Time-variations of equivalent water heights'from Grace Mission and in-situ river stages in the Amazon basin 36
Almeida,Flavio Guilherme Vaz de; Calmant,Stephane; Seyler,Frédérique; Ramillien,Guillaume; Blitzkow,Denizar; Matos,Ana Cristina Cancoro; Silva,Joecila Santos.
Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission is dedicated to measuring temporal variations of the Earth's gravity field. In this study, the Stokes coefficients made available by Groupe de Recherche en Géodésie Spatiale (GRGS) at a 10-day interval were converted into equivalent water height (EWH) for a ~4-year period in the Amazon basin (from July-2002 to May-2006). The seasonal amplitudes of EWH signal are the largest on the surface of Earth and reach ~ 1250mm at that basin's center. Error budget represents ~130 mm of EWH, including formal errors on Stokes coefficient, leakage errors (12 ~ 21 mm) and spectrum truncation (10 ~ 15 mm). Comparison between in situ river level time series measured at 233 ground-based hydrometric stations (HS) in the...

Characterisation of Sanguinhal Mire, Terceira Island (Azores): a protected quaking bog habitat 39
Mendes,Cândida; Dias,Eduardo.
The Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic is an important area for biodiversity because it is rich in rare species and habitats, and almost undisturbed. Sanguinhal mire was originally a lake that evolved through paludification into a peat habitat. It is located inside Nature 2000 (European Union for Protection of Nature and Biodiversity, Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, Habitat Directive Annex I(b) habitat 7140) area of Santa Bárbara and Pico Alto Mountains on the island of Terceira, and it is a good example of a basin peatland type that was first discovered in 1998. This paper provides baseline information on its flora, vegetation communities, structure, surface hydrology...

Discharge analysis for a system approach to river basin development with Subak irrigation schemes as a culture heritage in Bali 111
Yekti, Mawiti Infantri; Schultz, Bart; Norken, I Nyoman; Hayde, Laszlo.
Paddy terraces in Baliare important cultural landscapes.  Traditionally, the flow within a river basin has been managed using a traditional technology called Subak irrigation.  These schemes are based on the cropping patterns and indigenous water management, which are organized by the respective Subak associations.  Unfortunately, this traditional technology is facing challenges: water shortage and competition with other water users.  In order to sustain agriculture production of Subak irrigation schemes in the Yeh Ho River Basin, the available discharge in Yeh Ho River was analyzed in this study in light of the supply to the Subak irrigation schemes within the river basin.  By using the Weibull formula, the historic supply data of several diversion weirs...

Peak discharge estimation to evaluate and monitor the Gumbasa Watershed performance, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia 111
Naharuddin, Naharuddin Naharuddin; Sadeghi, Seyed Mohammad Moein; Malik, Adam; Rosyid, Abdul; Ahyauddin, Ahyauddin.
One of the appropriate strategies to evaluate watershed health is by determining peak discharge. This is associated with the influence of frequent floods and landslides on the changes in the carrying capacity of Gumbasa watershed. It was also attached to the accelerated forest and land degradation due to encroachment, especially in the upstream. This study aims to determine the estimated peak discharge of three sub-watersheds, including Lindu, Palolo, and Gumbasa to monitor and evaluate the performance of the main watershed. This was conducted using a rational method with a combined and average flow coefficient approach, while the rainfall intensity was calculated based on the longest concentration time. The results showed the flow coefficient in the...

Mayal,Elga Miranda; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Feitosa,Fernando Antônio do Nascimento; Schwamborn,Ralf; Silva,Tâmara de Almeida e; Silva-Cunha,Maria da Glória Gonçalves da.
This study provides baseline information on the hydrological conditions and on the coral and plankton communities at the Maracajaú reef ecosystem (Northeastern Brazil). Studies were performed from February to June 2000, covering the transition from dry to rainy season. In this area, there is an offshore coral reef formation, where corals were observed in loco; the water samples were collected to obtain the hydrological and plankton data. Six scleractinian species were identified. Stable isotope analysis on the carbonate fraction of Favia gravida fragments showed that these corals were under severe thermal stress. Chlorophyll-a varied from 1.1 to 9.3 mg m-3, with higher values during the rainy season. Average zooplankton wet weight biomass were 117.0...

Hydropedology 64
Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Curi,Nilton.
Pedology consists of a sub-area of Soil Science that studies the soil and its origin as well as its inter-relationship with the landscape. Hydrology is the science that studies the water in nature in its different mediums (atmosphere, soil and rock), using the watershed as a reference for analysis of the water dynamics and also its interaction with the landscape. The relationship between these two branches of knowledge has been the object of debate and analysis in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science, which seeks to integrate the respective fields of research. As such, for Hydrology, Pedology has been fundamental for enabling a foundation for the processes associated to the generation of runoff and groundwater recharge,...

