Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Spatial-temporal variability of phytoplankton abundance and species composition in Lake Victoria, Kenya: implication for water quality management 20

Study of phytoplankton abundance and species composition in Lake Victoria, Kenya showed a marked difference between the main lake and the semi-closed Nyanza (Winam) Gulf. Phytoplankton biomass and species composition showed both spatial and seasonal variation. In the main lake the highest chlorophyll concentration was during the short stratification season (August to September) but in the gulf it was after the short and long rainy seasons. Deep mixing depth (aprox. 30 m) in the main lake imposes light limitation to algal growth leading to the observed lower chlorophyll in the main lake, despite the higher soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the main lake compared to the gulf. Ecological studies on fish farms of el-fayoum depression (egypt) 20

This study was carried out at the fish farms of El-Fayioum province during 2003 farming season. They extend along the eastern bank of Lake Qarun. These farms derive its water and drainage wastes into Diar El-Berka Drain. pH values at the chosen farms ranged between 7.43 and 8.91 and its values are certainly optimum for fish culture. Salinity levels at fish farms adjacent to Lake Qarun (Goda 2, 9.5‰) are generally much higher than the other fishing ponds due to seepage from the lake water. Existing conditions in Cabañas Bay are detailed, based on research cruises conducted from February to November 2006. A review of oceanographic, hydro chemical and microbiological parameters is offered. Water temperature presented an average value of 27.49 °C; oxygen availability in general at the bay presents values higher than 5.9 mg/L; salinity showed an average value of 36.8 ups and water pH a mean figure of 8.1. Una de las causas que puede haber incidido de forma negativa en las poblaciones de langosta en el Golfo de Batabanó, son los cambios en la calidad ambiental del medio. Por tal motivo, se estudia el comportamiento de un conjunto de variables abióticas y bióticas y se compara con la información histórica existente que se remonta a la década de los años ’60. Significations ecologiques de la variabilite des polychetes dans le golfe de Tunis 20

The coastal areas, like the gulf of Tunis, are more and more affected by the increasing anthropic activities and nutriment inputs coming from the catchments area. The polychaeta populations show different reactions in front of such conditions and constitute an effective biological tool to detect the first signs of disturbance. In total, nine stations in the north-east of the gulf, were sampled by the Van Veen grab. In this study, the model of ecological groups and biotic index was used. It appears that the general state in the studied area is overall satisfactory, except for some ones where a situation of beginning of imbalance or of transition, seems taking place.

:تقع بحيرة بنزرت في الشمال التونسي وتغذيها عدة أودية تنبع من حوض يمتد على مساحة شاسعة. وتمثل التقلبات المناخية والأنشطة الإقتصادية المتزايدة في السنوات الأخيرة أهم العوامل المؤثرة في هذا الحوض وفي السيول التي تنبع منه في اتجاه البحيرة. لقد قمنا في شهر فيفري في سنة 2003 باقتـاء عينات من الماء مـن 15 مصـب لتحليلـها ( درجة الحرارة، درجة الحموضة، نسبة الأكسجين، الكلوروفيل والمواد العضوية والمعدنية الأزوتية والفسفورية) قصد دراسة هذه الظاهرة. وبينت النتائج التي تم الحصول عليها بأن مياه روافد بحيرة بنزرت تتميز عموما بنسبة عالية للأكسجين وبدرجة حموضة عادية إلى مرتفعة نوعا ما. لكن مياه مصب وادي المرازيق وقنيش والذين يقعان بالتوالي في الشمال الغربي والجنوب الشرقي للبحيرة محملا بأكثر نسبة من المواد الأزوتية والفسفورية. تظهر هذه النتيجة واضحة في التحاليل الإحصائية...

La lagune de Bizerte, située en Tunisie nord-orientale, constitue un bassin récepteur d’un réseau hydrographique bien développé. Afin d’apprécier l’impact des facteurs naturels et anthropiques sur les eaux de ruissellement du bassin versant de cette lagune, une campagne de prélèvement d’eau a été effectuée en février 2003 (période de crue) au niveau de la partie aval de quinze cours d’eau, à raison d’un échantillon par cours d’eau. In this work the result of the project “Determination of the environmental impact on aquaculture in the coastal zone" is presented. Where there were sampled more than 28 points. The water quality of the ecosystems is studied around the shrimp farms like coastal lagoons, rivers and the coastal area, where the shrimp farm get the water from, and at the same time the waste water of the process is spilled. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue identificar y evaluar los impactos ambientales negativos originados por el hombre, tanto directos como indirectos, en tres de los principales ecosistemas costeros del poblado de Baracoa: la laguna costera El Doctor, la playa Baracoa y el estuario de río del mismo nombre. Para la evaluación de los impactos se empleó la metodología RIAM. The impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality within River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin (Kenya) was studied at different hierarchical levels between August 1997 and June 1999. Triplicate water samples were collected on a monthly basis from various stations ranging from the source to the mouth of the river and analyzed for selected physical and chemical water quality parameters using standard analytical methods. Etude de l’effet des facteurs du milieu sur la distribution des bactéries entériques dans la lagune de Bizerte (nord -Tunisie) 20

La présente étude est effectuée dans le but d’évaluer l’effet des facteurs du milieu sur la distribution des populations bactériennes entériques dans un milieu lagunaire : la lagune de Bizerte. Un échantillonnage saisonnier, (novembre 2004, février 2005, mai 2005 et août 2005), portant sur 41 stations couvrant toute la lagune ont été réalisés. Les analyses bactériologiques effectuées ont concerné l’eau et le sédiment. Les paramètres physico-chimiques de l’eau ont été mesurés in-situ simultanément aux différents échantillonnages. Aussi, les paramètres climatiques ont été fournis par une station météorologique située à proximité de la lagune. The anthropogenic affectation was evaluated on the coast N of the Gulf of Batabanó in May 2003 (corresponding to the provinces of Matanzas and Havana), in areas located in the line of the coast. The results were compared with the historical information of the sector. In the coast N and the Ensenada of the Broa, the parameters oxygen saturation, DBO5 and DQO showed characteristic high values of eutrofication. The biggest contribution in the Cianoficies was in the near coastal areas to sources of organic contamination. In the case of the nutrients they show specific data of mesothrofic waters with tendency to the eutrofization and the silts presented a high affectation for toxic metals.
