.; Santos,R.A.S..
In the present study, using noise-free simulated signals, we performed a comparative examination of several preprocessing techniques that are used to transform the cardiac event series in a regularly sampled time series, appropriate for spectral analysis of heart rhythm variability (HRV). First, a group of noise-free simulated point event series, which represents a time series of heartbeats, was generated by an integral pulse frequency modulation model. In order to evaluate the performance of the preprocessing methods, the differences between the spectra of the preprocessed simulated signals and the true spectrum (spectrum of the model input modulating signals) were surveyed by visual analysis and by contrasting merit indices. It is desired that estimated...

The association between subclinical thyroid dysfunctions and autonomic modulation changes has been described by many studies with conflicting results. We aimed to analyze the association between subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCHyper), subclinical hypothyroidism (SCHypo), and heart rate variability (HRV) using the baseline from ELSA-Brasil. SCHyper and SCHypo were classified by use of medication to treat thyroid disorders, thyrotropin levels respectively above and under the reference range, and normal free thyroxine levels. For HRV, the participants underwent 10 min in supine position and the R-R intervals of the final 5 min were selected for analysis. We first used linear regression models to report crude data and then, multivariate adjustment for...
