Polar Alkaloids from the Caribbean Marine Sponge Niphates digitalis OceanDocs

A method involving flash chromatography, semi-preparative phenylhexyl RP HPLC-DAD-ELSD combined with analytic polar-RP HPLC-DAD, was applied to separate and purify six highly nitrogenated bases and a bicyclic amidine alkaloid, the major components of the marine sponge Niphates digitalis. Their structures were identified as 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7- ene (1), deoxycytidine (2), phenylalanine (3), adenosine (4), deoxyguanosine (5), adenine (6) and thymidine (7) on the basis of spectroscopic data analyses. This is the first report of these compounds in a marine sponge belonging to the Niphates genus and the first evidence of the presence of 1 from a natural source.

Ichthyotoxic, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity of some sponges of the Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs

The icthyotoxic, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of aqueous, ethanol and chloroform extractsof 11 spongesfrom the Santa Marta región, Colombian Caríbbean. were assayed. All studied sponges showed antimicrobial activity; 6 were ichthyotoxic and 7 were cytotoxic. Ircinia campana, Verongula rigida, Agelas conifera and Didiscus oxeata, were found to have activity in all three kinds of tests.

Ensayos de actividad biológica y ecología química de extractos orgánicos de macroalgas del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs

This study evaluates the biological activity and possible deterrance played by organic crude extracts from six Phaeophyta and two Rhodophyta algae from Southern Caribbean. Bioessays were carried out using concentrations equivalent to those present in algae tissue. Species in general did not show high citotoxic activity. However Dictyota pulchella, showed a delay in the mitotic process for cells stage XVI. Extracts from Dictyota bartayresiana, D. pulchella, Sargassum cymosum and Cladophyllum schnetteri, inhibited S. partitus feeding under laboratory conditions. Nontheless, only extracts from D. bartayresiana and C. schnetteri showed this activity in the field.

Capacidad antimitotica de extractos de esponjas marinas del Caribe colombiano OceanDocs

La determinación de actividad antimitótica de extractos de organismos marinos genera expectativas para la obtención de sustancias con potencial anticancerígeno a partir de fuentes alternativas. Se evaluó la actividad antimitótica in vitro de extractos orgánicos crudos de 15 esponjas de la costa Caribe colombiana, en embriones del erizo de mar Lytechinus variegatus. El 80% de las especies (Spirastrella coccinea, Myrmekioderma rea, Iotrochota imminuta, Halichondria sp., Petromica ciocalyptoides, Cinachyrella kuekenthali, Biemna cribaria, Oceanapia peltata, Xestospongia proxima, Oceanapia bartschi, Polymastia tenax y Dragmacidon reticulata) mostró un nivel de actividad fuerte inhibiendo la divisiones mitóticas desde el primer estadio celular durante la...
