Detection of a mollicute-like organism in kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer

A filamentous form of mollicute-like bacterium was detected during a routine health survey of wild adult kuruma shrimp Penaeus japonicus. The kuruma shrimp were native to Japan and were imported to Korea. The histology showed no pathological changes. Transmission electron microscopy revealed extensive infections of hepatopancreatic epithelial cells by a pleomorphic, filamentous intracellular bacterium. The filamentous bacterium was of about 60 nm in diameter and 300 nm to more than 1µm in length. The morphology of bacteria were filamentous and branched with terminal blebs, or knobs, on the branches. They lacked the cell wall, and were bounded by the plasma membrane. Partial characterization of hepatopancreatic and extracellular digestive proteinases of wild and cultivated Octopus maya ArchiMer

Proteinases from hepatopancreas (HP) and gastric juice (GJ) from wild and cultured red octopus (Octopus maya) were characterized. Hepatopancreas assays revealed optimal activity at pH 4, 9-10 and 10 for wild and pH 3, 8, and 9, for cultured octopuses, for total proteinases, trypsin and chymotrypsin, respectively. In the gastric juice, maximum activity was recorded at pH 6, 8, and 7 for total proteinases, trypsin, and chymotrypsin, respectively for both wild and cultured octopus. A reduction on enzyme activity of 70 and 20% was observed in HP and GJ extracts, respectively when protease inhibitor Pepstatin A was used. Estudio morfologico e histologico del hepatopancreas del langostino Pleoticus muelleri (Bate)(Crustacea, Penaeoidea) OceanDocs

The decapod crustacean hepatopancreas is a conspicuous and bilobated gland composed of simple, blind-ended tubules, which opens into the pyloric stomach. The gland is completely surrounded by connective tissue which limits also the tubules. In this work midgut gland cells of Argentine shrimp Pleoticus muelleri were investigated under light microscopy. Each tubule has three defined zones: distal, middle and proximal. Four cell types, E-cells (embryonic), F (fibrillar), R (resorptive) and B (secretory) form the epithelium. The histology of the hepatopancreas of P. muelleri is described, emphasizing the particularities in this species whose general features can be compared to that of other decapod crustaceans.

Goniopsis cruentata is a common semi-terrestrial crab in Brazilian mangroves and an important fishery resource for traditional communities in the northeastern Brazilian coast. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge about the species, this study evaluated the carapace width and weight growth curves, the relative growth of weight versus carapace width, and the temporal variation of gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices for the species. The aim of this study is to describe the ultrastructure of the hepatopancreas of P. argentinus in intermoult. P. argentinus hepatopancreas was studied using standard TEM techniques. Each tubule consists of four cellular types: E (embryonic), F (fibrillar), R (resorptive) and B (blister like). E-cells have embryonic features and some of them were found in mitosis. Functional cytology of the hepatopancreas of Palaemonetes argentinus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Caridea) under osmotic stress BABT

The present work describes the effect of different salinities on the functional morphology of the P. argentinus hepatopancreas and analyses the tissue recovery after re-acclimation to freshwater. Adult prawns of both sexes at sexual rest were collected from a tributary of the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon. The prawns were acclimated in aquaria to four salinity conditions: 0 (control), 8, 16 and 24‰. To evaluate the possible tissular recovery, after 60 days individuals from all the treatments were gradually acclimated to freshwater and maintained for other 30 days. Amorphous phosphate granules are present in vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. The functions attributed to these structures depend on their mineral contents and organic matrix composition. In the present study we have determined zinc concentrations in the hepatopancreas of the crab Ucides cordatus from regions contaminated with zinc, and the elemental composition of hepatopancreal phosphate granules. Organisms were collected from the contaminated areas of Sepetiba Bay (SB) and Guanabara Bay (GB), and from a non-contaminated area, Ribeira Bay (RB).
