Factors affecting profitability of organic farms (OF0155) Organic Eprints
Institute of Rural Sciences,.
Financial Factors The importance of price premiums for profitability has been clearly established for cropping farms. The lack of availability of price premiums for livestock products means that the importance of price premiums in livestock systems to overall financial success has not been established. There is some indication that the success of organic farms is likely to depend on the successful management of internal resources; the diversity of the farming business might aid this, but no studies have established any clear indicators or relationships. The total variable costs might give some indication and would be expected to be low where the internal utilisation of non-marketable goods, such as fertility, nutrients and forage, is efficient....

Can parasitic gastro-enteritis be used as an indicator of welfare in organic sheep? Organic Eprints
Gray, Douglas.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Organic livestock standards are designed to deliver good animal welfare but without an objective means of assessing welfare, it is difficult to know if they succeed. Existing assessment systems largely assess environmental requirements, rather than looking at animal behaviour or health. Parasitic gastro-enteritis (PGE) is recognised as being one of the most difficult diseases to prevent in organic livestock production. Monitoring systems for PGE can be used by organic farmers in their decision-making and could be one aspect of assessing animal welfare, particularly in relation to sheep. Results are presented of studies on an experimental organic beef/sheep farm and on commercial organic...

Evaluation des Bereichs Forschung und Entwicklung im Bundesprogramm Ökologischer Landbau Organic Eprints
Ekert, Stefan; Döring, Thomas; Häring, A. M.; Lampkin, Nicolas; Murphy-Bokern, Donal; Otto, Kristin; Padel, Susanne; Vieweger, Anja.
In 2010, the BLE commissioned an evaluation of the Federal Organic Farming Scheme (BÖL), running since 2001. This paper reports on the approach taken in the evaluation of its research component, selected findings, and recommendations. An impact model of the BÖL scheme was developed to analyse how the various measures could contribute to the scheme’s overall aims and objectives. Data from the BLE research project database were analysed to assess the distribution of resources over time by topic and by research provider. At project level, a random selection of 83 projects was reviewed by external experts, including both scientists and other stakeholders to assess their quality and relevance. An online survey of 104 project leaders and interviews with 30...

Real-time PCR to quantify composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities - marker design, verification, calibration and field validation Organic Eprints
Thonar, C.; Erb, A.; Jansa, J..
Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) is slowly becoming established as a tool to quantify abundance of different arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) taxa in roots and in soil. Here, we describe the development and field validation of qPCR markers (i.e. primers with associated hydrolysis probes), targeting taxon-specific motifs in the nuclear large ribosomal subunit RNA genes. Design of such markers is complicated by the multinuclear and multigenomic cellular organization of these fungi and the high DNA sequence diversity within the smallest biologically relevant units (i.e. single-spore isolates). These limitations are further compounded by inefficient biomass production of these fungi, resulting in limited availability of pure genomic DNA (gDNA) of...

The use of the Nominal Group Technique for eliciting opinion for policy evaluation Organic Eprints
Jeffreys, Mr Ian.
Nominal Group Technique (NGT) is a structured process for gathering knowledge from groups. The NGT has proven particularly effective and efficient for assessments of organic farming and other agri-environmental policies. These assessments typically consider impacts on a wide range of often conflicting objectives including economic, social and environmental objectives; often in situations were an incomplete knowledge base prevents an evidence–based assessment. The NGT process acquires knowledge in a manner that enhances group dynam-ics and limits the effect of dominant individuals. This paper presents an application of the NGT for assess-ing organic farming support schemes in Wales. This application was im-plemented using a computer-based Group...

Review of perspectives applied in the assessment of organic food networks Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Value is a key concept for understanding how organic food networks function because values are the foundation of the organic production practice, thus value must be given a significant role in assessing and balancing the effects of organic food networks. At the same time value is a loose concept, widely used and with various meanings in different scientific perspectives, in which ontological difference produces different perceptions of what values are. Assessing organic food networks is thus a complicated process, since the perspective which is chosen has important implications for the analysis and for the outcome of the assessment. This paper reviews five perspectives which predominate in the assessment of food networks, 1) Food Science, 2) Discourse...

