A DOUBLE-HURDLE MODEL OF FOOD DEMAND WITH ENDOGENOUS UNIT VALUES AgEcon
Dong, Diansheng; Gould, Brian W..
This study develops a unique double-hurdle model of demand for composite food commodities which endogenizes unit values. The model structure allows us to account for the inability to observe such values for non-purchasing households and simultaneously adjusts for quality demand effects reflected in these unit values. Application to Mexican household food expenditure data shows the importance of controlling for the quality of composite goods. We find that poultry and pork expenditures depend on both quantity demanded and quality desired.

The Effects of a "Fat Tax" on the Nutrient Intake of French Households AgEcon
Allais, Olivier; Bertail, Patrice; Nichele, Veronique.
This article assesses the effects of a "fat tax" on the nutrient intake of French households across different income groups using a method that estimates the nutrient elasticities of French households. We estimate a complete demand system by aggregating an individual demand system over cohorts. The use of a cohort model is justified by the incompleteness of our data. We find that a "fat tax" would have ambiguous and extremely small effects on the nutrient intake of French households, and its associated economic welfare costs would be similarly weak.

The economic and social weight of small scale agriculture. Evidence from the Rural Income Generating Activities survey data. AgEcon
Karfakis, Panagiotis; Hammam Howe, Tarek.
In current economic reality, there seems to be a clear need to recognize, characterize and place small scale agriculture in a setup which accounts for novel trends in the modes of doing business in the global economy and with respect to the changing role of agriculture along development transition. Providing that ground it will make it possible to design and promote appropriate policy strategies that will best accommodate small scale farmers’ needs and exploit their potential for agricultural development. The present paper employs a multi country household survey database developed from ESA-FAO, and a series of ad hoc land thresholds to categorize rural households as small or large scale farmers and identify some of their key characteristics as well as...

ESTIMATION OF FOOD DEMAND AND NUTRIENT ELASTICITIES FROM HOUSEHOLD SURVEY DATA AgEcon
Huang, Kuo S.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
A methodology for estimating a demand system from household survey data is developed and applied to the 1987-88 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey data. The empirical results are sets of estimated demand elasticities for households segmented with different income levels. In addition, we apply these demand elasticities to estimate the implied nutrient elasticities for low-income households. The estimation results are useful in evaluating some food policy and program effects related to households of a specific income level.

Public Policy and Diet Quality: Impact of Prices on Nutrient Adequacy using French Expenditure Data from 1996 to 2005 AgEcon
Allen, Thomas G.; Allais, Olivier; Nichele, Veronique; Padilla, Martine.
This paper aims at simulating optimal prices satisfying public health recommendations in terms of nutrient adequacy. This implies to estimate a complete food demand system in order to compute price elasticities. Food consumption behaviors are described by an AI functional form [Deaton and Muellbauer(1980)] augmented to control for habit persistence. The demand system is estimated using the Iterated Least Square Estimator developed by Blundell and Robin (1999). We use French household expenditure data drawn from TNS Worldpanel covering 130 periods of 4 weeks from 1996 to 2005. Given the nature of our data, households are split into 8 cohorts based on two socio-demographic variables: date of birth and social status. A revised aggregation into 27 food groups...
