Measuring the Determinants of School Completion in Pakistan: Analysis of Censoring and Selection Bias AgEcon
Holmes, Jessica.
This paper explores the demand for child schooling in Pakistan, using the Pakistan Integrated Household Survey (1991). There have been few such studies for Pakistan, a country with relatively low enrollment rates and education levels, high illiteracy, and large disparity between male and female education. Additionally, this study focuses on two potential sources of bias in the estimation of the demand for schooling. First, studies which do not distinguish between currently enrolled children and those who have completed their schooling subject their estimates to a form of censoring bias. Second, studies which exclude children who have left the household from their samples may introduce sample selection bias if the decisions to leave home and to attend...

Cueto, Santiago; Ramirez, Cecilia; Leon, Juan; Pain, Oscar.

Cueto, Santiago; Andrade, Fernando; Leon, Juan.

Education, Reputation or Network? Evidence from Italy on Migrant Workers Employability AgEcon
Mazzanti, Massimiliano; Mancinelli, Susanna; Ponti, Giovanni; Piva, Nora.
The strong adverse selection that immigrants face in hosting labour markets may induce them to adopt some behaviours or signals to modify employers’ beliefs. Relevant mechanisms for reaching this purpose are personal reputation; exploiting ethnic networks deeply-rooted in the hosting country; and high educational levels used as an indirect signal of productivity. On this last point, the immigrant status needs a stronger signal compared to that necessary for a local worker, and this may lead the immigrant to accept job qualifications which are lower than those achievable through the embodied educational level. This could explain the over education problem that characterizes many countries, Italy included. The aim of the paper is to investigate whether the...

Students' Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness: What Surveys Tell and What They Do Not Tell AgEcon
Alauddin, Mohammad; Tisdell, Clement A..
Employing student evaluation of teaching (SET) data on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate economics courses, this paper uses ordered probit analysis to (i) investigate how student’s perceptions of ‘teaching quality’ (TEVAL) are influenced by their perceptions of their instructor’s attributes relating including presentation and explanation of lecture material, and organization of the instruction process; (ii) identify differences in the sensitivity of perceived teaching quality scores to variations in the independent variables; (iii) investigate whether systematic differences in TEVAL scores occur for different levels of courses; and (iv) examine whether the SET data can provide a useful measure of teaching quality. It reveals that student’s...

A Unified Framework for Measuring Preferences for Schools and Neighborhoods AgEcon
Bayer, Patrick; Ferreira, Fernando; McMillan, Robert.
This paper sets out a framework for estimating household preferences over a broad range of housing and neighborhood characteristics, some of which are determined by the way that households sort in the housing market. This framework brings together the treatment of heterogeneity and selection that has been the focus of the traditional discrete choice literature with a clear strategy for dealing with the correlation of unobserved neighborhood quality with both school quality and neighborhood sociodemographics. We estimate the model using rich data on a large metropolitan area, drawn from a restricted version of the Census. The estimates indicate that, on average, households are willing to pay an additional one percent in house prices - substantially lower...

Market relations in education as the factor, which has impact on the quality of human capital AgEcon
Pavlovska, Valentina.
Market relations in Latvian economy increasingly develop in the field of education. Education becomes a special product and people must know how to sell and how to buy it. Graduates’ ability to fit labour market requirements is an important indicator of education quality. Consequently, the education product should meet labour market requirements. Market research data show that employers, education institutions and students have different visions of what the labour market requirements are.

Rural Gaps in Participation in Early Childhood Education AgEcon
Temple, Judy A..
While state government spending on early education has grown in recent years, accessibility of preschool programs for rural children remains a problem. Using census-tract data from a nationally-representative data set on U.S. children, multinomial logit estimation reveals significant differences in early education experiences between rural and nonrural children. Both rural children and children of less-educated mothers are less likely to participate in preschool. This paper concludes by discussing the appropriate role of local, state, or federal governments in funding rural preschool programs. While early educational investments are being touted as effective economic development tools, the nature of the positive externalities associated with preschool...
