In the IODP 372A proposal, working hypotheses used with respect to actively deforming gas hydrate‐bearing landslides were based on an initial calculation considering gas hydrate to occur in fresh water. This initial inaccuracy leads to predict the base of methane hydrate stability zone (MHSZ) to be at around 162 meters below the seafloor (mbsf) at site U1517 while it is expected to be between 85 and 128 mbsf. It is most interesting that important negative chloride anomalies were measured well below the theoretical MHSZ without direct evidence of the presence of gas hydrate. The Quaternary hemipelagic sediments of the Japan Sea are characterized by centimeter-to decimeter-scale alternation of dark and light clay to silty clay, which are bio-siliceous and/or bio-calcareous to a various degree. Each of the dark and light layers are considered as deposited synchronously throughout the deeper (> 500 m) part of the sea. However, attempts for correlation and age estimation of individual layers are limited to the upper few tens of meters. In addition, the exact timing of the depositional onset of these dark and light layers and its synchronicity throughout the deeper part of the sea have not been explored previously, although the onset timing was roughly estimated as similar to 1.5 Ma based on the result of Ocean Drilling Program...

A complete structural model and kinematic history for distributed deformation in the Wharton Basin ArchiMer

The equatorial eastern Indian Ocean hosts a diffuse plate boundary, where widespread deformation accommodates the relative motion between the Indian, Australian and Capricorn sub-plates. We integrate IODP Expedition 362 borehole data, which for the first time provides an accurate, ground-truthed chronostratigraphy of the sedimentary sequence east of the Ninety East Ridge (NER), with 2D seismic reflection profiles and multibeam bathymetry to assess the styles of faulting between the NER and the Sunda subduction zone, timing of activity and comparison with physical and rheological properties.
