Baybean ( Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC.); organogenesis, morphological and anatomical studies Gayana Botánica
Mohajer,Sadegh; Taha,Rosna Mat; Mohamed,Normadiha; Razak,Ummi Nur Abdul.
ABSTRACT Morphological and anatomical studies comprised leaf venation, histological analysis and epidermal peeling were carried out on Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC.). Anatomical studies of the leaf and root determined the presence of cuticle and oil glands, arrangement of cells and the structure of vascular system. The dorsiventral leaf with pinnate venation and amphistomatic leaf with paracytic type stomata were embedded below the epidermis. Trichomes and oil glands were also observed on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of leaf. Longitudinal sections of the callus showed the existence of meristematic cells, which could give rise to plant regeneration. In the process of organogenesis, adventitious shoots emerged from leaf and stem explants within 2 months...

Histology of the liver of Oligosarcus jenynsii (Ostariophysi, Characidae) from Los Padres Lake, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Petcoff,Gladys M.; Díaz,Alcira O.; Escalante,Alicia H.; Goldemberg,Adriana L..
The liver is an organ notable for its sensitivity to a great variety of environmental factors. It is composed of a parenchyma divided into irregular lobules by the exocrine pancreas or hepatopancreas; the pancreatic cells are arranged around a branch of the portal vein. The hepatocytes are radially arranged in cords around a central sinusoid. The liver histomorphology and the organization of exocrine pancreatic tissue of O. jenynsii (Günther, 1864) is similar to the acinar morphology of many teleosts, including freshwater and marine species. The aim of the present work was to carry out the histological analysis of the liver of Oligosarcus jenynsii, one of the most common species inhabiting Los Padres Lake (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina).

Histologia del sistema reproductor masculino de Helobdella hyalina (Hirudinea, Glossiphoniidae) en Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gullo,Betina Sandra.
A detailed preliminary histological analysis of Helobdella hyalina Ringuelet, 1942 male system from Los Talas, Buenos Aires, Argentina is described. Six pairs of testisacs, located between the crop caeca, form the male reproductive system. Each testisac is clothed by the mesotelium. Inside it, the germinal cells are connected to the citophore and develop functional unit called poliplast. The spermatozoa are released into testisacs after the reabsortion of the citophore. Five stages of spermatogenesis are described taking into account the successive maturation stages of germinal cells and the changes in the citophore size. Lining cells and gland cells were found in the seminal vesicle. Five different types of gland cells are placed inside the ejaculatory...

Revaluation of the taxonomic characters and distribution of Omalonyx geayi (Gastropoda, Succineidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Arruda,Janine O.; Barker,Gary M.; Thomé,José W..
ABSTRACT Omalonyx geayi Tillier, 1980 was originally described on the basis of specimens from Kaw swamp, French Guiana. This species distinguished from other of Omalonyx d'Orbigny, 1837: (i) by hermaphrodite duct twice as long and sacculate, without radial ducts but a funnel-shaped insertion on the ovariotestis, and (ii) by longitudinal wrinkled folds on the phallus inner wall. Two recent collections - from Trinidad and Carauari (Amazonas, Brazil) included specimens with ovariotestis and hermaphrodite duct morphologies similar to that originally described for O. geayi, but with phallus morphology not consistent with identification as O. geayi. A further eight lots, from Suriname, Ecuador, Brazil (Amazonas and Alagoas States), Bolivia and Cayenne-Kourou...

Ovarian development and spawning of Macrobrachium amazonicum (Crustacea, Decapoda) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ventura,Emerson; Winick-Silva,Allysson; Shinozaki-Mendes,Renata A..
ABSTRACT Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862) is the most important species for aquaculture native to South America. This study evaluates the phenotypic plasticity of females of Macrobrachium amazonicum with respect to the gonadal development, and determines the spawning type. Our study consisted of macro and microscopic analysis of the reproductive tract. Ovaries exhibited the following reproductive cells in developmental sequence: oogonia (OO) - mean diameter and standard deviation of 25.4 ± 6.5 μm; previtellogenic oocyte (PVO) - 61.7 ± 10.7 μm, vitellogenic oocyte (VO) - 113.9 ± 24.5 μm; and mature oocyte (MO) - 308.7 ± 56.3 μm. Ovaries increased in volume due to vitellogenesis and changing of basophilic to acidophilic composition. Follicular cells,...

