| Cercospora leaf spot or Cercospora spot, caused by Cercospora beticola Sacc is the most common disease in the leaf beet cultivation. This study aimed to determine the mycelial sensitivity in vitro, measured by the IC50 (concentration for 50% inhibition of mycelial fungus growth) of three isolates of C. beticola of sugarbeet leaves obtained in Guarapuava region (PR) to the fungicide copper oxychloride shield in controlling the Cercospora spot as well as the production of cercosporin. | Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a plant often employed in popular medicine. Recently several studies have alerted about the toxicity of substances present in medicinal plants, which can pose risks to the human health. In this sense, the present work aimed to investigate the phytotoxic, cytotoxic and genotoxic action of three guava varieties - Paluma, Pedro Sato and Roxa ("purple") - on the plant test system Lactuca sativa L. | This paper describes the effect of dipyridamole (DIP) on the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in HEp-2 human larynx cancer cells in vitro and the nature of the interaction between cisplatin and dipyridamole. Cytotoxic assays were performed to obtain the IC50 for cisplatin. The cells were treated with 0, 20, 40, 80, 120 or 200 µM cisplatin, with or without a single concentration of DIP and incubated for 60 min at 37ºC and 5% CO2 for 3 days and then counted with a hemocytometer. The accumulation of cisplatin in the cells was measured by atomic absorption and fluorescence was used to determine the membrane binding constant of DIP. | Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world and coffee prices are directly linked to grain quality. In this work, the antioxidant activity of coffee was related to its quality through Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy (ESR), as an attempt to establish a non-subjective method to classify the grain quality. For that purpose, the IC50 and temporal monitoring of its non-oxidized fraction were determined for three bean qualities: Soft (High), Hard (Medium) and Rio (Low).