Does wrong procedence assignment lead to underestimates in groundwater biodiversity? 67
Fernández,Hugo R.
Individuals of certain taxa (e.g., water mites and crustaceans) collected from streams and rivers are often assigned to a surficial benthic origin when the animals clearly display subterranean morphological characteristics. This paper addresses reasons for these errors and proposes ways to minimize such mistakes when sampling.

An Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management workshop process was used to assist Grand Canyon scientists and managers in developing conceptual and simulation models for the Colorado ecosystem affected by Glen Canyon Dam. This model examines ecosystem variables and processes at multiple scales in space and time, ranging from feet and hours for benthic algal response to diurnal flow changes, to reaches and decades for sediment storage and dynamics of long-lived native fish species. Its aim is to help screen policy options ranging from changes in hourly variation in flow allowed from Glen Canyon Dam, to major structural changes for restoration of more natural temperature regimes. It appears that we can make fairly accurate predictions about some...

Integrating local knowledge and science: economic consequences of driftwood harvest in a changing climate 7
Jones, Chas E; International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks; chas@chasjones.com; Kielland, Knut; Institute of Arctic Biology, University of Alaska Fairbanks; kkielland@alaska.edu; Hinzman, Larry D; International Arctic Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks; ldhinzman@alaska.edu; Schneider, William S; Oral History Department, University of Alaska Fairbanks; wsschneider@alaska.edu.
The integration of local knowledge and science represents an opportunity to enhance the understanding of interrelations among climate, hydrology, and socioeconomic systems while providing mutual benefits to scientists and rural communities. Insight from rural Alaskans helped to identify a social-ecological threshold used to model potential driftwood harvest from the Yukon River. Information from residents of Tanana, Alaska, was combined with scientific data to model driftwood harvest rates. Modeling results estimated that between 1980 and 2010, hydrologic factors alone were responsible for a 29% decrease in the annual wood harvest, which approximately balanced a 23% reduction in wood demand because of a decline in number of households. The...

DAILY RAINFALL DISAGGREGATION COEFFICIENTS FOR THE DOCE RIVER BASIN, BRAZIL: REGIONAL APPLICABILITY AND THE RETURN PERIOD INFLUENCE 70
Passos,Jéssica B. de M. C.; Silva,Demetrius D. da; Lima,Rafael P. C..
ABSTRACT Alternative methods to the intensity-duration-frequency equations have been used for intense rainfall study in places with no pluviographic data. A pioneering study, by CETESB (1986), established rainfall disaggregation coefficients for Brazil; however, the use of these coefficients take into account neither the rainfall characteristics of the interest locality nor the return period influence in obtaining the precipitation intensities. This study aimed to determine rainfall disaggregation coefficients for Doce river basin; to verify the validity of the regional coefficients use for the entire basin; and to evaluate the return period influence on these coefficients. Data from 19 gauges located in the basin, with rainfall associated with durations...

Analysis of the relationship intensity, duration, frequency of disaggregated daily rainfall in southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil 70
Damé,Rita de C. F.; Teixeira-Gandra,Claudia F. A.; Villela,Francisco A.; Santos,Jacira P. dos; Winkler,Antoniony S..
The intensity, duration, and frequency relationship (IDF) of rainfall occurrence may be done through continuous records of pluviographs or daily pluviometer values . The objective of this study was to estimate the intensity-duration-frequency relationships of precipitation, using the method of daily rainfall disaggregation, at weather stations located to the southern half of the state of Rio Grande do Sul; comparing them with those obtained by rain gauge records, in places considered homogeneous from the meteorological point of view. The IDF equation parameters were estimated from daily rainfall disaggregation data, using the method of nonlinear optimization. To validate the equations confidence indices and efficiency and the "t" Student test, among...

POSSIBILITIES FOR ECOHYDROLOGICAL MONITORING IN NATURAL AND MANAGED ECOSYSTEMS IN SOUTHERN CHILE 73
Peters,Jan; Wieme,Vanessa; Boeckx,Pascal; Samson,Roeland; Godoy,Roberto; Oyarzún,Carlos; Verhoest,Niko.
Ecohydrology investigates how hydrological processes affect plant growth and vice versa. As these mutual interactions are important in many ecosystems, ecohydrology has wide applicability. An important aspect of ecohydrological research is the assessment and prediction of the occurrence of plant species or vegetation types in relation to hydrological or hydrogeochemical habitat conditions. Several models have been developed (e.g. DEMNAT, ICHORS, ITORS, ITORS-VL). All of these models are data driven. Consequently a monitoring network has to be installed, possibly in addition to existing databases. These networks are ecosystem specific but the most widely monitored variables are: water table depth, electric conductivity of groundwater, soil moisture content...
