Bacteria of the Rickettsia genus are agents of Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF), a zoonotic disease which is difficult to diagnose, evolves quickly and can result in death. Antibodies against Rickettsia spp. in horses were studied, by means of Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFAT ≥64), in 150 blood samples taken from animals in two Santa Catarina mesoregions (Planalto Serrano and Vale do Itajaí). The overall occurrence of Rickettsia spp. antibodies in horses was 18.66%, with cross-reactivity occurring in all positive samples for at least two of the species tested. Separately, according to the species, 25 (16.66%) samples were positive for R. rickettsii, 15 (10%) for R. parkeri, 22 (14.66%) for R. amblyommii, 23 (15.33%) for R. rhipicephali, 16 (10.66%) for... |

Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are parasitic diseases of global importance. The present study had the objective to determine the influence of age, sex and breed in the prevalence of antibodies against both diseases in dogs from Brotas city, São Paulo State, Brazil. Blood samples of 342 dogs were collected, and the age, sex and breed of each animal were recorded. The serological diagnosis for toxoplasmosis and neosporosis were performed using the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). The Fischer's test was used to calculate the association probability of the variables, with a = 5%. For toxoplasmosis the prevalence of antibodies was 26.9% (CI 95% 22.4-31.8%), and for neosporosis 4.97% (CI 95% 3.1-7.8%). The statistical analysis revealed a higher risk of... |

The aim of the present study was to compare the direct detection methods of Ehrlichia canis (blood smears and nested PCR), serological tests (Dot-ELISA and Immunofluorescent Antibody Test - IFAT), and demonstrate the most suitable test for the diagnosis of different stages of infection. Blood samples and clinical data were collected from 30 dogs examined at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The clinical signs most frequently observed were apathy, anorexia, pale mucous membrane, fever, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hemorrhages and uveitis. Evaluating the humoral immune response, 63.3% of the sera were IFAT positive, while 70% were Dot-ELISA positive. By nestedPCR 53.3% of the samples were positive. Comparing these techniques... |

ABSTRACT: The presence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in beef cattle slaughtered in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, was evaluated. A total of 401 blood samples were collected; 281 samples from the municipality of Rolândia and 120 from the municipality of Borrazópolis, between April 2015 and November 2016. Of the total samples, 289 were from females and 112 from males, aged one and a half to eight years. Indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was performed, using a cut-off of 1:100. Variables were tabulated for statistical analyses (Fisher’s exact test and chi-square tests, p≤0.05). The analysis showed that of the 401 samples, 37 were positive for N. caninum, indicating a prevalence of 9.2 %, and observed titers were 1:100 (16),... |

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on the recombinant p23 of Cryptosporidium parvum was established for the detection of antibodies against C. parvum in cattle. The sensitivity and specificity of the ELISA were evaluated with the standard indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) using sporozoites as antigens. Of 77 bovine sera collected from China, 20 (26.0%) were identified as positive by the IFAT. The same samples were tested with the ELISA. The optical densities at 415 nm were compared to the IFAT results and statistically analyzed to designate a provisional cut-off point. As a result, the cut-off point was concluded to be 0.08, which was considered to be the best condition in the light of its sensitivity (80%) and specificity (73.7%).... |

A set of primers were designed according to the published sequence of the gene encoding a rhoptry protein of Babesia caballi, and used to amplify parasite DNA from the blood samples obtained from carrier horses by polymerase chain reaction(PCR)method. The PCR method was sensitive enough to detect parasite DNA from 2.5 μl blood sample with a parasitemia of 0.000001%. The PCR method was compared with fluorescent antibody test(IFAT) in order to evaluate the diagnosis effciency for B. caball infection in horses. Of 142 field samples from Mongolia, 28(20%) and 96(69%)samples were identified positively by PCR and IFAT, respectively. Although the sensitivity of PCR was lower than IFAT, it was noted that the 5 IFAT-negative samples were PCR-positive, suggesting... |

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle from the Northern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. Serum samples were collected from 1789 animals and tested by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall prevalence of T. gondii was 83.40% (1492/1789). The prevalence rates of T. gondii-seropositive animals observed in the states of Pará, Tocantins and, Mato Grosso were 87.45%, 87.79% and 73.06%, respectively. The detection of high prevalence rates of T. gondii in cattle deserves special attention because they are the main source of high biological value protein for humans. This finding indicates the need for further studies on the risk that these animals may pose to public health. |
