Efecto de los artes de pesca sobre el tamaño de los peces en una pesquería artesanal del Caribe colombiano. OceanDocs
Narváez-Barandica, J.C.; Herrera-Pertuz, F.A.; Blanco-Racedo, J..

The red grouper fishery is in its decline phase presenting an average annual catch of 8191 t during the 1999 to 2003 period. Through these years Cuban fleet has reduced its fishing area toward the oriental region of the Campeche Bank while the artisanal fleet extended, increasing the overlap of sizes catched by the arisanal-industrial and artisanal-cuban fleets. The size composition of the catch shows that most of the fishes are captured before first maturation size. First catch age is 2 years, and complete fishery recruitment is at age 3 (age of first maturation), this being a factor against fishing sustainability and forcing adoption of management strategies. The natural mortality is calculated (M) for the each age in the fishery by the function Y =...

IODE's Role in Managing and Exchanging Ocean Data from Coastal Zones OceanDocs
The coastal zones in the world are exposed to continuously increasing environmental stresses: pollution, eutrophication, erosion problems which are amplified by steadily growing economic and recreational use and demographic changes. In view of the position of the coastal environment as a buffering zone and interface between land and open ocean, an effort in integrated coastal zone management is required to achieve sustainable development. Besides the possible impact of global climate change also coastal flood protection and related safety aspects are of vital importance to the coastal population, as well as for environment and economy. By their nature, coastal processes are not confined to regional or national boundaries so their solution requires an...

HELCOM/BSRP/ICES and IOC/IODE Training Workshop OceanDocs
Continued degradation of the Baltic Sea ecosystem has affected water quality, modified biodiversity, and impact regional fisheries. The Baltic Sea is now an ecosystem under extreme stress. In response to this situation, the countries in the drainage basin initiated a Joint Comprehensive Environmental Action Program for the Baltic Sea (JCP). The JPC, as adopted in 1992, strengthened and updated in 1998, constitutes a "Strategic Action Plan" for the Baltic Sea region. To address the need for an ecosystem-based approach to resource management, the Baltic Sea Regional Project (BSRP) is designed within the principles of the Large Marine Ecosystem concept, focusing on land-based, coastal zone, and marine activities including activities for improving ecosystem...

Third ODINCARSA-I Marine Data Management Training Workshop OceanDocs
The ODINCARSA program has been arranged among the coastal States of South America and the Caribbean area to provide capacity-building workshops and resource materials in the areas of marine data management and marine information management. ODINCARSA is a sub-program of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange Program (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The principle focus of the program is to provide sufficient training to mid-level professionals in the participating countries, so that National Ocean Data Centers (NODCs) and associated marine libraries can be founded and well managed. The NODCs will, in turn, become part of the international network of ocean data facilities, which feed data into the World...
