A "high He-4/He-3" mantle material detected under the East Pacific Rise (15 degrees 4 ' N) ArchiMer
Mougel, Berengere; Moreira, Manuel; Agranier, Arnaud.
We investigate in details helium isotope data reported in Mougel et al. (2014) for 14 basaltic samples collected on the East Pacific Rise by submersible (15 degrees 4N) where the ridge interacts with the Mathematician seamounts. Samples locations are separated by only few hundred meters across a 15km along-axis profile. The data reveal a strong geochemical variability that has never been observed at such high spatial resolution for helium isotope compositions. Moreover, they reveal an unusually high He-4/He-3 mantle component also characterized by unradiogenic lead, atypical in oceanic basalts. He-Pb systematics suggests a mixture between a nonradiogenic lead and radiogenic helium pyroxenitic component, recycled from the deep continental lithosphere and...

Helium isotopes at the Rainbow hydrothermal site (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36 degrees 14 ' N) ArchiMer
Jean Baptiste, Philippe; Fourre, Elise; Charlou, Jean-luc; German, Christopher; Radford Knoery, Joel.
The He-3/He-4 ratio and helium concentration have been measured in the vent fluids and the dispersing plume of the Rainbow hydrothermal site, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The He-3/He-4 ratio (7.51 R-a) and He-3 end-member concentration (25 pmol/kg) are in the range of observed values elsewhere on mid-ocean ridges, pointing to the relative homogeneity of the upper mantle with respect to helium isotope geochemistry. He-3 is linearly correlated with methane and manganese throughout the plume, with CH4/He-3 and Mn/He-3 ratios identical to those measured in the hot fluids. The bulk residence time of the plume in the rift valley estimated from the plume He-3 budget is similar to20 days. The He-3 flux transported by the plume, calculated from current-meter...

Helium transport in sediment pore fluids of the Congo-Angola margin ArchiMer
Chaduteau, Carine; Jean-baptiste, Philippe; Fourre, Elise; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre.
During the ZaiRov2 cruise of the ZaiAngo project (1998-2000) on the passive Congo-Angola margin, several gravity cores were analyzed for helium isotopic composition of sedimentary pore waters in two cold fluid seepage zones: the Astrid slide area and the Regab giant pockmark. Gas concentration and isotopic composition are presented along with thermal data in terms of the origin and circulation of fluids. Helium isotope data lie on a mixing line between bottom seawater and an almost pure radiogenic. Helium and temperature vertical profiles are well described by the classic diffusion-advection equation. On the basis of He profiles, we estimate the advection rate on the rim of the pockmark between 1.2 and 2.3 mm/a. The He flux derived for a pure diffusive...

Origin of Light Noble Gases (He, Ne, and Ar) on Earth: A Review ArchiMer
Peron, Sandrine; Moreira, Manuel; Agranier, Arnaud.
We review the different scenarios for the origin of light noble gases (He, Ne, and Ar) on Earth. Several sources could have contributed to the Earth's noble gas budget: implanted solar wind, solar nebula gas, chondrites, and comets. Although there is evidence for solar-like neon in the Earth's mantle, questions remain as to its origin. A new compilation of noble gas data in lunar soils, interplanetary dust particles, micrometeorites, and solar wind allows examination of the implanted solar wind composition, which is key to understanding the solar-like mantle neon isotope composition. We show that lunar soils that reflect this solar-wind-implanted signature have a Ne-20/Ne-22 ratio very close to that of ocean island basalts. New data and calculations...

Tracing helium isotope compositions from mantle source to fumaroles at Oldoinyo Lengai volcano, Tanzania ArchiMer
Mollex, Gaelle; Furi, Evelyn; Burnard, Pete; Zimmermann, Laurent; Chazot, Gilles; Kazimoto, Emmanuel O.; Marty, Bernard; France, Lyderic.
Oldoinyo Lengai is the only volcano on Earth currently erupting natrocarbonatites, of which the source and genesis remain controversial. Cognate xenoliths and fumaroles were sampled at the summit of Oldoinyo Lengai, and deep crustal xenoliths from Oltatwa maar, in 2010 and 2014, after the 2007-2008 sub-Plinian eruption. The summit cognate xenoliths provide direct information on the isotopic composition of the mid-crustal magma chamber that was active during the 2007-2008 explosive eruption. Cognate xenolith-hosted pyroxenes from Oldoinyo Lengai have an average He-3/He-4 = 6.58 +/- 0.46 R-A, similar to values from nearby silicate volcanoes (4.95-7.30 R-A), and reflecting a sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) signature. This similarity implies that...

Constraints on fluid origins and migration velocities along the Marmara Main Fault (Sea of Marmara, Turkey) using helium isotopes ArchiMer
Burnard, P.; Bourlange, S.; Henry, Pierre; Geli, Louis; Tryon, M. D.; Natal'In, B.; Sengor, A. M. C.; Ozeren, M. S.; Cagatay, M. N..
Fluids venting from the submarine portion of the Marmara Main Fault (part of the North Anatolian Fault system, Turkey) were sampled in Ti bottles deployed by submersible. The fluids consist of mixtures of fault derived gases, fault related cold seep fluids, and ambient seawater; these components can readily be distinguished using the isotopes of He and the He/Ne ratios. He-3/He-4 ratios range between 0.03 +/- 0.1 and 4.9 +/- 0.4 Ra, indicating that both crustal and mantle derived sources of helium are sampled by the fault. The dominant gas in all the samples analyzed is methane with the abundance of CO2 below detection (<= 2%) in the mantle rich (high He-3/He-4) fluids. This is in contrast to nearly all mantle derived fluids where the C species are...

Origine et circulation des fluides dans les sédiments des marges. Contribution de l'hélium et du méthane dans la compréhension des processus. Étude de 2 zones actives ArchiMer
Chaduteau, Carine.
Fluid migration is a very important process in marine sediments on margins. Studying fluids is fundamental to constrain the energy potential of margins. Methane is the predominant gas in marine sediments, deriving primarily from the degradation of organic matter. However methane could be also generated through the serpentinization of mantle rocks underlying the sedimentary cover in some specific geodynamical settings. One way to test this hypothesis is to use helium isotopes, which are known to be powerful tracers of the fluid-mantle interaction. To this purpose, a new method has been developed for the sampling and the quantitative extraction of dissolved helium from sediment pore-waters. During the Zairov2 and Vicking cruises, samples were collected in...
