Hydroponic lettuce production in different concentrations and flow rates of nutrient solution Horticultura Brasileira
Genuncio,Gláucio da C; Gomes,Marcelle; Ferrari,Anderson Claiton; Majerowicz,Nidia; Zonta,Everaldo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the accumulation of fresh weight of hydroponic lettuce in terms of ionic concentrations and flow rates of nutrient solution. This work consisted of three experiments in NFT hydroponic system, conducted between July and September 2006. Lettuce cultivars Lucy Brown, Izabela and Veneza were grown in different ionic concentrations of the 100, 75 and 50% and flow rates of 1.50, 1.00 and 0.75 L min-1. Fresh weight gains were observed for Lucy Brown when grown on 100% of the ion concentration and a flow rate of nutrient solution of 1.0 L min-1. Greater fresh mass was observed for cvs. Izabela and Veneza under the flow rate of 1.5 L min-1. A general analysis of the data allows us to conclude that the application of...

The hatching of cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae) in response to different inorganic ions Scientia Agricola
Li,Tian Jiao; Wang,Dong Ya; Li,Bing Xue; Wu,Hai Yan.
ABSTRACT Cereal cyst nematode is a major pest of small grain cereals, which causes huge yield losses to crops in China and other parts of the world. In this study, the effects of five inorganic ion concentrations on egg hatching of Heterodera avenae were studied. Results revealed that ZnCl2 and FeCl3 promoted hatching of induced and natural diapausing eggs. The cumulative hatching rates of eggs were 49 % and 13 % at 30 mM ZnCl2 and 10 mM FeCl3, respectively, which were higher than those of other treatments. The hatching ability promoted by ZnCl2 is greater than by FeCl3. Diapause induced eggs in ZnCl2 continued to hatch after 10 days; however, those in FeCl3 mainly hatched in the first two weeks. ZnCl2 had obvious stimulating effects on the hatching of...

Morpho-physiological responses of cowpea leaves to salt stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Lacerda,Claudivan F.; Assis Júnior,José O.; Lemos Filho,Luiz C. A.; Oliveira,Teógenes S. de; Guimarães,Francisco V.A.; Gomes-Filho,Enéas; Prisco,José T.; Bezerra,Marlos A..
The effect of salt stress of known intensity and duration on morpho-physiological changes in leaves of different ages from cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] plants was studied, aiming for a better understanding of the acclimation process of the whole-plant. Seeds were sown in vermiculite and seedlings were transferred to plastic trays containing aerated nutrient solution, and kept in a greenhouse. When the first trifoliate leaf emerged the seedlings were transplanted into 3 L plastic pots containing aerated nutrient solution. Salt additions started 5 d later, and the salt-treated plants received 25 mmol L-1 per day until reaching a final concentration of 75 mmol L-1. During the experimental period primary leaves and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trifoliate...

Stimulation of antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation by abiotic stresses in leaves of Momordica charantia Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Agarwal,Sheela; Shaheen,Robina.
The purpose of the present work was to evaluate both the antioxidant response system and oxidative stress in leaves from bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L) subjected to NaCl, UV-B and water stresses at three different stages of plant growth: pre-flowering, flowering and post-flowering. Except for peroxidase (POX), all enzyme activities including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), glutathione reductase (GR), as well as concentrations of ascorbate (ASA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) exhibited maximum values at the flowering stage under all three stresses. All the enzyme activities, SOD, CAT, POX, PPO, GR and the concentrations of ASA, H2O2 and TBARS were elevated under NaCl...

Salinity effects on leaf ion composition and salt secretion rate in Avicennia germinans (L.) L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Suárez,Nathalie; Medina,Ernesto.
The effect of salinity on leaf water relations, and rate and ionic composition of leaf secretion was investigated in plants of Avicennia germinans growing under controlled salinity conditions. Increases in salinity from 0 to 940 mol NaCl m-3 reduced the predawn water potential from -0.56 to -4.16 MPa and the solute potential from -2.27 to -4.48 MPa, whereas the pressure potential remained positive in all treatments. Compared to the control, at 940 mol NaCl m-3 Na+ and Cl- concentrations of leaf sap increased 19 and 7 times, respectively. With the addition of salt the main ions accumulated in leaves were Na+ and Cl- whereas plants grown without salt accumulated K+ in leaves at levels similar to those of Na+ with salt treatments. Secretion rates of Na+ and...
