New evidence for the involvement of Paracartia grani (Copepoda, Calanoida) in the life cycle of Marteilia refringens (Paramyxea) ArchiMer
Boyer, S.; Chollet, Bruno; Bonnet, D.; Arzul, Isabelle.
The dynamics of the protozoan parasite Marteilia refringens was studied in Thau lagoon, an important French shellfish site, for 1 year in three potential hosts: the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mytiliidae) the grooved carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus (Veneriidae) and the copepod Paracartia grani (Acartiidae). Parasite DNA was detected by PCR in R. decussatus. In situ hybridisation showed necrotic cells of M. refringens in the digestive epithelia of some R. decussatus suggesting the non-involvement of this species in the parasite life cycle. In contrast, the detection of M. refringens in mussels using PCR appeared bimodal with two peaks in spring and autumn. Histological observations of PCR-positive mussels revealed the presence of...

Herpesvirus infection in European flat oysters Ostrea edulis obtained from brood stocks of various geographic origins and grown in Galicia (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Da Silva, P; Renault, Tristan; Fuentes, J; Villalba, A.
We evaluated differences in productive traits and disease susceptibility among Ostrea edulis stocks. We produced 4 to 5 families from each of 4 oyster populations (Irish, Greek and 2 Galician) in a hatchery. Spat corresponding to 19 different families were transferred to a raft in the Ria de Arousa (Galicia, Spain) for grow-out. Samples of each family were histologically processed every month for 2 yr. One of the pathological conditions disclosed by histological examination was characterised by the occurrence of numerous abnormal cells throughout the connective tissue of various organs, showing hypertrophied nuclei with marginated chromatin and a characteristic large intranuclear acidophilic inclusion. Ultrastructural examination showed that the abnormal...

False positive reaction due to endogenous biotin activity in glandular epithelium of decidua BJM
Spano,Liliana Cruz; Vargas,Paulo Roberto Merçon de; Leite,José Paulo Gagliardi; Nascimento,Jussara Pereira do.
Biotin-labeled probe was used in an in situ hybridisation assay to localize virus infection in formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissues taken from eleven abortion cases. Probes for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human Parvovirus B19 (B19) and human adenovirus type 2 (HAd2), were labeled with biotin-11-dUTP by nick-translation reaction. Streptavidin-alkaline-phosphatase (SAP) was used to detect biotin, followed by 4-nitroblue tetrazolium/5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl phosphate (NBT/BCIP) solution. Positive reaction was observed in nucleus of glandular ephitelium cells of decidua either in positive or in negative control at first and second gestational trimester. The reaction was not inhibited with blocking solution for alkaline phosphatase endogenous activity...
