Se presentan los resultados de las actividades de prospección pesquera de calamar Illex argentinus en el Golfo San Matías durante el mes de agosto de 2001. Siguiendo los criterios y metodología utilizados en los años previos se autorizó el ingreso al caladero de los BP poteros "Orion II" y "Gloria del Mar I" con el objeto de localizar bancos de calamar y evaluar su rendimiento a la explotación. Los rindes CPUE y la captura nominal diaria observada luego de aproximadamente 10 días de faena indicaron la existencia de concentraciones de calamar de alta densidad y elevados rendimientos pesqueros. Las concentraciones no mostraron signos de declinación en su abundancia relativa a pesar del esfuerzo intensivo de los dos buques autorizados. Se recomienda habilitar... Six exploratory cruises on board of the Japanese RV "Shinko Maru N°3" were carried out between 1997 and 2002 to obtain data on red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)in the oceanic area of the SW Atlantic off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S/43° W-55° W). Between 10 and 32 jigging stations were performed each year during the night at depths of 80-200 m. Positive catches were registered in the whole area investigated with yields ranging between 0.01 and 2.03 kg/ (hour*line)and 0.001-2.26 individuals/(hour*line). Total catches oscilated between 1,426 kg in 2002 and 2,825 kg in 2000 and sea surface temperature at the fishing stations between 7.5° C and 24.5° C. Artisanal fishing activities bivalve extraction through diving, hand-collection of octopuses and beach seine fishing are currently the only ways to exploit the coastal resources inhabiting the Argentine Northern Patagonian gulfs 42°43°S from the SW Atlantic. These are time-restricted activities. Diving and hand-collection are limited by management and sanitary policies while resource variability and commercial demand limit beach fishing. The present study refers to an exploratory fishing survey and appraisal in Salto Grande Reservoirs, during the first year postimpoundment, Samples were taken bimontly at six sampling stations located in different regions of the lake, using a standard gang of gill nets. The fishing effort in each station was taken as one night and the results are expressed in terms of catch per unit effort (CPUE). A survey of the species present vulnerable to the gears used, was made for the explotable species taking into account their distribution according to the mesh size and the proportion of fish at comercial size.