Morphological aspects of cell reabsorption in laying queens and workers of Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Patrício,Karina; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
The occurrence of cell reabsorption in the ovaries of queens in several rates of laying eggs, artificially impeded of laying, and in nurse workers, of Apis mellifera (Linnaeus, 1758), was studied with light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two types of structures were described and named by analogy with vertebrates ovarian structures, as corpus luteus, when resulting from the reabsorption of the follicular cells after ovulation, and corpus atresicus when resulting from total follicular reabsorption at any oocyte developmental stage. These structures have the same morphological characteristics and physiological signification in both castes. The corpus luteus occurrence indicates ovulation and its number is correspondent to the queen's rates...

Morphology and dynamics of male gametogenesis in Sympterygia bonapartii (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae) from Northern Patagonia Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Moya,Ana C.; Andrade,María C. Díaz; Galíndez,Elena J..
ABSTRACT The smallnose fanskate, Sympterygia bonapartii Müller & Henle, 1841 is one of the most disembarked items in commercial harbors in Argentina. In this work, the microscopic architecture of mature male gonads and the dynamics of cysts development are analyzed as a contribution to awareness of the reproductive biology of the species. Some biological data related to reproduction are given as well. Two seasons were sampled (fall and spring) and length classes's frequency distribution and maturity stages frequency distribution are given. Size at first sexual maturation for males was estimated at 57 cm of total length. Testes are symmetric, peer, lobed, with several germinal zones. Inside the gonads, there are many spermatocysts, containing...

Caractérisation génétique de l’effort reproducteur de l’huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, dans le cadre des mortalités estivales de juvéniles : Approch QTL ArchiMer
Flahauw, Emilie.
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is a major aquacultured species whose production represents an economic interest at worldwide, european and french levels. However, this species undergoes summer mortalities recorded from the beginning of the 20th century and, since 2008, this phenomenon increased and threatens mainly juvenile oysters. Aquaculture production of oysters suffers consequences of mass mortalities, that’s why this phenomenon has been studied for many years. In France, the bacterium Vibrio splendidus and the Ostreid virus Herpes Virus 1 (OsHV-1) are often associated with mass mortality outbreaks of juveniles oysters and it was demonstrated that selected individuals for resistance to summer mortality were able to slow the increasing in viral...

Gonad volume assessment in the oyster Crassostrea gigas: Comparison between a histological method and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) method ArchiMer
Flahauw, Emilie; Quellec, Stephane; Davenel, Armel; Degremont, Lionel; Lapegue, Sylvie; Hatt, Philippe-jacques.
Previous studies comparing Crassostrea gigas selected lines with different susceptibility to summer mortality concluded that the higher the reproductive effort the lower the survival. But theywere lacking individual followup of this reproductive effort which would be of great interest to help us to understand the physiology of the oysters facing summermortalities. Themost frequently usedmethod for assessing the volume of the gonad is to measure the area it occupies on histological sections. Gonad measurement by magnetic resonance imaging, in contrast, is non-destructive and therefore makes it possible to assess individual evolution as well as to compare individuals. The present study compared the values of gonad volume by thismethodwith the values of gonad...

Dynamique et enzymologie de la digestion chez l'huitre Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Boucaud, C; Lebesnerais, C; Lubet, P; Lihrmann, I.
Feeding experiments carried out on Crassostrea gigas allowed the authors to set up the stages and the timing of the movement of food throughout the digestive tract. Various activities involved in digestion (glycosidases, esterases, and peptidases) were investigated histochemically in the digestive tract in order to localize the sites of absorption and the sites of protein and carbohydrate digestion. An explicative model of the different stages of digestion is proposed.

