Estudios ecológicos en el Golfo San Jorge y adyacencias (Atlántico sudoccidental). Distribución, abundancia y variación estacional del fitoplancton en relación a factores físico-químicos y la dinámica hidrológica. OceanDocs
Akselman, R..
This study was based on four seasonal cruises during 1984 and 1985. It revealed a thermo-haline frontal system formed by the advection of the Coastal Water mass flowing in two branches, one running towards the coast and the other mid-shelf directed. The thermocline developed between late spring and autumn results in a low inorganic nutrient concentration in the upper layer. Nonetheless in winter, a vertical homogeneity and high nutrient concentration were observed. Phytoplankton development presented a typical temperate-seas annual cycle. In winter, reduced populations were dominated by diatoms. The highest biomass concentration in the cycle coincided with the spring blooming, to which Thalassio sira anguste-lineata,Alexandrium tamarense, Heterocapsa...

Floraciones algales nocivas en la bahía de Santiago de Cuba OceanDocs
Gómez, L.; Díaz, U.; Fernández, A.; Licea, Y.; Álvarez, I..
Santiago de Cuba bay is an ecosystem eutrophic and vulnerable to FANs events. This work preset the results of monitoring during three year in eight stations located in the less polluted area of the bay, leading to the determination of the possible seasonal distribution and FANs frequency. 117 Phytoplankton species were identifying, which belong to 5 divisions; 28% of these species are reported as potentially toxic and/ or noxious. This zone of the bay classifies as politrophic, heterogeneous and dynamics. It highlights the cysts presence, as well as the occurrence of unialgal "blooms" of Gymnodinium catenatum and Cochlodinium polykrikoides, indicating the presence in the ecosystem of favorable conditions to HABs occurrence with negative impact on the...

Distribución de quistes de Alexandrium catenella y otros dinoflagelados en sedimentos de la zona sur-austral de Chile OceanDocs
Lembeye, Georgina.
During the expeditions Cimar - Fiordos 2, 3 and 4 (1996, 1997 and 1999), samples of marine sediments were collected in Southern Chile, between Melinka (Lat. 43° 45' S) and Beagle Channel (Lat. 54° 56' S) to study the distribution and abundance of dinoflagellate cysts, particularly the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandriurn catenella. Samples were collected from 33 stations at depths of 1 to 15 meters. The study included photographic record and taxonomic identification of cysts to genus and, whenever possible, to species, with emphasis on the identification of cysts of A. catenella. Cysts from samples collected in cruises 3 and 4, were incubated in f/2-Se culture medium at 13 °C with controlled photoperiod (14:10, L:D), to induce germination and confirm species...
