Information networks and power: confronting the "wicked problem" of REDD+ in Indonesia Ecology and Society

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a priority issue for forest and climate policy in Indonesia, and REDD+ policy-making activity has been characterized by considerable public consultation. Despite this engagement, discussions on REDD+ in Indonesia are reported to have remained top-down, a disconcerting pattern when adaptive governance and transformational change require cross-scale and cross-sectoral communication. Explicitly modeling the patterns of information exchange related to REDD+ can clarify these claims and help identify potential barriers to the transformational change needed to implement REDD+. We used data obtained through semistructured and structured interviews held in 2011 with representatives from a...

Volume 2, U-Information networking: the development of national or regional scientific information exchange OceanDocs
In this manual a complete overview is provided of the procedures to develop national or regional information exchange networks within a developing country framework. Attention is given to types of information which need to be exchanged, identification of network components, the network structure, the role and responsibilities of a dispatch centre and its staff. As an example of an operational network an extensive description is given of the RECOSCIX-WIO project including its history, services and products.

Networking in Meat Production Systems: The Influence of Cooperative Structures on Farmers’ Participation AgEcon
Deimel, Mark; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Against the background of increasing competitive pressures and growing requirements with regard to food quality and safety, the significance of network-wide collaboration in food production has been pointed out in recent years. With this in mind, it is the objective of this paper to analyse pig farmers’ network participation in general and to explore whether cooperative structures in food supply chains influence the type as well as the quality of farmers’ network relations. Our results show that cooperative structures influence pig fattening farmers’ network participation concerning relationship quality with slaughterhouses as well as farmers’ choice of network partners for information exchange and consultancy. Furthermore, the results show that farmers...

Regional networking as a competitive advantage? Empirical results from German pig production AgEcon
Deimel, Mark; Plumeyer, Cord-Herwig; Theuvsen, Ludwig; Ebbeskotte, Christof.
It is often hypothesized that geographical proximity in clusters (or industry districts) has positive effects on access to information and knowledge and on firm competitiveness. We present one of the first empirical tests of this hypothesis in the context of the European agribusiness sector. A large-scale empirical study was conducted in the northwestern part of Germany, which is one of Europe’s leading pig production regions. The results of the farmer survey show that the cluster in north-western Germany provides good structural preconditions for the comprehensive network participation of pig farmers. Additional analyses show that farmers’ network participation has positive effects on access to information, their perceived level of informedness and the...

Gender, Social Capital and Information Exchange in Rural Uganda AgEcon
Katungi, Enid; Smale, Melinda.
Changing agricultural research and extension systems mean that informal mechanisms of information diffusion are often the primary source of information about improved seed and practices for farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper investigates the interactions between gender, social capital and information exchange in rural Uganda. Within the framework of farmer-to-farmer models, we conceptualize the informal information diffusion process to comprise social capital accumulation and information exchange. We assume that each agent participates in information exchange with a fixed (predetermined) level of social capital and examine how endowments of social capital influence information exchange, paying close attention to gender differences. A multinomial...

Transparency in the Pork Supply Chain: Comparing China and The Netherlands AgEcon
Osinga, Sjoukje A.; Hofstede, Gert Jan.
We present a research plan to assess the value of transparency by comparing pork supply chains in The Netherlands and China. We assume that chain performance depends on chain configuration, which depends on societal context and its associated quality control institutions. We define chain configuration in terms of structure and transparency. In order to be able to assess the influence of societal context and its quality control institutions on chain configuration and performance, we compare two countries that have very different societies. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to indicate whether a certain chain configuration suits all, or whether chain configuration should be tailored to societal context.

Inter-firm coordination in the mexican avocado (Persea americana) industry: the packer-buyer relationship Agrociencia
Arana-Coronado,Jose J.; Bijman,Jos; Omta,Onno; Oude-Lansink,Alfons.
Vertical coordination is an effective response to uncertainties in marketing environments. This article presents evidence relating the influence of transaction characteristics on inter-firm coordination to respond what conditions determine the level of inter-firm coordination between packers and buyers. Based on transaction cost analysis, we measured inter-firm coordination using two variables, information exchange and duration of the arrangement with the buyer. Data were gathered from 44 non-forwardly integrated packers participating in the Mexican avocado (Persea americana) industry. We showed that higher levels of inter-firm coordination not only require coordinated response, but also cooperative response. Although information exchange is contingent on...