Bioactive extracellular compounds produced by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum are highly detrimental for oysters ArchiMer
Castrec, Justine; Soudant, P.; Payton, L.; Tran, D.; Miner, Philippe; Lambert, C.; Le Goic, N.; Huvet, Arnaud; Quillien, Virgile; Boullot, F.; Amzil, Zouher; Hegaret, Helene; Fabioux, C..
Blooms of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium spp., known as producers of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), are regularly detected on the French coastline. PSTs accumulate into harvested shellfish species, such as the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, and can cause strong disorders to consumers at high doses. The impacts of Alexandrium minutum on C. gigas have often been attributed to its production of PSTs without testing separately the effects of the bioactive extracellular compounds (BECs) with allelopathic, hemolytic, cytotoxic or ichthyotoxic properties, which can also be produced by these algae. The BECs, still uncharacterized, are excreted within the environment thereby impacting not only phytoplankton, zooplankton but also marine invertebrates and...

A shortcut method for sexing juvenile European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L. ArchiMer
Menu, Bruno; Peruzzi, Stefano; Vergnet, Alain; Vidal, Marie-odile; Chatain, Beatrice.
The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and effective method of sexing juvenile sea bass with minimum labour and material. To this end, the gonad squash mount technique was applied along with macroscopic techniques for sexing a large number of experimental fish at the age of 215-275 days post fertilization (p.f.). At this age, 90% of the 3894 fish could be unambiguously sexed by macroscopic examination of their gonads, whereas the remaining proportion was identified using squash mount preparations (10%). The accuracy of the observations was measured up to classical histology procedures. Undifferentiated fish accounted for 0.1% of the total population only. The application of the squash mount technique holds out the prospect of considerable...

Identifying Robust Proxies of Gonad Maturation for the Protandrous Hermaphrodite Tridacna maxima (Röding, 1798, Bivalvia) from Individual to Population Scale ArchiMer
Menoud, Mathilde; Van Wynsberge, Simon; Le Moullac, Gilles; Levy, Peva; Andrefouet, Serge; Remoissenet, Georges; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila.
Monitoring gonadmaturation for protandrous and functional hermaphrodite species such as the giant clamTridacna maxima is difficult due to the juxtaposition and relative proportion ofmale and female tissues in the gonad [gonadal sex ratio (GSR)]. Here, the relevance of the widely used gonadosomatic index (GSI) as proxy of giant clam gonad maturation is tested with a large dataset (n = 265). Gonadosomatic index is compared with other indices, namely the proportion of the male part harboring spermatozoids, the proportion of empty oocyte follicles, the mean oocyte diameter, and the oocyte elongation. At gonad scale, high index variability highlighted partial spawning. At individual scale, male and female maturation proxies were contrasted, showing either...

AMP-deaminase in elasmobranch fish: A comparative histochemical and enzymatic study ArchiMer
Thebault, Marie-t; Izem, Lahoucine; Leroy, Jean Paul; Gobin, Eric; Charrier, Gregory; Raffin, Jean-paul.
AMP-deaminase activity was measured in white muscle from a wide range of fish, including one cyclostome, 13 chondrosteans, and one teleost to elucidate the pattern of the AMP-deaminase activity in white muscle of fish. Compared to a mammalian (rat) muscle extract, low enzyme activities are found in the cyclostome and two elasmobranchs from two families (Scyliorhinidae, Hexanchidae). In contrast, higher AMP-deaminase activities, similar to mammals, are expressed in Squalidae, all families of skates, Chimaeridae and in the teleostean fish. We then compared AMP-deaminase activities in red and white muscles from two representative elasmobranch fish, the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) and the thornback ray (Raja clavata). The fibre type composition and...
