Life-history of the guava weevil, Conotrachelus psidii Marshall (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), under laboratory conditions Neotropical Entomology
Bailez,Omar E.; Viana-Bailez,Ana M.; Lima,José O.G. de; Moreira,Denise D.O..
The guava weevil, Conotrachelus psidii Marshall, is a severe pest of guava fruits in Brazil. The mated females lay eggs in small unripe fruits. As the fruits develop, so do the larvae. Mature larvae abandon the ripe fruits and pupate underground. Larval feeding causes extensive damage to the fruit. We conducted this study to understand the weevil biology under laboratory conditions. Weevil-infested ripe guava were collected in orchards and placed inside cages with moist sand. After emergence, the adults were individually placed in acrylic boxes with food and water. Recently emerged adults were also placed inside plastic boxes for mating, after which the females were isolated. The eggs were placed on moist filter paper in petri dishes containing slices of...

Morphological study of the thorax of the five nymphal instars of Triatoma arthurneivai Lent & Martins (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Rosa,João Aristeu da; Medeiros,Marcello Pereira; Cilense,Mario; Barata,José Maria Soares.
Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was done in order to study dorsal, ventral and lateral sides of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th nymphal instars of Triatoma arthurneivai. The five nymphal instar can be recognized based on different pronotum, mesonotum and metanotum shapes and characteristics. In the 1st instar collar, hairless areas and tubercles are absent. The 2 nd instar presents collar, hairless areas and tubercles. In the 3rd instar occurs the development of wing pads. In the 4 th instar the four wing pads are expanded, but do not reach the abdomen and in the 5th instar the anterior wing pads almost overlap the posterior ones. At the ventral side, two metasternal glands openings (1+1) were found in all five nymphal instars. Brindley's gland evaporation...

Morphometry of eggs and immatures of Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar (Diptera, Culicidae) obtained in the laboratory and on the field Zoologia
Zequi,João A. C.; Lopes,José.
The objectives of this morphometric study of Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar, 1928 larvae were to observe the continuous growth of siphon and cephalic capsule length and width in each instar, and to propose a linear equation to differentiate instars according to the size of both structures. Larvae obtained in laboratory at 27 ± 1ºC, photoperiod 14L:12D were studied. Larvae of the forth instar were collected on the field and compared with same instar larvae reared in the laboratory. Egg size and pigmentation pattern, first instar continuous growth, and differentiation of larval stages measurements were studied. Egg pigmentation patterns and the shapes of raft eggs differentiated specimens of C. saltanensis from Culex (Culex) quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 found...
