Genetic control of partial resistance to Asian soybean rust doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.16919 Agronomy
Martins, Juliana Araújo Santos; Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Triângulo Mineiro; Juliatti, Fernando Cezar; Universidade Federal de Uberlandia.
The genetic control of rust resistance was studied using the Caiapônia x IAC-100 and Luziânia x Potenza crosses. The F2 and F3 generations were evaluated. Rust severity was quantified through visual assessment of the middle third of three leaflets per plant and performed by three different evaluators; the average score was calculated foreach individual plant. From these data, we estimated the mean and variance of the genetic components by employing the weighted least squares method. The estimated number of genes and broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities were also obtained. It was concluded that rust resistance is a characteristic controlled by 2 to 23 genes that are predominantly dominant. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability was greater than 70% for...

Brachiaria brizantha Stapf access evaluation and estimates of genetic parameters for agronomical characters - DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v31i1.6605 Agronomy
Basso, Kelen Cristina; UEM; Resende, Rosangela Maria Simeão; EMBRAPA; Valle, Cacilda Borges do; EMBRAPA; Gonçalves, Manoel Carlos; UFGD; Lempp, Beatriz; UFGD.
Currently, Brachiaria brizantha Stapf is the tropical grass with the largest cultivated area in Brazil, being responsible for a major part of the seed market and for the increase in animal production. There are several superior genotypes available in germplasm banks, collected from the African continent and in need of evaluation. The selection of these genotypes must be based on predicted genotype values of the individuals in function of being perennial plants and of unsexed propagation. The standard procedure for the prediction of genetic values is the individual BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Predictor), using estimates of variance components achieved by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) on an individual model. With the aim of selecting B. brizantha...

Genetic parameters for performance and carcass traits in a paternal 1 lineage of broiler Anais da ABC (AABC)
CRUZ,VALDECY A.R.; GRUPIONI,NATALIA V.; MENDONÇA,GABRIELA G.; VENTURINI,GUILHERME C.; LEDUR,MONICA C.; PEIXOTO,JANE O.; MUNARI,DANISIO P..
Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate variance components for performance and carcass traits in a paternal broiler line. The (co)variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to the animal model, including the fixed effect of group (sex and hatch) and additive genetic and residual as random effects. Estimated heritability for performance traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.42. The genetic correlations between traits ranged from -0.50 to 0.97. The heritability estimates of feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion from 35 to 41 days of age were of low magnitude. The genetic correlations among them were favorable to genetic selection. These results suggest that moderate genetic gain can be obtained to the...

DINIZ,RAFAEL P.; OLIVEIRA,EDER J. DE.
Abstract: This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and correlations between morphological, agronomic and root quality traits of cassava plants, as well as to study cause and effect relationships through path analysis. A total of 814 genotypes were evaluated from 2011 to 2015. The joint analysis of the data was performed by the mixed models approach. The predicted genetic values of the genotypes were used to estimate the genetic correlations among as well the path analysis. The estimates of heritability of the genotype means ranged from 0.31 (commercial fresh root yield – CRY) to 0.62 (plant height - PLH). The highest genetic correlation coefficient estimates were observed for starch yield (STY) × total fresh root yield (FRY) (0.97). The results of...

Interactive effects of genotype x environment on the live weight of GIFT Nile tilapias Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,SHEILA N. DE; RIBEIRO,RICARDO P.; OLIVEIRA,CARLOS A.L. DE; ALEXANDRE FILHO,LUIZ; OLIVEIRA,ALINE M.S.; LOPERA-BARRERO,NELSON M.; SANTANDER,VICTOR F.A.; SANTANA,RENAN A.C..
ABSTRACT In this paper, the existence of a genotype x environment interaction for the average daily weight in GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in different regions in the state of Paraná (Brazil) was analyzed. The heritability results were high in the uni-characteristic analysis: 0.71, 0.72 and 0.67 for the cities of Palotina (PL), Floriano (FL) and Diamond North (DN), respectively. Genetic correlations estimated in bivariate analyzes were weak with values between 0.12 for PL-FL, 0.06 for PL and 0.23 for DN-FL-DN. The Spearman correlation values were low, which indicated a change in ranking in the selection of animals in different environments in the study. There was heterogeneity in the phenotypic variance among the three regions and...

Components of (co)variance of the days open in Siboney dairy cows Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
González-Peña,D.; Espinoza-Villavicencio,J.L.; Guerra,D.; Palacios,A.; Évora,J.C.; Portales,A..
The records of 63,406 calvings of Siboney dairy cows (5/8 Holstein 3/8 Cuban Zebu) were used to estimate the components of covariance of the days open (DO). Five models were used: of repeatability; univariate; bivariate; of random regression with Legendre polynomials and the parity number as predicting variable; and a model of random regression with Legendre polynomials and heterogeneity of the residual variance. The heritability obtained with the univariate model was 0.09 in the first calving and decreased to 0.05 in the fifth. A higher estimate of heritability (0.12) was obtained with the repeatability model. When the model of random regression with heterogeneity of the residual variance was used, the heritability was higher than the values estimated...

Genetic parameters estimates for gestation length in beef cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rocha,J.C.M.C.; Tonhati,H.; Alencar,M.M.; Lôbo,R.B..
Variance components were estimated for gestation length fitting the additive direct effect of calf, maternal genetic effect and sire effect as random effects. The statistical models also included the fixed effects of contemporary group, that included the date of breeding (AI), date of birth, and sex of calf, and the covariate age of dam at calving (linear and quadratic). Two different models were used, model 1 considering GL as a trait of the calf, and model 2 considering GL as a trait of the dam. The means of gestation length for the purebred animals were 294.55 days (males) and 293.34 days (females), while for the crossbred animals they were 292.49 days (males) and 292.55 days (females). Genetic control of aluminum tolerance in tropical maize germplasm Bragantia
Coelho,Caroline de Jesus; Bombardelli,Renato Gustavo Hoffmann; Schulze,Guilherme Stalchmidt; Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Matiello,Rodrigo Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the most limiting factor to maize crop productivity in acid soils. Therefore, the understanding of inheritance of Al tolerance in maize is important for the developmentof more adequate procedures for Al tolerant genotypes selection. In this sense, the objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance, and the general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for Al tolerance in tropical maize. First, we evaluated diallel crosses of maize from landrace and hybrid germplasms for Al tolerance through the minimal solution methodology. The DIF data (root growth difference) were analyzed by Griffing diallel model. Later the additive-dominant genetic model proposed by Mather and Jinks (1971) was used to estimate the...
