Human identification is a major task undertaken in forensic sciences. Palato-rugoscopy is based on the principle that no two palates are the same. The study of palatine rugae and the study of fingerprints are sometimes complementary as they operate in similar methods based on same scientific basis. The study intends to describe the shape and gender distribution of the palatine rugae and their prevalence in the studied population. The study sample consisted of 84 subjects, 42 males and 42 females of Urhobo ethnic and cultural background, between 17 and 30 years old, with full complement of maxillary teeth, drawn purposively from Abraka. The prevalence of palatal rugae shapes was: line (27.2%), sinuous (21.1%), angle (18.1%), polymorphhic (15.5%), point... |

Human nose occurs in many shapes and sizes and ethnic influences may result in different appearances of the nose. The classification of nose shapes can be based on nasal indices. This study was undertaken to determine the nasal indices of the Binis, between the ages of 12 and 15 years in order to classify the nose types. The study sample consisted of 200 subjects; 100 males and 100 females who were sampled purposively, from 14 secondary schools that were randomly selected. Nasal height and nasal width were measured in mm, using digital vernier caliper (Mitutoyo, Japan). The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using descriptive statistics and independent sample t test. P 0.05 is considered statistically significant. Descriptive statistics... |

Establish a person's identity can be a very complex process, one of the main objectives of the forensic sciences. The analysis of the teeth, fingerprints and DNA comparison, are probably the most used technics, allowing fast and secure identification processes. However, these techniques can not always be applied, in some cases, it is necessary to apply different and less known techniques. In this work, a systematic analysis of the shape and dimensions of the palatal rugae was performed. We analyzed 120 subjects of both sexes, between 15 to 20 years olds, fully dentated, and by calcorrugoscopy were determined the shape, size, number and position of the palatal rugae. The most prevalent palatal rugae shape was sinuous (43%) followed by curve (27%), line... |
