Fecundity and population structure of cockles, Anadara antiquata L. 1758 (Bivalvia: Arcidae) from a sandy/muddy beach near Dar es salaam, Tanzania OceanDocs
Mzighani, S..
The fecundity and population structure of the cockle, Anadara antiquata L., from sandy/muddy intertidal habitats in the intertidal of Ocean Road beach was examined from January to December 2001. A. antiquata is hand harvested, for domestic consumption, mainly by women and children, with the empty shells sold to traders. The sex ratio from combined data of all classes deviates significantly from 1:1 with the ratio of females to males increasing significantly above 41 mm shell length. Hermaphrodites were also observed in this size range indicating a protrandric hermaphrodite situation with males maturing earlier than females. Fecundity increases with an increase in shell length, with a mean of 1,652,000 (+/- 562,000 [or 40%] SE) eggs per female and...

Reproducción y fecundidad del surel (Trachurus picturatus australis) OceanDocs
Cassia, M.C.; de Ciechomski, J.D..
Studies on the sexual maturation on the jack mackerel in the area close to Mar del Plata were carried out throughout the whole year, 56 almost ripe females between 160 and 210 mm in total length and between 38 and 78 g is weight were taken into consideration for fecundity determinations. The most importante results obtained during these studies are the following: The gonad index was rather high and reached the value of 11.5.-The reproduction season is a rather one and the spawning occurs mainly in December and January.-It is assumed that a female of this species spawns once over a reproduction season, but shedding numerous batches of eggs in short intervals.-The lowest value found for the fecundity was 15.825 ovocites and the highest one was 82.892.-It is...

Fecundity of the pantropical fiddler crab Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo bay, Southern Mozambique OceanDocs
Litulo, C..
Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is probably the most abundant brachyuran crab inhabiting mangrove forests in East Africa. However, its fecundity is poorly understood. Crabs were randomly sampled during spring low tides from January to April 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Carapace width (CW), abdomen width (AW), weight (W) and egg numbers (EN) were recorded. The average fecundity was 1599 ± 842 eggs, ranging from 529 (CW = 5.0 mm) to 4250 (CW = 24.1 mm) eggs respectively. Egg number increased significantly with increase in crab size. This information contributes to our knowledge of the reproductive potential and the reproductive processes occurring in this species of crab.

Estudios sobre reproducción y fecundidad de la polaca (Micromesistius australis Norma 1937)en el Mar Argentino OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Acha, E.M..
An analysis is presented of reproduction aspects of Argentine Sea blue whiting. The species spawns in the study area mostly during August and September, although some spawners have been detected even in November. Total length at 50-per-cent maturity was 35,4 cm for the males and 38.0 for the females. Significant differences between the length of maturity for individuals of the continental shelf compared to those of the slope, have been obtained. The southern blue whiting is a discontinuous spawner, showing one annual reproduction peak. Fecundity was investigated on the basis of samples collected in 1978 by the RV"Walther Herwig" and "Shinkai Maru". A significant positive correlation was also observed at relating oocyte dry weight and gonad factor, whereas...

Fertilidad y periodicidad del desove en Ostrea puelchana OceanDocs
Morriconi, E.; Calvo, J..
Larvae production by Ostrea puelchana was studied in colections obtained from November to March 1977-78 and 1978-79. During the first period there seems to be a direct relation between the highest percentage of gravid female and the moon crescent quarter. This relation is not repeated in the following year. Compared with other larviparous oysters, O.puelchana produces a greather number of embryons of smaller size, with shorter breeding period and longer planktonic life.

Features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Macchi, G.J.; Pájaro, M..
Different features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) are analyzed. Samples were obtained from research cruises and from commercial catches carried out between March-November 1995, in waters near Malvinas Islands. Reproductive activity of M. australis was observed between the end of July and September, southwest of Malvinas Islands. Oocyte diameter distribution of gravid females and the histological observations show that this species is a batch spawner with determinate annual fecundity. Preliminary estimate of the potential annual fecundity was about 478,000 oocytes for a 51-cm mean total length. Size at first maturity for this species was about 31 cm total length.
