Biodegradation of deproteinized potato wastewater and glycerol during cultivation of Rhodotorula glutinis yeast Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Kot,Anna Maria; Blazejak,Stanislaw; Kurcz,Agnieszka; Gientka,Iwona.
Background Deproteinized potato wastewater and glycerol are two by-products which are difficult to dispose. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of Rhodotorula glutinis to use glycerol and nitrogen compounds present in deproteinized potato wastewater and to evaluate the ability of simultaneous biodegradation of potato wastewater and glycerol via microbiological methods. Results It has been found that R. glutinis used glycerol and potato wastewater as a source of carbon and nitrogen, respectively. The highest degree of glycerol content (70.6%) reduction was found after cultivation of the investigated strain using a medium with 5% glycerol. In this medium, a significant reduction in the total protein content, estimated at 61%, was...

Extractants to assess zinc phytoavailability in mineral fertilizer and industrial by-products Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Souza,Camila Prado Cenciani de; Abreu,Cleide Aparecida de; Andrade,Cristiano Alberto de; Abreu,Mônica Ferreira de.
Efficient analytical methods for the quantification of plant-available Zn contained in mineral fertilizers and industrial by-products are fundamental for the control and marketing of these inputs. In this sense, there are some doubts on the part of the scientific community as well as of the fertilizer production sector, whether the extractor requested by the government (Normative Instruction No. 28, called 2nd extractor), which is citric acid 2 % (2 % CA) (Brasil, 2007b), is effective in predicting the plant availability of Zn via mineral fertilizers and about the agronomic significance of the required minimal solubility of 60 % compared to the total content (HCl) (Brasil, 2007a). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alternative extractors DTPA,...

Teles,Mariele Cristina; Pereira,Bárbara Azevedo; Rabelo,Stênia Severo; Pontelo,Thais Preisser; Chaves,Bruna Resende; Ferreira,Rony Antonio; Rodríguez-Gil,Joan Enric; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto.
ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the influence of coffee husks as floor covering on the aspects of animal welfare such as behavioral characteristics, body surface temperature, and salivary cortisol levels of stabled boars. Sixteen boars were housed in individual stalls; eight were maintained in a conventional system with a concrete floor and eight were maintained on a concrete floor lined with coffee husks. The experimental period was 60 days. All animals were filmed two days prior to the start of the experiment, on both the 7th and 60th days after exposure to coffee husks, and finally two days after the removal of the material. During this period, the number of times that the animals ate, drank, stood, sat, lay down, and dug was recorded....

Soil microbial biomass after two years of the consecutive application of composted tannery sludge doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.17160 Agronomy
Gonçalves, Iuna Carmo Ribeiro; Universidade Federal do Piauí; Araújo, Ademir Sérgio Ferreira de; Universidade Federal do Piauí; Leal, Luis Alfredo Pinheiro; Universidade Federal do Piauí; Melo, Wanderley José de; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho".
Because the agricultural use of tannery sludge may cause increased risks to soils, composting is recognized as one of the most suitable alternative for tannery sludge recycling. Experiments were conducted under field conditions to evaluate the effects of composted tannery sludge (CTS) on the soil microbial biomass and trace elements after two years of consecutive applications. The following five treatments were used: 0 (without CTS application), 5, 10, 20 and 40 ton ha-1 of CTS (dry basis). Soil samples were collected at 60 days after the CTS application at 0-20 cm depth. The CTS application promoted changes in the soil microbial biomass C (SMB-C) and N (SMB-N). In the first year, significant increases in the SMB-C and SMB-N were observed with the...

Nodulation, nitrogen uptake and growth of lima bean in a composted tannery sludge-treated soil Ciência Rural
Rocha,Sandra Mara Barbosa; Antunes,Jadson Emanuel Lopes; Silva,Antonio Victor Cavalcante Rocha; Oliveira,Louise Melo de Souza; Aquino,João Pedro Alves de; Melo,Wanderley Jose de; Figueiredo,Marcia do Vale Barreto; Araujo,Ademir Sérgio Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the responses of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) to application of composted tannery sludge on nodulation, N uptake and plant growth. For eight years, the compost was applied at rates of: 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 (dry basis). Plants of lima bean showed higher nodulation in treatments with compost; however, nodules reported in these treatments presented lower biomass, size and diversity than those reported in treatment without compost. Accumulation of N increased with the application of the highest rate (20 Mg ha-1), while there was an increase in chromium content in shoot with the increase in compost rates. Thus, the use of composted tannery sludge, in long-term, increases the accumulation of chromium in plants,...
