Ecosystème estuarien et système économique régional : faisabilité d’une intégration par modélisation Input-Output. Application au cas de l'habitat halieutique dans l’estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Cordier, Mateo.
Mateo Cordier’s PhD addresses the interactions between the economic system and the ecosystem of the Seine estuary, an ecosystem deeply modified by human activities. His work aims at a holistic perspective and targets, among others, the destruction of nursery habitats and the subsequent impact on fish stocks in the Seine estuary. The hybrid input-output model developed in the PhD manuscript brings a quantitative insight on stakeholders and natural resources impacted by the modifications of ecosystem services (modifications caused by economic activities, political measures or restoration programs).

Quantification of interdependencies between economic systems and ecosystem services: An input-output model applied to the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Cordier, Mateo; Perez Agundez, José A.; O'Connor, Martin; Rochette, Sebastien; Hecq, Walter.
The aim of this paper is to assess the possible contribution of an input-output model towards two of the basic principles of the sustainability strategy of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and Post-Normal Science. According to these principles, decision-support tools should offer a holistic perspective and handle high uncertainty. The difficulties in reaching sustainability are due partly to the prevailing use of "narrow-system-boundary" tools that are non-holistic. Consequently, they fail to capture important ecosystem services and ignore interdependencies between them. To comply with the basic principles, our method allows environmental assets to be evaluated in multiple units and integrates results from recent researches in natural sciences....

A inserção do setor siderúrgico na economia capixaba: uma análise de insumo-produto AgEcon
Setto, Giani Claudia; Brasil, Gutemberg H.; Vieira, Wilson da Cruz.
The aim of this paper was to analyze the relative importance of the steel industry to the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The 1990 and 1999 Brazilian input-output matrices and Brazil’s regional accounts - state of Espírito Santo were used to build input-output matrices (1990 and 1999) to this state. Increases in final demand were simulated to analyze the effects on the production of each sector as well as on employment creation in this state. Backward and forward linkage indexes were also computed to twelve sectors with the same purpose. The results show that the steel industry is very important to the capixaba economy especially due to the high multiplier effects in response to increases in final demand. The results show also that the relative importance...

Modelling Policies for Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development in a Remote EU Region (Caithness & Sutherland, Scotland, UK) AgEcon
Bergmann, Holger; Thomson, Kenneth J..
A modified version of a system dynamics model constructed for an EU-wide case-study project (TOPMARD) using STELLA software was used to simulate the effects of a number of development scenarios for a remote rural area in Northern Scotland, i.e. Caithness & Sutherland, which is characterised by multifunctional agriculture. In this paper, the context of the modelling work in policy and socioeconomic terms is first described. This is followed by the specification of the model and of the modelling scenarios, one of which relates to the “decommissioning” (run-down) of a major industrial site (Dounreay) within the area. The modelling results are discussed, in terms of regional population, land use, economic and other terms, from 2001 to 2015/2031. Finally,...

The Environmental Impacts of Trade Liberalization: A Quantitative Analysis for the United States Using TEAM AgEcon
Creason, Jared R.; Fisher, Michael; Semenova, Svetlana; Stone, Susan F..
A highly disaggregated emissions factor model is presented. The model generates changes in emissions and resource use by state and 6-digit NAICS sector. Removal of all U.S. import restrictions is examined. Results for agriculture show that composition effects explain highly varied regional patterns of emission changes. Scale effects are also important for expanding sectors. Quantitative assessments such as this may prove useful in conducting full environmental reviews of U.S. trade agreements consistent with Executive Order 13141 and the Free Trade Act of 2002.

Brazilian Agricultural Credit Interest Rate Equalization Policy: A Growth Subsidy? AgEcon
Castro, Eduardo Rodrigues de; Teixeira, Erly Cardoso.
The Brazilian Interest Rate Equalization System (IRES) subsidizes farmers by providing them with credit at lower than market interest rates. The objective of this research is to evaluate the IRES by comparing its monetary cost with its benefits as measured by Brazilian GDP growth. Estimates are carried out using input-output matrix. The results suggest that each Brazilian real spent by IRES to assist Brazilian family farms increases Brazilian GDP by R$ 1.75 and that each real spent to assist commercial farms increases GDP by R$ 3.57. The IRES is a subsidy that generates economic growth greater than its cost to society.

IMPLAN UNDERSTATES AGRICULTURAL INPUT-OUTPUT MULTIPLIERS: AN APPLICATION TO POTENTIAL AGRICULTURAL/GREEN INDUSTRY DROUGHT IMPACTS IN COLORADO AgEcon
McKean, John R.; Spencer, William P..
Synthesized input-output models are widely used by industry and government economists. The IMPLAN program is popular because it provides user access to the base data so that modifications can be made. The Washington survey-based model and IMPLAN for Washington State are compared, and differences in multipliers are traced to differences in final payments leakages. An adjustment technique for IMPLAN is demonstrated. An application is made to a Colorado potential drought impact analysis. More than 51,000 part- and full-time jobs and $1.6 billion of household income are at stake in the Colorado farm and "green industry" sectors.

