The fecundity and population structure of the cockle, Anadara antiquata L., from sandy/muddy intertidal habitats in the intertidal of Ocean Road beach was examined from January to December 2001. A. antiquata is hand harvested, for domestic consumption, mainly by women and children, with the empty shells sold to traders. The sex ratio from combined data of all classes deviates significantly from 1:1 with the ratio of females to males increasing significantly above 41 mm shell length. Hermaphrodites were also observed in this size range indicating a protrandric hermaphrodite situation with males maturing earlier than females. Fecundity increases with an increase in shell length, with a mean of 1,652,000 (+/- 562,000 [or 40%] SE) eggs per female and... |

Hake Merluccius hubbsi fecundity was estimated with the gravimetric method using ovaries with hydrated oocytes without post-ovulatory follicles. Samples were obtained in three research cruises in the Argentine Sea, off Chubut Province, SW of Peninsula Valdes between 42°S and 45°S, near Isla Escondida, during December 1993, 1994 and 1996, time which coincides with the most important reproductive activity. Relative fecundity values were 722 plus or minus 107, 606 plus or minus 60 and 533 plus or minus 26 oocytes per gram of female without ovaries, respectively. Partial fecundity was adjusted to a potential model for total length and weight without ovaries, corresponding: F=0.9988 Lt3.294 and F=197.91 P1.1585 for 1994 and F=6.9785 Lt2.816 and F=552.22 P0.9889... |

Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is probably the most abundant brachyuran crab inhabiting mangrove forests in East Africa. However, its fecundity is poorly understood. Crabs were randomly sampled during spring low tides from January to April 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Carapace width (CW), abdomen width (AW), weight (W) and egg numbers (EN) were recorded. The average fecundity was 1599 ± 842 eggs, ranging from 529 (CW = 5.0 mm) to 4250 (CW = 24.1 mm) eggs respectively. Egg number increased significantly with increase in crab size. This information contributes to our knowledge of the reproductive potential and the reproductive processes occurring in this species of crab. |

Argopecten circularis (Sowerby, 1835) fecunddity was estimated during spawnings of February-March 1989 and March-May 1990 in Bahía Concepción, Baja California sur, México. In general, the number of oocytes released during the spawning of Argopecten circularis were potentially relatad to shell height. The calculated average oocyte wet weight during the maturity period was 8.9033x10^-8 g. Spawning ocurred ¡n individuáis 44 to 77 mm in height. The highest fecundity occurred ¡n bivalves 58 to 77 mm ¡n height. Mean fecundity obtained for all heigts by regression analysis during spawning in February-march 1989 was 12, 102, 243 oocytes. In April-May of the same year, there were 17, 917, 006 oocytes, and during March-May 1990, 16, 938, 117 oocytes. |

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |

The red grouper (Epinephelus morio), of the family Serranidae, is the most important species, caught in the Campeche Bank, Mexico. The knowledge related with their reproduction is important for an adequate management. We found that sexual proportion (WH) changed by size. The biggest proportions of females was in the size class of 30 cm (1:31.5). Fishes over 75 cm, showed a not significantly different proportion from 1:l. Sex change was found between 30-35 cm (Lt). Fatty rnesenterial increases during the Fall (September, October and November), decreasing during Winter (December, January and Febrary). Spawning process starts in December (early winter) and tinish in May, occurring a massive spawning during February, March and April. 77% of mature females were... |
