An updated checklist of the marine fish fauna of Reunion Island, South-Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Letourneur, Yves; Chabanet, Pascale; Durville, Patrick; Taquet, Marc; Teissier, Emmanuel; Parmentier, Maurice; Quero, Jean-claude; Pothin, Karine.
The ichthyofauna of Reunion Island, Southwestern Indian Ocean, was sampled during several ecological and artisanal fisheries studies. Information from these investigations and from other sources were included to compile the present checklist of the marine fishes of the island. A total of 885 species belonging to 150 families was recorded. Nine species are known only from Reunion, indicating endemism of about 1.0%. The most speciose families (Labridae, Gobiidae, Serranidae, and Pomacentridae) were also among the most speciose at the neighbouring Mauritius Island (except gobiids), and, generally, on other islands in the Indian Ocean area (Maldives, Chagos, Madagascar and Christmas Island). The Gobiidae only represented 5.4% of the ichthyofauna, which was...

La ciguatera dans l'Ocean Indien: etude des poissons veneneux des bancs de l'Archipel des Mascareignes et de la crete centrale de l'Ocean Indien ArchiMer
Lebeau, Alain.
In this paper, the authors present a general table of the present extension of ciguatoxism in the Mascarene Islands. A statistically significant relation exists between the variations of poisonous fish proportions and the periods of tropical cyclones in this fishing area. The tests showed that the ciguatera known from Mauritius, Rodriguez, Chagos and Saya-de-Malha Islands, is also present in the Amirantes Islands. The coastal ichtyosarcotoxism of the Reunion was also studied; this phenomenon does not constitute an obstacle to the activity of the artisanal fishery.

Quero, Jean-claude; Spitz, Jerome; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007 at Reunion Island, 12 specimens of the pomacentrid genus Chromis were collected at sea surface. One of these fishes was a C. chrysura known from the reef Island fauna. The others have enlarged eyes. Among them were one C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), new for the Island fauna, and ten specimens of a new Chromis species, described here under the name C. durvillei. This new species of deep dwelling Chromis is distinguishable by large sized eyes 1.9 to 2.4 in the head length, D. XIII, 12-13, 25 to 26 gill-rakers on the first gill arch, three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, without black or dark brown spot or band on the body, pectorals or caudal peduncle. Respiration, mineral excretion and digestive enzymatic activity of copepods from Indian Ocean, in relation with nutritional strategy ArchiMer
Gaudy, R; Boucher, Jean.
Respiration, mineral excretion (nitrogen and phosphorus) and specific activity of amylase and trypsin were studied with several species of copepods from an oceanic tropical area of the Indian Ocean. O/N ratios were significantly different in some species or some groups of species. There was a direct relationship between these values and the ratio of specific activities of amylase and trypsin (A/T). Scolecithrix danae was maintained during 2 or 3 days under different food regime conditions (starvation, algae or mixed food). Its O/N ratio showed steady values but its O/P ratio increased with algal food or during starvation. The trypsin activity was activated only when animal material was present in the diet. These results are discussed according to the...

Indirect gradient analysis of the mangal formation of Gazi Bay (Kenya) OMA
Beeckman, H.; Gallin, E.; Coppejans, E..
(1) Based on vegetation relevés of sample units along transects perpendicular to the coastline, the mangal ecosystem of Gazi Bay (Kenya) has been investigated.(2) An indirect gradient analysis is performed by the ordination method Detrended Correspondence Analysis.(3) The first ordination axis can be interpreted in terms of resistance of the different species to flooding.(4) A similar zonation pattern is found as described by Walter & Steiner (1936).(5) Zonation is closely connected with morphological and ecophysiological features of the mangrove species. Therefore stomatal density has been measured. Sonneratia has by far the lowest stomatal density, Lumnitzera the highest.