OUTPUT CHANGE IN U.S. AGRICULTURE: AN INPUT-OUTPUT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Holland, David W.; Martin, R.P..
This paper analyzes output changes in the U.S. agricultural economy from 1972 to 1977 using a 477-sector input-output framework. The empirical model is based on benchmark input-output data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic analysis for 1972 and 1977. Output changes were decomposed into components attributable to technical change, domestic final demand change, export demand change and import substitution. A major advantage of the decomposition is its ability to identify the output change in a given sector due to general equilibrium effects in all sectors.

CONTRIBUIÇÃO DO SETOR DE TRANSPORTE NA ECONOMIA BRASILEIRA: UMA ABORDAGEM INSUMO-PRODUTO AgEcon

MIGRANT FARM WORKERS ON VIRGINIA'S EASTERN SHORE: AN ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC IMPACTS AgEcon
Sills, Erin O.; Alwang, Jeffrey Roger; Driscoll, Paul J..
The economic impact of migrant farmworkers on an agriculture-dependent region is investigated. The direct effects of inflows of state and federal dollars for migrant services, and production of high-valued commodities are computed. Indirect and induced effects are modelled through the use of the IMPLAN input output model. Various alternatives to migrant labor are investigated, including production of less labor-intensive crops, acreage retirement, and contract H2A workers. Migrants are found to create substantial economic activity on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Relações sinérgicas e efeitos sobre a produção setorial no sistema inter-regional Paraná-Restante do Brasil AgEcon
Rodrigues, Rossana Lott; Moretto, Antonio Carlos; Sesso Filho, Umberto Antonio; Kureski, Ricardo.
The present article has as objective to calculate and to analyze the level of the synergic interactions and the overflow of the multiplying effect of the sectorial production between Parana and the Rest of Brazil (Brazil except Parana), using interregional systems of input-output estimated for the years of 1995 and 2000. The main results showed that: a) the dependence of the production of Parana in relation to the flow of trade with the Rest of Brazil raised from 25% in 1995 to 33% in 2000; b) only 1.36% of the production of the Rest of Brazil depended on the flow of input (goods and services) between this and Parana in 1995, reducing this dependence to 0,56% in 2000; c) the overflowing average of the multiplier effect of the production of the sectors of...

Who Replaces Agriculture's Contribution to Settlement in Lagging Rural Areas? An Integrated Input-Output and Dynamic Simulation Analysis AgEcon
Kopainsky, Birgit; Buser, Benjamin; Rieder, Peter.
This paper develops an integrated model for analysing regional economic development and structural change in agriculture. The input-output method allows the detailed description of a regional economy. Based on this description, regional growth pole sectors can be identified that are potential leverage points for growth oriented development strategies. Dynamic simulation tests the long term effects of such a development strategy. Model results show that external demand is the main driving force behind regional economic growth. However, development strategies for lagging rural areas have to be coupled to development strategies for regional centres. Only if the rural areas surrounding regional centres become an important asset for the development of these...

EVALUATING THE SHORT- AND LONG-RUN ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF THE VIRGINIA-MARYLAND REGIONAL COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AgEcon
Liu, Binzhang; Kshirsagar, Shukla; Johnson, Thomas G.; Thatcher, Craig D.; Norton, George W..
Colleges of veterinary medicine are often asked to provide evidence of the economic impacts of their activities. This paper presents methods for evaluating a veterinary college and applies them to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. It assesses short-run impacts on income and employment using input-output analysis. Long-run benefits are estimated using a combination of economic surplus analysis, travel cost analysis and demand estimation, animal-owner willingness-to-pay based on a survey of practicing veterinarians, and earnings differentials.

Estrutura produtiva e indústria alimentar no Paraná, de 1980 a 1995 AgEcon
Rodrigues, Rossana Lott; Moretto, Antonio Carlos; Guilhoto, Joaquim Jose Martins.
The article had as objective to evaluate the evolution of the productive structure and identify the key sectors of Parana in the years of 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995, highlighting the food processing sectors, using estimated input-output matrices. The results showed that the sectors of the transformation industry linked to the food processing sectors lost relative importance in the Parana economy, as much for the linkages with to the other sectors, as for the generation of production value and added value. This loss was more stressed in the more traditional food processing sectors, as Coffee Industry and Vegetal Products, instead of in most modern, as Meat Products, Dairy Products, Sugar Products and Vegetal Oil. Moreover, the production and the income had...

Greenhouse Gases Emissions and Economic Performance of Livestock, an Environmental Input-Output Analysis Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Ribeiro,Luiz Carlos de Santana; Leão,Eder Johnson de Area; Freitas,Lúcio Flávio da Silva.
Abstract: In the last three decades, the developing countries have sharply increased its contribution to global warming. From 2005 to 2012, Brazil has reduced its total emissions in 12% due to deforestation control. In the same period, the total GHG emissions excluding land-use change and forestry have increased 18% (WRI, 2014), while per capita GPD has raised 17%. The Brazilian climate policy must go beyond the deforestation control to avoid an unsustainable pattern of development. Since the mitigation effort bears heavily on primary activities, one must ask: how important are those sectors for Brazilian economy? And how their emissions are connected to other sectors along the productive chain? Specifically, this paper aims to calculate the GHG emissions...
