This study analysed the prevalence of parasitic and fungal infections in rodents in an area of urban expansion, Aracaju, Brazil. Traps were placed in the area from December 2011 to January 2013. Blood samples, faeces and hair were collected from the animals. We collected a total of 47 rodents; 44 were Rattus rattus, and 3 were Mus musculus. Parasitological evaluation revealed the cestode Hymenolepis diminuta infection in both rodent species. The nematodes Aspiculuris tetraptera and Syphacia obvelata were found in M. musculus, and the commensal Entamoeba coli was found in R. rattus. We observed that 69.2% of the R. rattus and 33.3% of the M. musculus were infected with the haemoparasite Babesia sp. The differential leukocyte count revealed normal (72.3%),...

Enteroparasitosis prevalence and parasitism influence in clinical outcomes of tuberculosis patients with or without HIV co-infection in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro (2000-2006) BJID
Neto,Luanda M.S.; Oliveira,Raquel de Vasconcellos Carvalhaes de; Totino,Paulo Renato; Sant'Anna,Flavia Marinho; Coelho,Viviane de Oliveira; Rolla,Valeria Cavalcanti; Zanini,Graziela M..
Tuberculosis and intestinal parasites affect primarily low social and economic level populations, living clustered in precarious habitational settings. One of the interesting aspects of this interaction is the parasitism influence in cellular response to tuberculosis. In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of enteroparasitosis in tuberculosis patients, HIV-infected and non HIV infected, and we observed the influence of helminth presence in the response to tuberculin skin test (TST) and tuberculosis clinical outcomes. From 607 clinical records reviewed, 327 individuals met the study inclusion criteria and did not present any exclusion criteria. The prevalence of enteroparasites observed was 19.6%. There was no significant association among TST...

Intestinal parasitic infections in renal transplant recipients BJID
Azami,Mehdi; Sharifi,Mehran; Hejazi,Sayed Hossein; Tazhibi,Mehdi.
The impact of intestinal parasitic infection in renal transplant recipients requires careful consideration in the developing world. However, there have been very few studies addressing this issue in Iran. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in renal transplant recipients in Iran. Stool specimens from renal transplant recipients and control groups were obtained between June 2006 and January 2007. The samples screened for intestinal parasitic infections using direct smear, formalin-ether sedimentation, Sheather's flotation and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining methods. Out of 150 renal transplant recipients, 33.3% (50), and out of 225 control group, 20% (45) were infected with one or more type of intestinal...

Intestinal parasites identified in caged Orangutans (Pongo spp.) at the Avilon Zoo, Montalban Zoological Park, Rizal, Philippines OAK
Velasco Ng, J; Claveria, F. G.
Fecal samples collected from 8 groups of caged orangutans (Pongo spp.) kept at Avilon Zoo in Montalban, Rizal were examined using formalin ether concentration and Danish bilharziasis sieving techniques. Hookworm and Ascaris sp. eggs, and numerous mature cysts of Entamoeba coli were identified in orangutans housed in two separate cages and in single female kept in another cage, respectively.