Further Development of Methodologies for Sustainability Assessment and Monitoring in Organic/Ecological Agriculture Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Pearce, Bruce.
In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in assessing the sustainability of agriculture in terms of its social, environmental and economic impact and a number of indicators and tools are used. Measurements take place at the farm or product level and indicators can be outcome related e.g. number of butterfly species present, or management related e.g. percentage of fields with margins growing wildflowers to attract butterflies. Given its underlying ethos, the organic/ecological agriculture sector should aim to be at the forefront of sustainability. The development of assessment approaches and recent discussions within the movement have identified continuous improvement towards best practice in sustainability to be one of the important...

More inter- and transdisciplinary research needed in agroecology Organic Eprints
Biber-Freudenberger, Lisa; Denich, Manfred; Whitney, Cory W..
Agroecology embraces a collection of different disciplinary fields, ranging from agriculture and ecology to political theory. A stronger recognition of agroecology in agricultural research, which often has a strong production focus, could help to achieve sustainable development if more holistic and transdisciplinary research approaches are adopted.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions of organic and conventional dairy farms in Germany Organic Eprints
Frank, Helmut; Schmid, Harald; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
The article presents a model to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of German dairy farms. The model was tested in 12 organic and 12 conventional farms in Southern and Western Germany. The results show that there is no significant difference between the greenhouse gas emissions per kg milk of the organic and the conventional farms. The lower milk yield of the organic farms is compensated by the lower fossil energy input and the higher carbon sequestration in the fodder production. It can also be seen that a raise of the milk yield from a medium level does not lead to a mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions per kg milk.

Meaningfulness of design criteria in relation to claw disorder and mortality of fattening bulls Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert; Rubelowsky, Ina.
To prove the meaningfulness of design criteria in relation to claw disorder and mortality of fattening bulls a cohort analysis was carried out on 50 farms with housing systems characterised by fully slatted floor, deep litter or litter+concrete floor. Hoofs of the bulls were collected after slaughtering and examined for pathological findings. Space allowance, feeding space, pen depth and quality of the floor were integrated into a TGI-40 protocol and related to the incidence of early losses. Slatted floor pens were characterised by a low space allowance and a low pen depth. In contrast, dimensions of pens with deep litter and litter+concrete floor were clearly larger but showed a wide and overlapping variation in the different design criteria. Hoofs on...

An integrated methodology for the evaluation of organic farming support scheme environ-mental effects supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Organic Eprints
Cembalo, Dr. Luigi; Tagliafierro, Dr. Carolina.
Within the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) framework, Member States are obliged to evaluate their respective Rural Development Plans (RDPs). The aim of the evaluation is to verify the efficiency and efficacy of the implementation process, particularly as concerns the objective of integration of environmental issues in the agricultural policy. In this context, a more comprehensive evaluation methodol-ogy is needed. Particularly, the spatial structure of the territory the intervention targets must be inte-grated in the analysis. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been widely considered a useful tool to encompass the spatial aspects in the evaluation process. GIS, in fact, are able to perform spatial analysis as well as estimate quantitative...

Vergleich zweier Humusbilanzmethoden in der praktischen Anwendung Organic Eprints
Sommer , Hendrik; Leithold, Günter.
Humus balance methods are used to estimate the humus situation on arable land of a farm. Guarantee for a stable yield is a sufficient supply of humus. There for it is necessary to use the appropriate balance method. The humus balance method from Leithold has been compared with the one that is described at Hülsbergen (2002) by using the Software Model REPRO. The humus balances of the investigated farm increased continuous throughout the study period. Based on the entire study period the humus supply increased 4 percentage points per year from 70% to 125%. The results of this study leads to the conclusion that improving the humus supply primarily resulted in the increase of livestock. The intensification of milk production has improved the supply of humus....

Shared protocols and data template in agronomic trials Organic Eprints
Cammarano, Davide; Martre, Pierre; Drexler, Dora; Draye, Xavier; Sessitsch, Angela; Pecchioni, Nicola; Cooper, Julia; Willer, Helga; Voicu, Adriana; Hinsinger, Philippe.
Due to the overlap of many disciplines and the availability of novel technologies, modern agriculture has become a wide, interdisciplinary endeavor, especially in Precision Agriculture. The adoption of a standard format for reporting field experiments can help researchers to focus on the data rather than on re-formatting and understanding the structure of the data. This paper describes how a European consortium plans to: i) create a “handbook” of protocols for reporting definitions, methodologies and parameters measured/calculated; and ii) how a data-template for field data was created and will be linked to the “handbook”. The overall goal of the EU-funded project Solutions for Solutions for improving Agroecosystem and Crop Efficiency for water and...
